  • Today I make my own wiggle snake toys out of wood! This is my contribution a collaborative project for Make It Matter, an effort to help those in need by raising money for charities across the world (in this case, autism awareness). Note that this is not intended for small children because of fragility and choking hazards.
    This video and project was created as part of a collaboration between 21 talented makers across the world.
    The purpose of this collaboration is to raise awareness to the hardship and difficulties families and children face every day when it comes to the disability and/or sickness of a child/children.
    Every country in the world struggles to give the support both financially and physically that families with sick and disabled children desperately need.
    Steven Twydell set up a campaign on the back of this amazing collaboration to help raise funds for children’s Charities around the world. The campaign is called Make It Matter.
    All the projects made in this collaboration will be auctioned between the 18th and 25th of February on the Make It Matter web site here :- www.makersmakeitmatter.com All information regarding this campaign can also be found on the website.
    The proceeds from this collaboration will be divided equally and sent to a children’s Autism charity in each of the countries the collaborators are from.
    Please click on each link below and watch each makers video for this collaboration. Don’t forget to subscribe, like and share all of these amazing and generous makers !!

      Me too. And I've had this on my long list of future projects for over a year now. So this worked out to be a great time to knock it out because there happens to be a wiggle snake with very similar color scheme in Toy Story. He's Robot's buddy.

    The snake turned out fantastic Steve! Obviously you made some jigs since you are making "a lot" of the snakes! The magnetic base and numerous attachments are great and almost as interesting as the snake(s)! Glad to see you in the shop again. Excellent collaboration and cause!

      Not only did I want the body segments to be consistent, I also want to be able to make some snakes for myself (and others). The jigs make them so much easier to churn out. Of course, that's only part of the story; I still have to do a lot of hand sanding to do the final smoothing, turn the tails and make the heads and so on. But over all, the jigs saved a LOT of work and headaches. Thanks for watching; I always appreciate seeing you around! You've been supportive since my early UA-cam days.

      Thank you, Steve, for watching and for all of your time and effort to put this collaborative effort together. I know it's a cause that means a lot to you. That said, I couldn't dance a jig if you paid me. And making jigs is something I do only out of love for accuracy, repeatability and safety. The real jig rocker is Mr. Swan; the "Izzanator" (I've never called him that before. I hope he doesn't kick my ass. We all know he could with no problem!) But thank you anyway ;) I'm glad I was able to be a part of this. I missed out on a lot of collabs and challenges last year. It's nice to participate this time.

      Hey Chris. Yeah, it was quite an ordeal. Well, making the set of jigs was. The actual making of the snake was pretty simple and straightforward. Actually, I can think of simpler jigs (router jigs) to make more of the segment cuts. But - given the hard deadline - I didn't want to risk running into complications. I knew these were a sure bet.

      Hey John, I appreciate your watching. I may do a video about the jigs at some point. A lot of people seem to be intrigued by them. I didn't explain them in the video because I know the chances of anyone actually wanting to go through all the trouble to make them is very slim. But I suppose it might be helpful to share the concept of each one. Once you understand exactly what each one does it's fairly straightforward to create jigs that will accomplish the same objective.
      Thanks for the feedback.

    Great wiggle snake.

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  7 років тому

      Thank you, Sir! I don't know. Probably not. I just thought through all the operations I'd have to perform in the build and - before even starting - took some time to determine the best order of operations and how I'd have to hold each piece to get it done safely. From there it all just came together. I considered recording how I made the individual jigs. But then I realized it would have potentially put me in way too tight a time crunch. I think I showed enough of each to give anyone who really wanted to take the time to reproduce my jigs the information they need to create their own.
      Frankly, there are easier ways to make the body segments if you're only doing a handful. But I wanted to have the ability to churn out segments by the dozen sometime in the future. I just need to come up with a print out some head patterns and I'll be set. After all, this snake is too cool not to at least make some for myself (and some more to give away and/or sell later down the line). But for now, only this one completed snake exists. I don't want to devalue it and potentially harm the auction price.

      I really appreciate your support, Terry! Yeah, that router jig was the only way I could think of to cut the notch safely and accurately every time. I spent a lot of time making all the jigs, but now that I have them I can use them to churn out more parts with ease in the future. Because, hey, I want some of these snakes for myself too (and possibly for gifts)!
      I too had some of these as a child and always thought they were cool. And since I've been planning for quite some time now to make one - and there's one in Toy Story - this ended up being my chance to do so. A win-win for all involved.

      Pshht, give me a break; Izzy Swan is the jig master. I'm just a jig wannabe. But I fully understand the value of custom jigs and make them whenever I feel they will benefit a project (and allow for future production). When it comes to accuracy, consistency and safety, it's hard to beat a good jig. Thanks for watching, Ken!

  • @dogwoodtales
    @dogwoodtales 7 років тому +2

    nicely done! mega dittos to the comments below.
    now here is a case of hind sight 20/20. if I were doing this for the first time I probably would have done it the same way you did, but having watched you blaze the trail afforded me the opportunity to think of this ...
    instead of flipping the dowels over to cut one cheek and then the other on the ends, make the jig to slide side to side with adjustable stops.
    so cut one cheek then slide over and cut the other. seems to me like that would shave off a lot of time collectively.
    I like the magnetic head joint! but do you think there are any concerns with that being a choke hazard? heck, my kids would lose it before choking on it anyway and we'd have a headless snake lol.

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  7 років тому +2

      Ray, I actually did think of that. But this seemed to be slightly less involved. I designed the jigs to be micro-adjustable. The main band saw sled has an adjustment screw at the front that limits travel. Once that was established, the first 2 overlays were set just right. The final overlay has X and Y axis fine adjustments to allow me to dial in the critical cheek/shoulder cuts. And the second insert has its own X-axis micro-adjustablilty. Having the carriage do the shift side to side thing was my original thought. But it felt like it was going to over-complicate it AND potentially be hindered by any saw dust that got in the way.
      But yeah, I like and agree with your line of thinking. In the end, however, it didn't feel like it was going to be enough of a benefit to move forward with it. Though I'm sure it could be done and made to work just fine. Concerning the detacheable head. I did think of the choke hazard. But then I realized that this is an item that's a little too delicate to be a child's toy. It's more of novelty for grown-ups. So I decided no to worry about it. When it's listed for sale, I'll be sure it's known that it is NOT intended for young kids.
      Actually, the reason I went with the magnets at all is because the snake in Toy Story has his head turned so that it can raise its body and keep the head level. But, in reality, none of the wiggle snakes I've even seen is made that way. Al the real wiggle snakes I;m aware of have the head level with the "plane of wiggle". So I decided to make it rotate, allowing for the best of both worlds.

      Wood 'n' Stuff w/ Steve French hmm ... I didn't think about the saw dust issue. good point to take into consideration when planning any jig.

      Hey Dennie, great to see you here! I love it the drill press. The good far outweighs the bad. I'm going to have a detailed review on it written up within the next couple weeks (on HomeFixated.com, the site I write project and review articles for). Thanks for watching!

      Hey! According to Google Translator, that says "This guy sucks, I follow all his videos." I'm going to assume that's an error in translation, otherwise you probably wouldn't watch all of my videos. So with that interpretation in mind: Thank you very much! I appreciate your watching and commenting!

    I am a subscriber to your channel and enjoy your videos very much. Recently, UA-cam did
    something to their software that makes it difficult for me see your new videos. After signing in, I was always able to click on the "subscriptions" button and see which of my subscribed channels had posted new videos. On Friday, March 10th this feature went away but it came back on Saturday, March 11 and worked until Friday March 17th, when it went away again. It has still not returned to this date. It is difficult to go through all my subscriptions in order to see those who have posted new videos. This is especially true when you get the nitwits that post other You Tubers videos under their own name.
    I have been informing UA-cam of this problem every day but do not seem to be getting any response at all. Everyone suffers here, not just your subscribers.
    I am hoping that you have some influence with UA-cam and can contact them to help remedy this situation. Many thanks.

      Hey Stephen. Trust me, I know how frustrating it is. UA-cam is constantly messing up the things that work. If it works properly now, you can rest assured it won't in a month. I'm just a little tiny, puny channel, which means I have zero influence with UA-cam. However, the subscriptions feed has been working fine for me lately. So I'm not sure what to suggest, sorry. I appreciate your watching, even though it's sometimes a pain to find new videos from the creators you're subscribed to. Hopefully YT will fix whatever is messing up for you.
      Though it's worth noting that if you have more than one account, it's possible you're not logged in to the account that's subscribed to me (I've been there before). Also, my newest video should be uploaded within the next day. With luck, it'll show up in your feed.
