There was a comment here earlier that seemed to take light at my ignorance of such things from being a Protestant, and I just wanted to say that we can only learn that which we have been taught. I went to a church tour of a Greek Orthodox church, named after that Dormition, and the cantor in explaining the music sung on the Feast of the Dormition, explain the Dormition as the Orthodox version of the Assumption. Thus, why videos like this are so valuable for those of us outside the sphere of knowledge of Orthodox.
I know I am way late seeing this. But, I just want to say, as an Orthodox Christian, I am sorry that someone felt the need belittle you or anyone for that matter for the things you do not know. I appreciate you taking the time to learn about our Faith rather than having assumptions like may others do. I hope that person hasn't discouraged you from learning more. We want to encourage others to join the Church. Not be so prideful in our knowledge that we push others away. As my priest says..."We will all always be catechumens (students of the faith) and we will all always have something new to learn." God Bless. ☦️
I am always brought to tears when I see Christ holding His Mother's soul in this icon. The beauty of that moment and the promise for our own souls takes my breath away. Thank you for your work bringing the beauty of Orthodoxy to new audiences and inquirers in these wonderful videos.
Please pray for the miracle healing of my Heart teeth gums eyes ears stomach lungs and all the organs and parts of my body mind spirit and especially for my family's health and financial breakthrough. Dear Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God please intercede for my miracle healing and prayers. Please let me testify that you're still interceding for us 🙏 Thank You 🙏 All Glory And Praise Be To God 🙌 Thank You Lord God Almighty 🙏
This really changed my whole perspective on the icon, wow. I went to Dormition great vespers today but I was like "mehh i wont go to divine liturgy tomorrow" but hearing you say that this is why we SHOULD go to liturgy, i might go! Love your videos
Thanks for the timely posting. I watched this late last night and decided to go to Mass early this morning to celebrate our Mother. God is always on time! Beautiful icon.
Greeting from the Holy city jerusalem Can you please make a video explaining colors of icons and meanings also explain the iconostasis in the church and the levels of the iconography in the church Keep the good work up God bless you brother
I am currently learning about Orthodoxy and trying to convince my wife that we should convert from our Protestant church. If you haven't already, could you make a video explaining the steps of an Orthodox liturgy, what to expect, etc?
We are definitely planning on episodes like that, but I would heartily recommend going to Liturgy as you are now. Make a connection with the community and the priest. We have an expression in Orthodoxy of saying ‘come and see’. No amount of looking at what to expect will fully compare to just visiting us
Thank you friend for a great video explaining the details of the Dormition Icon. I have been looking for videos that explain the icons with no satisfying success, But the way you explain with highlights is ideal to me. I will now look for your other series of explaining The Holy Icons. Thank you so much 💛 All Glory to God
In the Philippines, we have a book called "Pasyong Mahal," an 18th century "epic" poem recounting the Passion narrative of Jesus. It is still read by Roman Catholics in the provinces during the Holy Week. What I find interesting about it is that it also contains the story of Mary's assumption into heaven. However, the Pasyong Mahal's depiction is closer, if not consistent, to the Orthodox "Dormition" instead of the Catholic "Assumption." Mary died, was buried, and was later assumed into heaven after 40 days. It also contains the Doubting Thomas episode as discussed in the video.
Among all this divine theology that we can see on this icon really like the fact that Christ took His mother’s soul to the Heaven! As we know Archangel Michael takes our souls and drives them to the Lord but Christ honoured His mother and came down Himself to take her pure soul! During my latest pilgrimage to Jerusalem some months ago, it was the first time that I payed attention and realised I should say that in the church at Gethsemane where the Tomb of Theotokos is there isn’t any Papal Latin chapel… Everywhere in the Holy Lands, where we have our Orthodox Churches built by St. Helena or later, there are always later additions like Armenian and Papal Latin chapels right next to ours! But inside the tomb of Theotokos there is our right on top of the gravestone, and 1-2 metres away the Armenian chapel. There’s isn’t any Papal chapel… It’s a bit stupid to say that but, that was when I realised that for God’s sake, these people truly don’t believe that Maria was died… There were no Roman Latins at the tomb of Gethsemane (Armenians were also absent) which at the end was nice because we had a peaceful atmosphere there and we prayed and honoured her in our Orthodoxy way, how she deserves it!
A good book might be 'The Orthodox Church' by Timothy (Bishop Kallistos) Ware. Topics like theosis and hesychasm are best first discussed with your priest. If you aren't going to an Orthodox Church yet, that's the best next step. Orthodoxy is far better learnt 'in real life' rather than just out of books. Come and see
Lovely, thank you. I wonder if you might be planning to cover the icon of the protection of the most holy Theotokos? Yesterday I finally realised that the fades icon on the front of the wooden baptismal cross my Greek Godmother gave me is this icon. I had thought it was Mary crossing her arms and holding hands with people but could never find it. Yesterday I looked again and prayed to find it and then I saw she was actually holding a cloth, which did turn up the right answer. I want to see can anyone restore it and the crucifixion on the other side.
As a protestant, I learned more about this theology by this video than ever before. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you all for this lesson.
Great video!
Great video❤ will you make video about icon of crucifixion ?
Possibly yes! There are just so many beautiful icons to explore.

Any orthodox literature you could recommend?
Also is there a video explaining what Theosis and hesycasm is?

We may yet look at that icon too! There are so many beautiful images to explore in our tradition.
@@Patristix Whichever you choose will be gladly received. Thank you!
I know the west has an extensive monastic tradition; what're some monastic traditions founded by the Orthodox church?
In Orthodoxy there's just monasticism, we don't have orders if that's what you're asking. Patristix has done a video on it.
😁👋🏻👍
