not a poe1 player and was 100% going to choose witch for my class right up to release but quickly changed my mind in the character select screen to monk. liked the playstyle right up to ascendancy were i chose to go chonk because of the concept of a monk turned to the darkside and reading a few nodes like manaleech working as energyshield lifesteal or even the exchanging spirit for darkness and getting a unique resource. After I got the first 2 points I saw a small power spike but kept falling behind and feeling like I was way weaker than everything I was going against. since the ascendancy itself wasn't very popular there were almost no resources for builds or help and the few I saw were people going chaos abilities and playing like a witch without summons. At 70hrs into the character barely finishing act 3 not cruel I was going to just switch to invoker , thankfully I found one of the only guys who uses the class like an actual monk nonamehq and followed his build and was able to have fun again with that character. I currently have 200hrs in the game only using that character doing t5 maping and even though I know i could be way further into the endgame i'm having fun and are optimistic that we will be getting some sort of buffs or rework to some of the nodes that aren't viable like the 2 metioned before :)
I started out with a warrior for several hours, and decided to try Monk a try and I think it's my new main class. The lightning skills are a ton of fun.
The bell has become a big problem in the end game where the gameplay is more fast paced. Also the abilities where you dash like shattering palm have problems. The clutter in some of the maps prevent it from dashing if there is a pillar or a pot etc near the target you are dashing to.
I'm not exactly a POE veteran or theory crafter by any stretch, but I've been seeing builds for monks and several other classes that has me rethinking the Acolyte. If the modifiers, keywords, abilities, and passives work the way I think they do, I suspect you can get some *crazy* chaos damage out of a flicker strike + reaper's invocation Acolyte build that. Lean into physical, crit, and chaos damage passives. I now wonder how stacking mana leech + eldritch battery + MoM + CI with high evasion would work with this or if it would just brick the build or produce an entirely subpar setup. Sure, you're losing some layered defenses with the meme approach but it just could work. Would be stupid cheeky if you could squeak in a CoC with chaos projectile spell + chain + scattershot as you just flicker across the map lol.
I'm was trying to make more physical monk Whirling assault is pretty good in finishing mobs - with charged staff buff and bell can deal big damage especially with staggering palm buff (with ricochet is even better in closed spaces) Wind blast is good as "get off me" tool and for dealing stun/daze (mandatory with area effect support) As far as I saw it is not as good as tempest flurry but can be very fun
On your point about Chaos monks I think they are holding some skills back waiting for the release of the shadow. This will be akin to your own points on why the Warrior feels a bit undercooked now right? We simply don't have everything. I think Shadow and Monk will go hand in hand, especially the acolyte of Chayula, just like the Invoker goes hand in hand with the Elemental Sorcerer. As I was not a PoE1 player, I did expect the monk to be more of a monk from D3, but, well it isn't so have to respect their vision. Still I would love more viable playstyles with wind and maybe fire so I can finally make my monk the Avatar of PoE2
I found it tough in act 1 and maybe first half of act 2 bit since then it's been easy mode. Once your build starts to come together and as you get better gear the pain of the first act really starts to pay off. I'm just winging it as well with my own build.
I had that issue in a2 normal, but once I started checking vendors every level I got so geared I could breeze thru the rest. Monk pops off once you get 40+
Agree with it all. I do wonder if they have any specific builds in mind when they create these ascendency's. Chayula builds work better with spirit and not darkness. Work better with a bow/wand than a quarterstaff.
@@markcole2040 some people seem to. I don't, and I'm excited for the rest of the additions because it's going to open up a lot. He talked about that here and did a whole video on it. As for my ascendency comment. I do wonder if they designed some with non-class weapons in mind. Because quarterstaff chayula isn't great.
Idk, as much as I tend to enjoy the idea of a monk-like class (I'm a HUGE fan of Lost Ark's martial artist classes and D3's monk), I couldn't enjoy this one fully. Some of the skills just didn't have enough punchy impact, and I felt underpowered and made of paper the whole time up to level 45 where I stopped.
My monk has been devouring everything since prob lvl 15 or so. I lost count of how many bosses I took down first try. Including most of act 2 and prob 3/4 of act 3, including the final boss, who I melted. Ice/lightning invoker. Herald ice and lightning. Everything is frozen and spanked and they get a bell dropped on their heads. Health bars vanish. This could be more to do with your build and gear choices. Assuming you know how to gear and chased the best stats you can find, it might be bad luck. But I had no issues gradually gearing into pieces and a weapon that melted.
@phant0mdummy It's most likely a build issue, but I'm stubborn and don't really want to watch guides, even though I don't really get how to increase my damage or survivability in games like this. So I rarely get very far.
my biggest issue is that if you have no off hand weapon (nor shield), it doesnt count as unarmed so you cant use unarmed skills. It auto switch weapons and its bullshit.
Act1 was like hell for me as monk but afer the start of atc2 i got a strong staff and then the game was ez mode. Its so strange. act 1 was hell and then the rest was ez...

It’s crazy strong too. I’m doing 10k dps on my monk at the end of act 2
Until Warrior gets more fleshed out (hopefully on release of the new classes/weapons) Monk is the go-to melee
Invoker seems to be the dominant ascension ATM but it may be anecdotal. How are Acolyte of Chayula faring?

i have 120 hours on monk deep into late game. the hardest part of the game for me was late act 3. other then that it was a breeze and love this class.
I think the monk should have some lower level chaos melee option as well..
No joke the most fun class in the game

I don't know why, but mid act 2 my monk just got wrecked. Getting charged staff was huge. However nothing got easier. Much more prefer Merc.
Simply a skill issue
@@MrCemki Does it make you feel better to be that guy?
You really need to keep up with gearing, specially your weapon. Got stuck in Act 3 till I got lucky with double physical quarterstaff.

Do people forget that the game is not done?? What do you mean monk literally shares that side of the tree with shadow which uses daggers and traps

I wanna like monk, but man I just can’t stop playing infernalist.

I'm having a stroke off how you worded this. What are you saying exactly?
Having a shield equipped negates barehand?

Cool 🙂👍
Sorc is way overpowered. 1 shot bosses and dominated leader board (about 1/2 is sorc). But dev rather nerf everyone else.
Early game monk is Strangely very terrible
