After watching you disassemble the steering clutches, I always wondered why I’ve seen some D2s where the levers had no tension on them. I thought if the clutches froze, you wouldn’t be able to pull the level. However, with your explanation now I know why! This is one part of a D2 I had never gotten into.

If the cavity these parts reside in have a single vent, it would be
possible to fit tubing and have it run through a desiccant canister .
Any air drawn in as the tractor goes through temperature changes will
have any moisture absorbed before it gets inside. You can use those chemical desiccant dehumidifiers that are intended to be hung in closets to keep clothing from growing mold.
It would be worth doing for the period the machine is mothballed and removed when it is back in use (if ever).
Alternatively ,you could remove an access plate and stuff a desiccant pack into the cavity.

Wonder if that bundle of decent frictions you put in that ammo can would benefit from dessicant in there with them? Guess it depends on how good the can seals. And anybody who wonders if there is asbestos in old friction lining (of any kind) ain't been around as long as I have. Contrary to modern belief, the stuff don't hurt you in small quantities, it was the people who worked with it long term who found out the hard way that the miracle mineral could hurt you bad.

I few questions for Squatch or who ever can answer: how often you have to oil the bearings in the steering clutch compartment? Would you use the modern clutch material on the friction discs instead of the old asbestos?(in case there is no bimetallic conversion) Personally I don't know what the clutch material is for the D2 steering clutches. But back in the old day's asbestos was cheap and available to use. Good idea on the exercises on the crawler, doing it myself once every month. I got that idea from a very old man who had run through 5 + crawlers in his life. So he knew what he was telling.

    • @SuperMAZ007
      @SuperMAZ007 3 роки тому

@@squatch253 Thank you for the answer. I think there is a company that dose make bimetallic friction discs for every crawler model CAT,Allison etc. I don't have CAT D2 literature to compare if the Soviet engineers did change the size of the discs or the number of teeth on the hub. Keep in mind they had to go from inch to metrics. Logic say's they might have done that but may have not been the case at all. To get verification I need to get the CAT D2 and Allison crawler friction discs and hub size and compare that to the Soviet crawler KD-35 and DT-54 ones. So far the load springs look at least exactly that of the CAT D2 and thous are known to fail also on the Soviet crawlers.

Does that old friction material contain any asbestos? Its good to reclaim some of the bigger parts like the hubs and also parts that don't wear out but to be honest there is no way I would put anything second hand back in the clutch pack. Being that deep into the machine I would hate to get driving it and realise that the clutches are not working at their best. Doing a job like this one has to expect some expense and I thought that the cost of the clutch packs you bought were quite reasonable but then I do live in rip off Great Britain.

Not precisely on topic, but closely related. I picked up a collection of early 50s Popular Mechanics magazines, years ago. From about 1952,there was Buick ad,very proudly stating that the majority of their cars now went for more than 100,000 miles before they were given up for good.
A WWII Jeep was completely worn out by 30,000 miles, mostly off road.
Tires lasted a fraction of the mileage of nowadays.
Patient work by decades of engineers have slowly improved the length of life of just about every sub component of vehicles.
Batteries used to be heavy glass jars with asphalt tops. Think about that in a construction vehicle on tracks. So,as he says, improvements in starting systems, also improvements in diesel injector systems made the weight and cost of the pony motors unnecessary.

@@squatch253 when I was younger, I couldn't understand why men collected and restored old tube AM radios. I eventually figured out what you wrote above. I'm still not terribly interested in restoring old tube radios, especially if they only cover the commercial AM band, but I understand why. You may not have wanted to understand videocameras, but you now have to, to post on UA-cam!

Exclusive content for "members". You can do that, but from my point of view it really sucks. I have deleted my subscription.

@@squatch253 Thank you for the very detailed answer.
If I had suspected that you were an unreasonable person, I would not have commented. :-)
Subsequently introduced payment barriers have the nimbus that those who don't want to pay will only get to see the workshop swept up.
But yes, I don't give up a subscription to a magazine until I'm convinced of its quality. And that's only if I've already bought the magazine from time to time.
In that respect, I don't think the comparison between a magazine and UA-cam is 100% apt.
"I don't understand what it has to do with the public feed."
UA-cam also informs about posts that are only for members. This is certainly UA-cam's calculation and not caused by you.
      kind regards
