I am a rank novice player and have jumped in with both feet to teaching myself this through your lesson. It's slow but steady; can't wait for the other parts!
Thank for your video! I absolutely love this song and you play it amazingly. One question concerning your right hand: For the chords that land on offbeats, do you use an upstroke ? In general, when do you use upstrokes on chords that land on offbeats...? This has always been a nagging problem for me-- I always use downstrokes but feel I should be using upstroke. Thank you Thank you!
I tend to favor downstrokes as much as I can. Downstrokes tend to be louder and more controlled. If you look at my right hand in the first example you will see I am mostly using downstrokes. I use upstrokes when necessary (e.g. consecutive 8th notes). That being said, in the end I just use what I think sounds best rather than following strict rule. I purposely try to avoid "historical dogma" when playing, meaning, I come at these pieces with a modern sense of playing but with the knowledge of "how" and "why" it was played a certain way or a technique was used. I'll change chord forms and notes as I please.
Great lesson, thank you so very much for breaking it all down for all of us who follow you

Great lesson man. Do you have the rest of the song up for lesson or any other carl kress??
Sorry, I don't. Perhaps I should. Also, no, you do not need a 7-string for this song but that extra string can really be useful sometimes can't it?
Jonny, where'd u get the tab?Chris, great vid thanks!
wiseheartstory the tab can be found in Mel Bay's Masters of the Plectrum Guitar. A great book. My favorite.
Is it true that Carl Kress tuned his guitar in perfect 5ths ?
