That’s been done in the past(crushing urchins) . Palos Verdes underwater project. What was found out it increases the urchin population. When crushed the urchins are able to reproduce (releasing sperm and eggs) thus increasing the population.
It was my understanding that reproduction from crushing them was only viable during their "spawning" season. You can go to the ocean and see the "milky white" waters full of urchin sperm.
meanwhile, I watched a video two days ago about the horrible decline in sea urchin populations in some other areas because of disease and how terrible that was. Has anyone set up a tank to spawn some starfish?
Because there killing its prediter faster then it can keep them in check so the purple ones are growing out of control. Also the fact they kill but don't eat them even though they have smell eggs/balls just eat them there edible.
I will be asking biologist this week if smashing masses of them may release eggs and sperm of urchins to fertilize, which could increase the population explosion. I agree they need to be removed. But maybe we need to remove them without smashing them. Please hold off on smashing purple sea urchins until we know the best way to do it. Avoiding another serious unexpected consequence from the best of intentions is important. Yes. We will need help, but let's ensure that it will be a truly effective approach.
They're edible, but not commercially attractive. Plus they ate all the kelp and are starving so there's effectively nothing in them for humans to eat. They can survive a long time without food.
Purples don't produce the same amounts of uni (urchin roe), but yes; you can eat the "meat" (orange eggs) inside. Not sure of your supposed to check the biotoxin line, like with shellfish.
Then eat them even if they dont produce the same amount as the red ones just eat them theres hundreds of thousands more of these purple ones then the red ones.
They can still eat them they just don't have alot of meat in them like the red ones do so it makes no sense why they don't actually get the purple ones
If you were listening purple urchins don't supply much meat. The Red ones that are going extinct, are the ones that produce a larger amount. People don't want the purple ones.
Gotta start introducing otters to get rid of them

Can u provide a link for that?

Literally the comment I was looking for... Hope they see this, but I guess theyll find out!
Return sea otters to the north coast all the way to OR north
That's what I was wondering about. Sea otters are voracious, and urchins are they're favorite food.
The Red Abalone was poached into endangerment. Sport seasons will never come back.
My grandmother grew up there. Rugged, beautiful territory.
Collect them & process for food. Add washed shells & spines to concrete.
Oh so now the harvest limit is 40 gallons instead of 35 individual urchins?
Only for you're diving or snorkeling. If you're foraging (from shore) then it's 35 individuals. Late reply but hey, if it helps ...

If you can't beat them, eat them (Japanese sashimi chefs)
She starred in Crocodile Dundee
"though native they've been declared an invasive species"
Nothing means anything anymore
The news is usually B.S. but this is pretty explanatory. No more natural predators equals unchecked growth.
:( too late to save the starfish... i hope this gets under control because we need the kelp forests
Triggered
@@imberrysandy The kelp forests will just catch fire and burn if the urchins don't clean them out.
Why aren't they reintroducing the starfish? Or perhaps it is still too warm there?

I love sea urchins🪸
How can a native species be labeled an “invasive” species
Because there killing its prediter faster then it can keep them in check so the purple ones are growing out of control.
Also the fact they kill but don't eat them even though they have smell eggs/balls just eat them there edible.
Though native to these waters, they are now considered an invasive species.
???
The creatures that preyed on the purple urchins are gone, now the population is out of control, so invasive.
Uni?

Do the seafood soups
i see.
Are these the edible kind?
no :( they dont have any meat when you open them
Yes these are edible these are very expensive at japanese restaurants

Eat 'em. They are tasty
yes i want it.
well..................
i harvest uchins NW canada. 27 kills is rookie numbers. looks like fun though. oh, and this will never work IMHO.
Then eat them even if they dont produce the same amount as the red ones just eat them theres hundreds of thousands more of these purple ones then the red ones.
kina is delicious harvest em
They can still eat them they just don't have alot of meat in them like the red ones do so it makes no sense why they don't actually get the purple ones
Beam the tribbles over to the Klingon ship Captain McCue.
There's something killing them in Florida..Bring it there.
Wow no good😭leftiys
Too many sea urchins are bad, normal amount good, pretty simple. Say goodbye to Seakelp and Otters!
Solution = Human consumption
to much work, which will make it an expensive dish. And who is going to pay for all that?
Not enough to eat on starved purple urchins, thus not viable for commercial purposes.
Humans don't taste that good. Urchin consumption is probably a better solution in the short run.
Didn't you guys do a news bit a few months ago about sea urchins going scarce because of demand? What happened?
If you were listening purple urchins don't supply much meat. The Red ones that are going extinct, are the ones that produce a larger amount. People don't want the purple ones.
Different species of urchin. That would be the red urchin, and the purple ones outcompete the reds.
Life is funny,, maybe ship them to Florida? Ha ha just kidding.
Could the urchin eggs be harvested and frozen to be used as good for the saltwater aquarium hobby?

Solution: Chopsticks. Let the Asians feast. They'll eat anything from the ocean and I mean _anything_ .
We Chinese can make anything taste good. Even cardboard. Just deep fry and add MSG.
True.
