Rewatching this series for probably the 4th or 5th time! Every time life gets a little wonky I always come back to these videos to remind myself that I will achieve my dream of thru hiking the AT one day. Thank you Early Riser 71 for being an inspiration and for being what sparked my dream of thru hiking the AT!
Starting this again. Probably my third time watching the series. Probably the ultimate thru hiking video series. Love it! Learn so much from you. Hope you and the family are safe and well. Happy hiking!!
Good morning ER71 from Erwin, TN. It's been over 2 years since I first watched this and your AT adventure began. Always enjoyed the sunrises in your videos as well as the comments. Wish you were still posting videos.
Excited to see your start. You are the first of the several 2017 thru hikers I am following to actually get on the trail. I hope to do my own in a couple years. I am right off the trail at Mile 1383 in Virginia. Plan on providing some trail magic this spring and summer so maybe I will see you out there in a couple months. Be safe.
great start. can't wait for my turn. quick tip on water collection though.point the bottle downstream and you won't have to worry as much about debris making its way in. good luck and thanks for sharing your hike
I always go back to watch the first few videos after the end of the thru hike. Helps me put it all into context. Sick a great first couple of days!! Yours may be the first I've watched in real time from beginning to end as they were posted. WOTP!
Awesome! So excited to see your first trail video! Looking forward to all the others. So far, perfect! I like it when folks say the date, day #, and location. Helps me keep up on the map! You are doing great. Best of luck. I know it has got to be one of the most exciting feelings in the world!
Hey Brother... I'm a retired Infantryman and Ranger heading out on the 16th March. Ref your rationale for avoiding shelters, I'm with you there. Personally, it would be hard for me to jam into one of those noisy cubicles. I'm hyper sensitive as it is. So my tent will be my palace of peace. But like you, definitely looking forward to meeting folks along the way. Thanks for your service and best of wishes... Flex
Really enjoyed your video. Crazy pace, at least from and ole mans perspective. Good point on Aqua Mira especially in freezing weather. Water was a problem on my 100 mile section hike last June. I like your points regarding a recovery plan. I look forward to your next post. Happy Trails
I've caught on to you a little late but you are a man after my own heart. You see beauty in just about everything. Sunrises, sunsets, brooks, forest....everything.
Congrats on starting! I have 8 more days till its my turn. I'm already dreading leaving the family but at the same time really excited! Keep up the good work!
Your pants are so clean! haha I feel the exact same about shelters and camping away from everyone. Sociable during the day, but just don't want to hear the snoring. Glad to see you're on the way, gotta catch up on you vids quick!
Ok ER, I'm starting again from the beginning. Love these GA/NC/TN videos; cold, crisp but lots of excitement with your adventure. Not pushing off until Feb/March of 2020. The 2018 class has been great.
I'm really loving your channel man. I retire in 2018 (Army) and am in the process of planning my own AT hike. Your channel really spoke to me after listening to your gear review.... once I heard words like "rucking" and "issued" I knew you were military. Looking forward to following your journey and hearing your lessons learned.
Hi all. I'm from Australia and I'm planning on through hiking the AT in 2019. Thank you so much Early Riser for these videos. These will be a huge help. Best of luck.
Very cool video! I live in Jasper and did your hike SOBO four days ago. I met the trail angel who put out the water. He gave me some Gatorade and a tootsie roll. You are busting it!
Congratulations on such a fine start. Thank you for all of your advice about taking care of the body on trail. Looking forward to following you all the way from up in Canada eh! 😉 Lamplighter out! (A.T.2019)
Holy Smokes! You're smoking! Great job and good point on taking care of the body after a tough work out, as the recovery/repairs happens at night when you sleep as we all know! I'll be doing my next section hiKr end of April beginning of May can't wait! Glory 2 God! Hope A Walker🚶🏽♀️
Let the education begin (my own). I can’t believe I’ve come here to discover we both have the same start date (Feb 16th). Man, you’re hauling arse right out of the gate✌️
Glad you found us. I too used a previous vlogger that started in Feb as well. His channel is Gator Miller. Entertaining but also shows you the early season conditions of the trail in a different year.
Thanks for the response. I’ll definitely check out Gator’s channel. After watching another episode, I ordered my first pair of compression socks. I’m 52 (not ancient), and I’m trying to utilize every tool possible to get me to Katahdin.
That looks like Cooper Gap where you found the gallon jugs of water. I camped there last year after getting caught in a huge downpour on top of Sassafras mountain. There was water there that day too. I believe the famous Ron of Ron's Shuttles drops water there pretty regularly.
Just found your channel also I am going to get your book!! Any advice for me!! Starting my journey February 14th with my dog and support from hubby Mark. He will meet us every 3 to 4 days for resupply. Been training and doing lots of gear shakeouts but any helpful advice would be appreciated! Take good care!
Good call eating that heavy apple. I got you a trail name ... how about Big Apple. Recovery plan is on point ... love that. No approach trail? Are you also planning to be air-lifted off Katahdin? j/k Looks like a great first day. I'd love to see a tent setup time-lapse ... I bag explosion in the tent .... food bag tour ... well lit portrait of everyone you pass on the trail ... Remember ... start slow, taper off.
Hey ER71 I'm 559 (Subscriber that is). Have a great hike and I hope to come along with you from here. Thanks for filming your journey. When you get to some of those butt kicking hills, take a video to share so we can see the degree of difficulty. Thanks, 559
Thanks for the vids brother... Im curious, are you finding the YakTraks necessary for your shoes yet? I start in 11 days and am debating them. Thanks, Stay safe!
Hey man looking to start in feb 2018 was wondering what struggles you faced starting so early in the yr there is much info online thanks man and congrats!
Only two issues worth worrying about. The cold is the obvious. It creates the need to carry more weight and ultra light folks risk being caught in the cold without enough clothing. More aggravating is the second issue, the fact that many hiker services are not open when you get to towns. There is enough open to make it, but definitely agravating none the less.
Early_Riser_71 thanks what extra gear did you carry for the cold weather and also did you find that you spent more money in the colder months because things were less accessible
alright man!! really looking forward to following your thru hike!! i did have a question....what do you do for work to get all that free stuff?? i didn't ever pick it up in the videos....cept that i know you work with a bunch of athletic trainers or somethin......anyway....good luck!
If you have a chance watch Kiwi wandering USA channel on UA-cam. He's a little bit in front of you, shows all stealth camping spots not listed on guide. Good luck man keep trucking!!
Rewatching this series for probably the 4th or 5th time! I do the same! Newborn baby added to the mix and need a reminder to keep pushing!
Starting this again. Probably my third time watching the series. Probably the ultimate thru hiking video series. Love it! Learn so much from you. Hope you and the family are safe and well. Happy hiking!!
Dad was thrilled you bragged on his gravy and biscuits... you ain't lyin!!! Journey on, lil' brother. Enjoy every single minute of it. Life is good!
I know I am kind of off topic but does anybody know of a good site to watch new series online ?
@Kingston Dangelo Try FlixZone. You can find it on google :)
@Leandro Griffin yup, I've been using FlixZone for since march myself =)
@Leandro Griffin Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I really appreciate it!!
@Kingston Dangelo you are welcome xD
Watching your series again to take my mind off this craziness.
I heard nothing after "biscuits and gravy" :) Glad to see you're finally on the trail.
Was sent here to your page to help prepare for my future hike!!! So far I am really enjoying your thoughts and views!!!

Holy crap, big miles, heavy pack...
Something I learned from last year, use your headphone mic when you record to keep a better volume level.
Hey ER71 I'm 559 (Subscriber that is). Have a great hike and I hope to come along with you from here. Thanks for filming your journey. When you get to some of those butt kicking hills, take a video to share so we can see the degree of difficulty.

The A.T. restored my faith in humanity.
Good luck
Awesome videos. What are you using to determine the temps? Multi-function watch? Keep us posted on what gear is not working as planned?
You made it! You started later that previous stated in another video??
Good Luck Mate
What camera are you using?
Do you have to deal with many Ticks? Being from Texas we see Ticks all year. So just curious.
Is your AT thru hike playlist backwards? Maybe I need more sleep?
what number were you in the sign in book on Springer?
What connector did you get for your Swayer squeeze?
Watch out for Bigfoot.
Thanks for the vids brother... Im curious, are you finding the YakTraks necessary for your shoes yet? I start in 11 days and am debating them.
Thanks, Stay safe!
What was your Branch and MOS?
You're the third thru hiker I'm following this year. The other two started around Feb. 1st. I wish all of you the best. Love the vlogs.
