"Russian Roulette" - old Roland W-30 diskette from 1991

- One of my early '90s performance-diskettes that I made on the Roland W-30 sampling workstation. This one features samples from a '60s special FX vinyl records, a 78rpm Latin American music vinyl record, a bass line (I either used a '70s Yamaha fretless bass or my friend's Warwick, don't remember) and several drum loops from DJ records/ sample CDs of the era.
Damn! That sounds so 90s, and yet so fresh at the same time
I remember that sample. "You play Russian Roulette this way." I hear that sample on Bomb The Bass' Beat Dis.
Yes - they must have sampled it from the same record I sampled it from. It was a double vinyl record called "Spectacular Sound FX" or something like that - I still remember I bought my copy at a flea market in the '80s... I think it was from the '60s. There was a whole skit about the Russian roulette and the joke was at the end that the guy who shot himself said "Now let's play again". It was to demonstrate the (then new) stereo effect. Also there was an impressive skit from a train station with the locomotive, and a Viennese ball.... I think I still have that record in Italy.
@@SynthManiaDotCom The _"Russian roulette"_ sample appears to come from a stereo demonstration LP called *"Stereo Spectacular Demonstration & Sound Effects".* See UA-cam, side 1:

The sample appears on side 1 at 6:04. It's called "Moscou and a cartoon in stereo". :)
The LP's called "Spectacular Sound Effects" appear to be from the nineties (there are also 90's CD's called "100 spectacular sound FX" etc.). See UA-cam, volume 1:

@@SynthManiaDotCom Omg I had that album when I was a kid!
@@SynthManiaDotCom I should check with my parents (2000 km from me...) whether they still have that record. It was a demonstration record for stereo sound. Wasn't there also a scene with fire engines racing past, with bells, sirens and horns?
From memory (and this is a VERY long time ago), after the shot the guy with the Russian accent says "ha ha, you lose!", whereupon the guy with the English accent says something along the lines of "how about we make it two out of three?". Mind that I hadn't started learning English at the time.
@@SeverityOne The record itself was archived by ArchiveAnnex (Oddity Archive): ua-cam.com/video/9tly3aLdFeM/v-deo.html
Russian Roulette section starts at 6:10.
Always a joy when you break out the old Skool Paulo!
You just keep raising the bar helping to push me every time I watch your vids! Keep up the great work you are an inspiration to us all👍
Thank you very much!
Old diskettes are a treasure trove. Well, sometimes a "Why the heck did I save this?" ;-)
Fun to dig through the old libraries!! Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
What a phenomenal collection! Hypnotic.
Catchy tune for something consisting of such a small amount of samples! :)
Awesome! Used to have a W30 back in the early-mid 90's. Cool machine.
Same here!
I really like this track
I thought it was pick a disk at random and that was the roulette part. I would also watch that!
This was great! Nostalgia for me with those sounds for sure 😎
Glad you enjoyed!
'Let It Go' is the pitched down opening break from KC and the Sunshine Band's 'Let It Go', sampled by Hijack as I recall.
Yes, you're right, I must have sampled it from there. I have that record.
Awesome! I love the w-30. Cool video!
Thanks a lot!
Erick Sermon used the W-30 for a large amount of EPMD’s & Redman’s early 90’s tracks
Killin' it!
Ah the good ol days of sampling, I miss my Emax and Zero G sample cds.
excellent video ... powerful Roland W30 !
Wow Paolo sounds great!
Awesome jam, loved it.
Thanks!
great video Paolo. choping , timestreching and reversing the samples were "the days" in the studio back in early 2000. name of the game: AKAI s3000.other gear yamaha w5 and cs 15, SCSI ,MESA , PENTIUM MMX 166MHz and so on
That was amazing. Please do more videos checking out old floppies.

That was really enjoyable!
Old school and cool. Nice find.
God I love your channel
It reminds me of my Roland MS-1 sampler doing the same type of thing. The MS-1 was pretty basic though.
Ohh, that was amazing!
Glad you think so!
i had no idea u made sample loop stuff this is cute
The roulette sample sounded like what Junkie XL used in his "Black Jack" track from his (imo) fantastic album "Big Sounds of the Drags"
Might not be a bad idea to re-save the data back onto the floppy to give it a fresh start.
Frickin' cool as heck is this! It kind of reminds of the music of Dee-light, which was very much of that time, no? Cheers!
This has gold school/boom bap vibes. Interesting to see this genre from you Paolo. Very dope stuff! I am looking into a hardware sampler myself, though probably something rackmount like the Akai S2000 or the Roland S550.
They sound cool - just keep in mind that hardware samplers are "dinosaurs" in 2021. It's a lot, a lot faster and optimal to use a DAW today...
@@SynthManiaDotCom Good point! This is very true. I may end up just hooking up my PC to my current setup. We’ll see. I hear Mainstage is a good keyboard player tool for live use.
If you're getting an oldskool akai you might as well go for an s5000/s6000. You can use scsi2sd to drag and drop samples to/from it. Great kit.
Amazing 😁
Thanks!
Hope you and the family are well..........ah the old samples
Awesome!
Thanks!
No school like the old school.
Still have a W30. And two Zero-G sampling discs. Unfortunately it's collecting dust. My house is to small to put it somewhere to use it.
Better with a disk than a gun!
Amazing
Thanks!
Hi Paolo The W30 as you say is a dinosaur in comparison to modern daw capabilities but theres something very hands on and nostalgic about using and collecting the older gear, It forces a different kind of creativity and sound, and of course I own 3 of them 2 are working and one for spares. I must get the scsi 2 sd though, have you tried one are they any good? I know old scsi hdd's are likely on there last legs now.
Congratulations on the performance! It would be nice to have the * .out image of the floppies to try on my Roland DJ-70 MKII. Can you share them?
I'm waiting for a special on Pippo Baudo's diskette! ❤️
😂 Thank you, I have disks even "worse" than that one, Gianni :D hahaha will do at some pont :D
Sounds great! 3:26
i use to have this keyboard ,i liked very much ,it will be cool to put an hdd inside
That Simon Bolivar sample is absolutely incredible! Any idea where it came from?
An old 78rpm Latin American record that was in my family collection. Unfortunately I don't remember the details of the band/title, although I might still have that record in Italy and could check the next time I'm there
@@SynthManiaDotCom How absolutely cool!! I love it!
Still love my W30 even though it's in need of a bit of TLC!
Hi Paolo.... Hope you and the family are doing well and enjoying life :)
So nice to see your W-30 Disk drive is still working... My Brother PDC-100 Sequencer (1988)
Drive does not work anymore... :( Any suggestions?
Firstly I'd suggest but check the belt some of the belts have degraded and could stop working.
@@SirRigbyBaconKaiser I took it apart and did just that using an old belt from a cassette drive.. But I should invest in genuine disk drive belts. It will read but not write.. Cleaned the head and all that. I really want to make it work again as I have tons of disks with songs from that era.. :) Thanks!
Hey 5arge, yeah, if the parts are gone, the best would be to replace the whole drive - they do pop out on eBay. Alternatively, you can look into the modern flash-based replacement drives
@@SynthManiaDotCom What a great Idea... Flash based replacement... Nice Thanks :)
@@5argetech56 Yeah, I know they make several models for older samplers, companies like this, but I think there are several more today www.gotekemulator.com/
Dopeee 😄
Thanks 🔥
hey synthmana I had a question regarding the drums on Madonna's "Take A Bow". Do you know the drum machine or the drums that were used on that particular record? Would love to get ahold of those drums!
I’d really like to know as well
I'm not sure but IIRC from old magazine interviews he used Linn 9000 / MPCs ua-cam.com/video/tjd5EzzYRlY/v-deo.html

When will you add demos of the Korg 01/W patches and combis to your website?
Which one do you need?
They are done already, I just need to find the time to upload them.
@@SynthManiaDotCom Okay!
Ibe now sampled you S.Bolivatr sample into my s10
Would you have sequenced this back in the day or played live ?
Played live in the "Performance" mode of the W-30
That was epic hahhha :)
Giving me some Boris Blank vibes
Wy is that so good xD
Excellent , top
Russian roulette 😄
Thanks! 😃
Save this on Gotek emulator, Paolo! :D
Wait wait please help me, my .w30 files wont be readed after writed down on them using sdisk (Also try with omniflop) i can't load song with my w30
I use SDISK for decades without any problem (.out files, not .w30 files). What drive are you using? What version of SDISK are you using? What W-30 file are you trying to write and read?
@@SynthManiaDotCom i'm not sure but .out and .w30 are also working I also got the 1.10 system on a .w30, I did make a copy using OmniFlop and it's working ... Imma bit confused ...
@@ElectroniQ So you don't need my help. OK. Bye.
@@SynthManiaDotCom yup, that's it i use SDISKW wich is the NEW version

Yeah, sometimes it's amazing what you find when you go through some old stuff. In the 90s I used a Roland MV-30 workstation quite a lot. I hadn't touched it for years when just recently I dug it out an loaded a few songs - there was some stuff I had recorded 25 years ago I didn't remember at all (some of it quite nice, actually). When I put together my first home studio in the late 80s and early 90s I also fancied the Alesis Midiverb or the Microverb as a digital reverb - I ended up buying the Boss SE-50 which is not only a much more versatile multi effects processor but also has a great reverb which I love this day. Retro Ahoi! ;-)

Some filters and a big beat and it s a fat boyslim banger :)
My thoughts exactly! 😅 Filter the Latin thing in, keep it as the base sample - add a ”Levi’s commercial” type big beat. Sprinkle the Russian Roulette sample, add bass. Voila 😀
