I hope you enjoyed the video and the review, please take into account all if the clips I showed of the projector playing are not exactly as I saw them in the flesh of course, its just to give some examples and the reason I am wobbling the projector sometomes is just to demonstrate it was the XGIMI making the image your seeing :)

Thanks for the video. Sadly this projector at full brightness has terrible contrast of 240:1 and that really kills the deal. I hear that they have a firmware update coming in 3days ( Sep 23rd) to raise it to about 300:1 but that that is still not good. I compared it to my Hisense and Optoma and was a bit disappointed hence had to return it.

@@CanadaSocial How large is your screen to need to run this PJ at full brightness - It auto sets to 8 on the iris with a 4 metre screen and then its easy to tweak the settings to create a more contrast look. Then it holds its own with a 15k Sony and is better than my previous twice the size and more expensive BenQ. Thats before you even get to dolby vision.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem I have a 120 and 150 inch mate. I found the blacks looking like greys. It just felt dull when compared to my other projectors. Did you notice that the blacks were more like greys? I don’t think the Dolby vision settings helped much, I really wanted to like this one but was disappointed because of the contrast ratio leading to a dull picture quality in comparison. If I didn’t have the other projectors I would not have realized it. My wife actually caught it first and that says something LOL

@@CanadaSocial Fair enough, on a 150 inch your unlikely to have needed full brightness but every room and screen is different that matters. I found the black level to be raised slightly because the brightness tracking was off a little, which required changing the gamma setting, slightly lowering the brightness by about 2/3 and colour up by 2/3 - then a slight tweak in the white balance and bang great image. Dolby Vision slightly different tweaks

I have just been sent a link to a video where XGIMI show some performance numbers from the Horizon Ultra and its between 350 and 950:1 contrast depending on where the Iris is set. Max is not ideal - as I mentioned before 8 or below then a tweak to the brightness setting in the picture menu your good.. Although with very high contrast content like Dolby Vision 4K UHD Disc, Not streaming full brightness could still look great.

We have been using the XGIMI Horizon now for 2 weeks! It has changed my life! As a great lover of cinema, at age of 67 ... its changed my life! For me to be able to project 4K, Blu-ray and ever "lowly" DVD and TV is wonderful! Already a fan!

As this potentially opens up the home theatre market to a larger audience, would a mini series on the ultra be a good idea, its something i would find useful. From mounting options for small rooms (shelf or ceiling behind a couch), how to blackout a room (if required), even simple stuff like having a rug to absorb sound over hard floors, upgrades like a full surround sound system and where to mount it, hiding wires, a projector screen. Getting into home theatre is alot of learning

I got a middling 1080p one for the garage and it's great - has none of the projector issues with an ALR screen and soundbar built in essentially!

Thank you so much for this review! :-) Seems like a really solid product! Was wondering, what's it called when a projector can actually match those movies shot in full cinema-scope? You know, so there's no black bars to be seen on the top and bottom? Basically it just goes from it's standard 16:9 image and expands out on both sides?

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem

Interesting you mention about sound coming from the projector, with that amazing set up, the sound would come from the screen. I have never known a projector without a 3.5 jack for connection to an external amp. I loved your video, but not the product. If you mean dynamic metadata hdr yes that is what it is but it’s also a little more than that as it’s integration is so wide spread so it’s more of an end to end solution dynamic hdr solution rather than an after adapted one like you see with Sony and jvc projectors as an example

One complaint I have with Xgimi projectors is lack of backlit remotes. There is no excuse for this in 2023. None….
My 1080P projector from like 2008 has one. Also, the other problem I found out only AFTER I bought my Xgimi projector, was that you cannot project content on Roku in 4K, because the projector is not certified with the correct 4K copy protection, in order to watch in 4K. Which really kills the point of having a 4K projector in the first place. Yes, I have my high end 4K Blu Ray player and Dolby Atmos receiver system. However, much, if not most of our content we consume today, is done by streaming. Even for physical media enthusiasts like me with 1000’s of physical discs…
Those two things really bummed me out after buying my projector. I was super disappointed and have thought about selling my Xgimi 4K that has literally less than 10 hours on it since last Christmas… 🤷‍♂️☹️

@@PursuitPerfectSystemnot sure it applies to Apple. Or out of the states. Depends a lot on licensing. But here is what I got as answers directly from Xgimi and from Roku. Because the projectors they release don’t contain the HDCP 2.2 HDMI protocol, you cannot stream any 4K content through Roku with this projector.
I tried to find workarounds, every single way possible. What happens, is my 4K Roku starts out in 4K 60. Then it automatically kicks the content down to 1080P 60 as soon as it starts to play. And this is because the copy protection can’t “shake hands” with the projector, because it isn’t 2.2 HDMI compliant. Is all of this overly protective stuff dumb? I think so…
But that doesn’t change the fact we can’t play any 4K content legally on this projector that is streaming… This may be why Xgimi has their own platform on the projector for apps. But to be honest, I don’t like their platform. And it certainly has nowhere near the apps available on Roku. Or at least not easily. Plus, it projects apps like VUDU in SD. And by doing the apps natively in the projector, there isn’t a convenient or easy way to bring out the sound and have your Dolby Atmos. This issue is a major shortcoming in their 4K projectors. 🤷‍♂️
Here is the link, to Roku on the subject.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem cheaper? Certainly it is cheaper. But not sure that would solve the issue. The real issue, is that the projector is not HDCP compliant with HDMI 2.2. Other streaming solutions are likely to have the same issue. Either now or if they upgrade their copy protection protocol.
Again, I don’t know if this is an issue out of the states. So other regions may not be dealing with this. But here, it cripples the amount of content you can watch in 4K. Basically, only 4K discs with Xgimi…
Xgimi is well aware of the issue. From emails from me and me getting responses. As well as another cinephile like me, who emailed them after seeing my posts about this issue, elsewhere. I suspect they don’t want to pay the licensing fees to become 2.2 HDMI compliant.

I assume I would have had the same issue but I didn't get it on the Ultra so either they have changed that or its not an issue with an appletv for some reason I dont know. The black levels are not as good as much more expensive projectors such as the sony I compared to but I wouldn't say the image is washed out. But part of the setting up is finding the right picture balance to have as much contrast as possible as this much light output will lighten the image and reduce the perceived contrast. I found a little settings tinkering helped content depending, and I am sure a pro calibrator could do a better job hence my comment.
What you are referring to I have seen from loads of projectors its always the same setup fight light and brightness impact vs contrast and the screen and light reflectivity in the room play a massive part of that too.

With the right paint (black diffuser) on the wall you get midday projection on a 4-meter wall. Power consumption is an issue for me if i needed to buy one of these. To use it as a daily driver it should not require more than 150 Watts and should have an ECO mode for smaller projection sizes.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem According to The Hook Up (link below) the XGIMI can at max reach 2126 ANSI Lumens, but only when it "sounds like a jet engine" and is "heavily green shifted". At a more tolerable bright setting it sinks to 1560 Lumens, which isn't great. Meanwhile the X5 can reach 2270 Lumens comfortably. In cinema mode it's even 965 Lumens (XGIMI) vs. 1500 Lumens (X5). And then there's the contrast. For the X5 he measured 902:1, for the XGIMI 434:1 or 704:1 if the reduce the brightness is reduced. Yes, Dolby Vision has a slight advantage over HDR10, but the question is if it's really worth the couple hundred dollars more, especially considering the downside of brightness and contrast. Also keep in mind that Dolby Vision doesn't lower the not so great black levels of the XGIMI. The Hook Up demonstrated that well in his video. He also shows that the Hisense C1, which is only a bit more expensive, beats the XGIMI in almost every category. So yes, there is strong competition for the XGIMI.

Dolby Vison is end to end tone mapping HDR10 has no tone mapping so bright scenes get washed out or bright areas of the screen get washed out, Dolby Vision helps to reduce that effect and its the defacto standard for all new content so yeah its worth it
