    Thanks Greg! As you know, I'm one of the newest members of the boosted miata club. I just finished putting the car completely back together and noticed that on the test drive, at the higher RPM's the car would lean out. I took a video of it and also noticed that my boost pressure would also increase while reviewing the footage. While installing my turbo kit, I'd also installed a test pipe- but I'm thinking the cat is going to have to go back on for right now to help elevate this issue.
    As usual- you had the explanation for what I was experiencing! Years ago when I was N/A, I probably skipped over this video- but now that I'm boosted, I'm back to learn. Full circle

    eventho I know this already I still gotta watch cuz you do in such a clear a concise manner!...what type of plugs you run?..

      +Audiwan Kenobi I run NGK BKR7E which is 2 steps colder than stock on my engine too. I started with BKR6E but I was having hesitation/misfire issues until I went to 7's. You run 18psi on that K04 that you were talking about? I'm not sure what turbo that one is comparable to, I'm mostly familiar with Garrett's line and a little bit with the Mitsubishi turbos. K03/4 are used on Audis and VW's right?

    I have a 2011 335xi n55, and I’m getting what seems to be an overrev on wide open throttle acceleration between 2700 and 3500 rpms. It will spike about a 1000 rpms immediately and then settle back and then proceed to rise the rev range normally.
    At first I thought a blocked vacuum line, then maybe boost solenoid, then perhaps coil packs, or injectors, and now I’m wondering if it’s a faulty diverter valve. My shop said they couldn’t replicate the issue, but it’s getting worse. They said they thought my clutch was slipping.
    Any ideas on what could be causing this issue?
    Any help would be awesome, thanks!

    I love watching this channel. Today I found out I have a coolant leak near the front water pump, or inlet pipe, and an oil leak near the crankshaft. How long does it take to change all the cam/crank seals, water pump + seals, and to time the car? I saw your video about it but don't recall you saying how long it took.
    This is my only car so that's why I ask.

    So does boost creep cause the 30FE (charge air pressure too high) and 3100 (boost pressure control deactivated) in N54's? I went catless on my downpipes and added a 2.5" catback and anything over 3-4k rmp it goes limp. And at idle or at a stop white smoke comes from the exhaust, I have dual exhaust and I noticed the right side usually makes the most smoke but the exhaust existing is cooler than the right🤔

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel Рік тому

      Free flowing exhaust can cause raised boost pressure but I haven't heard of this on the N54, since catless/modded exhausts are so popular on those. Check the lines that run to the wastegates, and also check for the infamous "wastegate rattle". My brother had big-time boost problems and boost related codes due to the wastegate flappers getting loose over time

    Gregg - You were talking about very free flowing exhausts. I am setting up to run that same GT2554R as you are and was going to have Abe make me a 3" DP, do you think thats over kill for 12ish maybe 14Psi? Would 550cc injectors be over kill for my power goals over around 240whp? I will want to run two tunes one low boost (5-6psi) and one higher boost (12-14psi), so I am really wondering if those 550cc injectors will be too much? I know stock block limit is around 250whp so I want to keep it safe, honestly DD @230whp would be prefect with the option to do low boost when its very rainy

    • @TheCarPassionChannel

      Since I have you on the line, and you know I got that same GT2554r I was wondering where you got all your coolant lines and oil lines from? More specifically when size AN fittings I need for both coolant and oil coming to and leaving the turbo?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel 8 років тому

      Troy Sebo You can either get a complete T25 line kit from eBay, make your own with the right fittings, or buy a complete setup from a company like FM or Begi. My lines all originally came from Begi, and I still have their water line fittings. My feed is no an AN line that I made myself using parts from Summit Racing, and the drain is just the Begi drain and a 5/8" rubber hose, but the ebay T25 oil outlets are perfectly fine too.

    I have a 5psi waste gate actuator.
    the problem is at about 4500 rpm im already at (8-9ish) psi of boost
    also with the waste gate door tied open I don't get any boost until around 4k but still get 4-5 psi at 6k rpm
    would porting the waste gate solve this or is their something else that would cause this problem

      +BigTony42393 I'm surprised that a 2554R is creeping on you because with mine it will barely hit 2psi at redline with the gate open. You have a 1.8 or a 1.6? It will help, but usually the Garretts have properly sized ports. Just be sure not to remove too much material.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel 4 роки тому

      A huge downpipe will make creep worse. Adding a muffler back in will help creep. If by "fuel cutting" you mean that you're leaning the engine out so much that it stops accelerating and is on the verge of melting the pistons, I would seriously consider running an adequate fuel system for your setup.
      My car also made more power at 8psi with the open exhaust than 11psi with the stock exhaust. Psi is a measure of restriction, not airflow.

    What is the benefit of an external wastegate?

  • @ColemanBales
    @ColemanBales 8 років тому

    my garrett 2560r just randomly started having this problem. weird thing is that it didn't use to do it, and just started recently... i did a pressure test and fixed a few boost leaks it had, however they are all fixed now and it's still creeping. only thing I can think of left would be my wastegate actuator. think this could be the problem? Idk what else it could be. If the wastegate actuator doesn't fix it i guess ill just have to take it apart and try porting it. to give perspective, on wastegate pressure my car should be making 8psi, but closer to redline it will make 12 or more.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel 8 років тому

      +Bunny Rabbit Garage I have a GT2554R on my other car and it has zero creep, even though I have a straight 2.5" exhaust. Even when I only run 7psi, it won't creep at all, the Garrett IWG ports are just correctly done. You may have a leaky actuator diaphragm OR the wastegate signal line has a crack or leak. Are you running any sort of boost control or just wastegate pressure?

    • @ColemanBales
      @ColemanBales 8 років тому

      +TheCarPassionChannel typically a boost controller, but for testing purposes I redid the whole vacuum system and left it on wastegate pressure. I pressure tested it and verified no leaks now except the ever so slightly throttle body leak that they all have. It's prob a leaky actuator diaphragm like you said. I'll try replacing that soon

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel 8 років тому

      +Bunny Rabbit Garage Where do you have the signal line for the wastegate plugged in?

    • @ColemanBales
      @ColemanBales 8 років тому

      +TheCarPassionChannel directly from the port on the intake, straight to the actuator. Used to have a bov in line but I changed that when I re did it.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel 8 років тому

      ***** What port on the intake? I'm fairly certain the WG signal should come from the IC piping so it doesn't see any vacuum, but I'm not positive.

  • @johnsmith3032

    If you really want to make large amounts of power from your turbo, your best bet is to weld the waste gate shut.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel 8 років тому +7

      +John Smith Nice troll, IWG porting doesn't have anything to do with power gains though, it has to do with avoiding boost creep. FYI there are actually cars that run with no wastegate at all/wastegate welded shut.

    • @skylinwalker8123
      @skylinwalker8123 8 років тому

      +TheCarPassionChannel I know this is going to be a silly question. But I just bought a '95 1.8L, and I am completely new to boosting. I've done a little research but I'm still a little foggy on how to set LOW boost on the turbo set up. Please, don't laugh. I'm a huge car guy and I thought building a budget boosted Miata would be a fun little daily that I could enjoy. I'm not going for 7+ PSI, and I don't need a crazy amount of horsepower, just something that's fun to drive. So, my questions are....1.) How the hell do you set your turbo rig up to run around 5-6 PSI? I know I need an FMU, I don't want to run an aftermarket ECU (I'm broke yo, keyword: BUDGET), I know what parts I need and how the basic concept of a turbo works. I would be running a manual boost controller. 2.) Can you run external BOV's on turbo's that have internal waste gates? 3.) With a manual boost controller, and external BOV, how do you set the PSI where you want it?
      Thanks for any input, don't want to blow the car to hell, just want it to be simple, and fun. Stock gaskets, stock ECU, may do a clutch upgrade for the hell of it just to be safe, and I want to run completely straight piped with a muffler at the end of the exhaust system.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel 8 років тому +5

      Skylin Walker Sup man! No such thing as a stupid question. First of all, you should know that the BOV has nothing to do with controlling boost, that's the job of the wastegate. If you strap a turbo on a car with no boost control, it will run at "wastegate pressure." So if the turbo has a 7psi spring in the wastegate, it will operate at 7psi. You can use a manual or electronic boost controller to raise the boost, but not lower it. In order to lower it, you need a wastegate actuator with a softer spring. I have a 4psi wastegate on my budget boost car, and I can always raise it from there. If you're running under 7psi, I wouldn't bother replacing the clutch unless it starts slipping. At 4-5psi the car will probably only make 120-130whp which the stock 1.8 clutch will easily handle, might as well save that money for later. In fact at that low boost level, a lot of people don't even run any blow off valve.

    • @skylinwalker8123
      @skylinwalker8123 8 років тому +2

      Awesome! Thanks for that info man! I never usually get replies from anyone somewhat famous on UA-cam lol. So on your budget boost, you're not running a boost control? Like I said, just trying to make something fun to drive, and I love the sound of a BOV. One more and final question, let say I do buy a T25 from eBay, does the wasteate that comes on it have a way to adjust or change the spring? Or is it typically set at a certain PSI? Thanks, keep up the awesome videos man!

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel 8 років тому +2

      Skylin Walker I do my best to answer everyone's questions, although it does take up a lot of time! As of right now I have no boost control, just the 4psi wastegate actuator. 99% of T25 (Garrett and Chinese versions) will come with an internal wastegate actuator that's not servicable so you cannot swap the spring, you need to change the whole actuator. They're usually around $50, the one I used is from a Saab. (Bought it on eBay).
