  • On my site I state, "...walking onions are not multiplier onions...They produce bulbils on top of a stalk and when a bulbil is planted, it will produce a single onion."
During 2023 I received an email from a woman in New Zealand who said, "Our [walking onions] do reproduce just like the potato onion in the ground bulbing out from one onion or from one bulbil we will get a whole cluster of onions..."
In my garden I had one bulbil that had produced a single bulb during the 2022 season. During the 2023 season that single bulb split into a cluster of bulbs that remained beneath the soil, not in a nest on top of the ground like potato onions, as the New Zealand woman mentioned. Also, they did not form true bulbs but remained small, more akin to green onions.
That cluster is what is in this video.
Although walking onion bulbs do split, I stand by my statement that they are not multiplier onions. Walking onions are Allium Cepa var. Proliferum - also known as Tree Onions, Top Setting Onions, Winter Onions and Egyptian Onions - whereas potato onions and shallots are Allium Cepa var. Aggregatum.

Yes, I'm sure there are many varieties of walking onions around the world. Thanks for pointing out barstow and trondheim! Happy gardening!
