Big problem in the NHS is the amount of money being funnelled to private organisations - done during the 90s and Labour years to "alleviate the back logs". We've got contractor agency staff and medical companies already doing vast amounts of work at higher cost... and it still can't cope. A big part of that cost is the extra red tape that PFI requires - a bit like leaving the EU, if you increase system barriers & complexity you increase cost and decrease quality. Mental health provision in this country is almost all private now. Anyone feel like there's an adequate provision? The money we spend 'on' the NHS that supposedly keeps increasing? That's the same pot of money that the the PFI partners get paid from. Why does no-one ask what proportion of the NHS budget that is? Let's really see how much of our failing NHS is currently private before we go charging off down the road of 'flexing out' using the private sector.
Given all that, why would trying to tackling the current backlog with "Private medicine vouchers" and bolting on more complexity do anything but accelerate the decline? Bad idea. Those medical staff still have to come from somewhere - meaning immigration until we've sorted out NHS working conditions and trained up a new generation of staff which in medicine takes years and years. Someone still has to manage the contracts - more cost. Private sector do what they do by cutting corners to maximise profits, and are protected from major failure by the arms length nature of PFI (see Fujitsu and the Post Office) so we don't get any accountability - and we get little enough accountability in this country as it is.
Get the private sector, other than medical/medicine suppliers, right off the NHS teat and bring all those services back in house - it WILL be cheaper. Remove the layer managing the interface between NHS and all those provider contracts.
The answer to the NHS is to take development of our own population's skills seriously, to do everything we can to make the working lives of NHS workers bearable (let's start with help with housing and parking costs, discounts on council tax, that sort of thing, as well as massively ramping up recruitment), and return control of (and budgets for) social care to them, which should never have been split off and given to local authorities (thanks labour!), because it increased complexity, increased the number of gaps people can fall through, and are not integrated with NHS needs so we get bed backlogs - it's taken 20 years and a pandemic to start getting them to really work together properly again and it's still full of barriers between organisations because they're all funded and therefore motivated differently.
It's been allowed to get into a state where it IS going to take 10 years and a ton of money to 'fix'. If we do anything private-related to help us get through then that all those contracts need a very short fixed term on them so that the companies are motivated to do a good, not cheap, job. If private sector is so amazing we should pay them to lead the way on quality and efficiency (not cost and efficiency) and help us develop our new processes, in order for our NHS to stand on it's own again.
It is going to take a lot of money and a lot of time - like everything else that's broken now. 14 years of bare minimum or less investment will do that to a nation.
DONT. VOTE. TORY. They just want to wreck the place and let big business feed on the remains and tell you to suck it up it's good for you. I thought people learned this in the 80s but apparently not.
DONT. VOTE. LABOUR. They do the exact same thing when it comes to institutions and our rights, but they tell you they love you whilst they're doing it. I thought people had learned this in the 90s/00s but apparently not.
There are other parties out there. There are other electoral systems to demand other than first past the post. Stop being fooled by 2 parties forcing a hand on you in perpetuity. They need to know we WILL turn away from them or they will never change our voting system, they'll never fix these problems because it's in their interests to have something to argue loudly but vaguely about every 5 years .

The problem is, much like here in the U.S., the parliamentary system aside, the two unprincipled major parties fail the country and people they're supposed to serve. It's devolved to a competition for power first and foremost, the public interests a distant second if at all and only to the point of avoiding revolution and violent overthrow.

Emily Thornberry's statement about when Labour left government (2010) that the NHS was "sorted" is true. The Labour governments from 1997-2010 invested the necessary money and kept waiting lists low. The NHS was not a burning issue amongst the UK public. It was regarded as the jewel in the crown, that everyone was very proud of.
Once the Tories took over, they began to deciminate it, and all public services.
Their ultimate goal is to ensure that it does completely crumble so that it will privatise it. as they have with so many other public services which they have ruined.
Once privatised, there will be CEOs, Boards of Directors, and shareholders enriching themselves and costs for medical treatment will soar.
The US is the worst example of private healthcare in the western world.

The UK has been living way beyond her means for decades and now the chickens are coming home to roost. I’m a retired NHS trained registered nurse and was damn proud of it but it took working overseas to make me realise that there are many other countries with infinitely better health systems. The problems are complex and many. Staffing, quality of staff, procurement, waiting lists, old computer systems, crumbling buildings, the list goes on.
What happens when more people want to go private? So many health care staff work across both sectors. Nobody seems to have thought about that one. And the whole world is short of health care staff. The way things seem to be going no one is going to want to work in the uk.
I’m lucky enough to now live in Australia. I have to say while not perfect it’s much fairer system.
Last year my now 89 year old mum who lives in the uk needed a hip replacement ..she had it done privately as the waiting list was so long. It was straightforward but cost £16000!
Just a few months later a friend (in Australia) , his father in law who had emigrated 2 years previously needed the same op. He also went private but it cost him $18000! That’s roughly £8500!!!Meaning UK cost was almost double that of Australia. Why should this be so? Our health care professionals earn considerably more than uk equivalent!! So the uk are making a killing pardon the pun. Such greed. It is well known that a lot of over servicing goes on within the private health care sector. A year before her op my mum had a stroke and I didn’t think she would be fit enough for the hip op. But on having her follow up the consultant told that while actual op had been a success her mobility was still limited because of the stroke!! I believe she was ripped off.

I guess I’m old school , but I’m so disappointed at what’s happened to the NHS. I try to visit the uk every couple of years and each time things seem to get worse than before.
I even heard recently that uk trained health care staff will be asked to undertake a bridging course to get a visa to work in places like the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. This is in order to meet the competency outcomes. Entry into the study is actually easier than it used to be under the traditional system and we are hearing stories of unis passing students when they are not yet competent as they are under pressure from government to get more qualified staff out there. No wonder people are leaving in droves . That’s an accident waiting to happen. You’ve always had to have half a brain to be a competent and proficient nurse. Academia is only part of it. Florence Nightingale will be turning in her grave!
Apologies for the rant but I’m really disappointed at what’s happened to the profession. It used to be against the RCN rules to go on strike and that’s a disappointment too.@@FEAR.LESS.

Not one person will be sent to Rwanda. Will refugees who have risked their lives and spent their life savings getting to Dover be deterred by the very slim possibility of being sent to Rwanda - a less than 2% chance? No. Are any aircraft available for these two way deportation flights? No. Two way because taking into account the returns agreement, the net numbers will remain the same as we ferry Rwandans back to the UK. Even if aircraft are tracked down, there will be mass protests against these flights at Boscombe Down, or wherever they might depart from. So has the perimeter been secured to cope with protestors, and if so, how many more millions have been spent on security? Come on Mr Sunhat, what's the REAL motive behind this unworkable plan? Is it to enable you to shamelessly blame Labour for vowing to do what is morally and legally right in promising to bin this revoltingly dishonest and hugely expensive ruse? Or to blame the "unelected House of Lords" for injecting commonsense and pragmatism into an unworkable, illegal and spurious ploy? Yeah right, point accusing fingers at the Lords, where the CONservatives have a 100 seat majority! Or is this a delaying tactic to buy enough time to clinch a lucrative UK/India/Infosys trade deal before being forced out of office? Or to provoke a handful of refugees to the point of despair so they appeal against being sent to an unsafe autocracy? Whereupon the government will pounce at the excuse to overrule UK and International courts when they attempt to do their duty in upholding the rule of law and imparting humanitarian justice? Is it part of a surreptitious plan to further erode the Separation of Powers? Another step towards deregulation? For example, if the government weaken the independence of the Judiciary by overruling, bullying or bypassing the courts over matters of asylum law, they'll feel free to do exactly the same for employment law. Maternity leave, paid leave, working hours directives, minimum wages, health and safety obligations, human rights - all very costly and totally anathema to the concept of high profit "de-regulated" Free Ports and SEZs. We see the real motives behind this Rwanda debacle - not all of us have been brainwashed by the Daily Whatevers. The polls show that the clear 'will of the people' is not to clamour for specious Rwandan ruses. The undeniable 'will of the people' is actually for Mr Rich Sunhat to call the removals lorry and vacate No. 10.

please stop living in dreamland and come back to reality. what do you think Labour would do? Do you think Labour would solve this issue? They have no plan and never will. all Labour are interested in is increasing their vote share by getting these people into the country, following the socialist ideolgy of providing for them at the expense of the UK taxpayer. Labour have no intrest in solving this crisis. But then if you agree Labour could not solve this who else do you think would? I suggest you do some research on this topic because there are many factors to this mess. There are approximately 17000 individuals roaming around the country with absolutley no knowledge of their wareabouts. This is a risk to those individuals for various reasons (slave labour just one example) and a risk to society where potentially known criminals are at large. Would you feel the same if a member of your family was a victim of crime of one of these absconders? Ithink not. Oh please dont play the race card, because nothing I have said is racist, its just plain fact and common sense. The French Government could stop this ina heart beat, but why would they. They are happy to offload to the UK and there is evidence that the French government have been complicit in facilitating this.

Now country is being dictated to and irrevocably changed by small cabal of extremists whose only driving force is their own narrow self interests. No labour won't reverse these debilitating trends in one term.
