  • This is the oldest John Deere Model D tractor known to exist, Serial No. 30404. It was built in 1923 for the 1924 production year and shipped to Minot ND. In this video, volunteers start it up for the owner after giving it some yearly maintenance. It was featured in the May/June 2016 issue of Antique Power magazine (Volume 28 Issue 4) in an article by Candace Brown titled "Spoker D." Copies can be ordered at www.antiquepower.com

I know almost nothing about tractors (aside from the metal miniature one a beloved friend gave me) but this is very evocative -- the men obviously revering this wonderful machinery; the bright paint job; the percussive racket of the engine. This video transported me to a world I'd never visited, which is a wonderful experience.

+swingyoucats I'm glad you enjoyed it and that I could share this with the world. The owner is a remarkable older gentleman, respected and beloved by many, such as these friends who came from far and wide to help.

According to my records, John Deere Model D SN 30404 was built 6-16-1923. Interestingly, JD D SN 30403 was built 7-11-23; JD D SN 30402 and 30401 were built on 11-30-23. The earliest recorded D tractor, SN 30405, was built on 6-6-23. The first 1924 model was SN 30414, built on 1-16-1924.

I started farming for my dad the 1928 model a John Deere and Goshen County Wyoming. High was 15 years old and he started me Dryland wheat farming. I finally got rubber tires Hyundai tractor in about 1943. We welded rims on to the wheels I bought rubber tires for the back and had old truck tires mounted on the front of the tractor. This is a hard to believe story that he had me strip farming hey about 400 Acres of Summer f a l l o w
