thanks for reviewing this detachable. Hope more manufactures get into this 2-in-1 and detachable design with the latest high-end specs! This would be just the perfect device for literally everyone.
I want some detachables that have an actual decent keyboard the only ones I've seen are those $200-300 pieces of almost crap. I actually UPGRADE to a surface go 2 the LOWEST model that's how bad the one I had was. But the keyboard is nowhere near as good. The thing I had didn't have a kickstand because the keyboard had a hinge in it. If I were designing a high-end version it would have a kickstand for if you want to use it propped up but not with the keyboard attached. The only thing I can think of similar to my device that was super high-end is that surface book with the GPU inside the keyboard.
I currently have a 2017 Surface Pro that I paid $2232 for. About the same time I contracted Covid my Surface contracted "Flicker-gate". It flickers so bad at times I have to connect an external monitor just to use it. I'll not own another one. This detachable looks like what I need and this review has sold me. The Lenovo is cheaper than both the Surface and the Dell by a significant amount. Lisa, thank you for this review... I'll place another post after I buy and use it.
Lisa may proudly display the Humerus/humorous T-shirt, but her reviews are no joke. She is the Platinum Standard for Technical Reviews of everything related to laptops.
exactly, i really want one but i think the prices on the surface pros are highway robbery. i have a surface pro 5 from 2017 and the accessories prices are ridiculous. also i was one of the idiots that bought a 4 gb ram surface pro and now have to suffer trying to use windows 10 with such a small amount of ram
So basically the Thinkpad X12 detachable is the spiritual successor of the Thinkpad X1 tablet line that doesn't get updated beyond the X1 tablet gen 3 that was released in 2018. That is good to know. I have a X1 tablet gen 1 that I got in 2019, and I am starting to look for a replacement. I initially wanted a Surface Pro, but unless you gun for the highest spec (which is so very expensive), usually for the lower specced S.Pros, for the same price there are better specced options. Also, comparing to X1 tablet gen 2: I'm a bit disappointed that the fingerprint sensor is now placed on the keyboard/cover as opposed to placed on the body itself like X1 tablet lines. This introduces the risk of not being able to use the fingerprint sensor if the type cover breaks (which *will* happen eventually, since you are essentially putting a ribbon connector through the flexible fabric hinge). Mine just did and I have to obtain a replacement. But since only the keyboard is there and I can always use an external keyboard, I don't really lose much. Also a bit concerned for the fewer number of ports. No dedicated display ports and afaik no usb 3.0.
Hello Lisa. Are you sure the keyboard cannot work when detached? I thought that was one of the differentiators from a Surface Pro. Great reviews as always, thank you.
I always like Lisa's no nonsense reviews, but on this one, I would have liked to hear about serviceability (if there is any) and the un-attach and re-attach feature. I have gotten complaints in the past from users of some of Lenovo's tablet laptops
Forever I've wanted a surface pro with thinkpad keyboard. I give up and assume a x390 yoga is as close as I'll get. Then a couple weeks later this is released and for less $ than I paid for the x390.
Hi Lisa. Thanks so much for yet another awesome review. Does this unit let you put in your own NVMe drive, or is it something you can't open? Also, what's the key travel distance?
Not Lisa, but the X12 Detachable uses a field-replaceable M.2 2242 SSD - likely similar to the WD SN530 used by the other recent ultralight Thinkpads. Lenovo considers these field-replaceable but NOT customer-replaceable. Source: PSREF and the hardware maintenance manual. In practice the replacement process looks much the same as in other similar form-factor tablets, like in the HP Elite X2 1012. Because the 2242 form-factor, it’s difficult to find better SSDs than what already comes with the device. WRT keyboard, one review quotes the key travel as 1.5mm, though I haven’t confirmed it; this caught my attention because it’s more than the 1.35mm key travel in some other recent Thinkpads.
New buyers of laptop now should really wait for another 6-18ths mths for ARM-based CPUs that run on Windows OS. They should cheaper and higher performance compared to Intel and AMD Ryzen CPUs.

This is currently the last Windows tablet with a 16:9 screen. You can miss me with it being outdated and 3:2 is the new "standard", but I always prefer to have taller screen over wider screen when using tablet in Portrait mode.
I wish she'd talked about the sound quality. Not typically something you'd think of for this type of computer, but running a thinkpad x1 3rd gen tablet and I can say the speaker is the only downside.

There are 6 major Tablets.
