It was a pleasure to meet you mate! If you need any info for Korea, send me a message on instagram @whereisdangram. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and hopefully you and your friends enjoy all the other videos from the let's gu series!! :)
Residents of Guryong Village are by no means poor. They have their own residential space, and the real estate in Guryong Village is just holding out without negotiating with the government to receive more compensation for redevelopment. The houses that are all falling down will exceed at least 1 million US dollars..
Great video my dude, shows the duality of the place really well! I love how people who don't have too much themselves are so open and willing to share, truly beautiful thing. Also this polish dude seems chill as fuck, nice of you to include him in the vid. Keep it up my G
Oh Dan, I love Korea and feel so sad for the common people. I wish I had money and could move there and help them. Breaks my heart that their own government doesn't care. They are such lovely people. 😥💗💗💗
The reason i knew was... on my bike i only change 1 of the numbers so it's quicker to open it, i thought it would be the same for that one and it was!!
I had the best pork of my life in Gangnam. Thank you for showing Guryong, I hadn't heard about that area and it's very interesting. The people in Korea were the nicest everywhere I went.
A tale of two cities…intra-dichotomy within…my sister tells me if you can’t handle the crowds at Costco…don’t bother going to Korea…I got nervous watching the line at subway…
A lot of poor Koreans who lived in shawnty towns all over Seoul were kicked out of their houses during 80s and 90s for redevelopment and gathered in guryong village. And in 2000s when price of Gangnam real estate went up a lot, more people moved in hopes of getting compensated by government. The government is trying to compensate them but there are lots of money on stake and people refuses to take the offer and have been negotating for years. So not all are innocent poor people some people moved in hopes of getting hand out from government. There are like 4 or 5 guyong community organizations that are all negotiating with government to get top dollars. Its not all innocent. A lot of money is in stake and it is web of complex interest conflicting together. The government offered them a community apartment for rental for rest of their life and they refused. They wanted their ownership in the new apartment which will certainly cost over millions. Korea now has redevelopment law which government is following but tenants are refusing to follow the law and asking for their own apartment. The government offered them "build price" of the apartment which is lower than "market price" and they still refused. Build price will still be more than 300k usd. And many of them are not even people who were kicked out of their houses before. They just moved in hopes of getting hand out from government in 2000s. You see those empty houses? Those people live outside of Guryong and claim ownership there. They paid 0 dollars and just claim ownership there illegally. There is a reason you barely see any people there. Most people who claim ownership live outside of village. Many koreans know this and most of Korean people do not have a favored view of Guryong village. They see them as greedy. Always, there are more to the stories than what it appears to be. We have compassion for poor and our economy is very strong enough to not to have shawnty town.
@whereisdan no problem. It is not humanitarian disaster as a lot of foreigners describe. It could have been gone if it wasn't for human greed. Sure some of them were poor people but most of us were poor to begin with. My dad used to live in country side in huts with my widow grandma raising 4 kids. Where is our compensation? My dad worked hard and sent me to the US and my family owns apartment in gangnam.
It's great that you showed for us ,two separate faces of Korea ( Gangnam and Guryong) .Everyone loves modern city Seoul but few know the truth. It's a humanitarian tragedy for people all over the world 😮😮 Thanks
easy to hate on gangnam, especially when it feels like a world apart and so separate from the rest of the city (even if it's not actually that far by transport, haha). but i miss it too, in its own way. nostalgic about the whole damn place!
Imagine you've been slummin' for 25+ years and two random waegukin come sliding through your narrow corridors (horizontally) with a video camera - "Oh hey hi, don't mind us!" hahaha
In gangnam centre i can imagine people wouldn't like it ... as it involves human interaction. But here, they're so friendly they're happy to engage in conversation :)
As a New Yorker I was shocked at how orderly the subway passengers were who were waiting, boarding and getting off the train. We didn't get to see what the actual ride was like but I'm betting it was nothing like our subway system rides are here in NYC. I have developed subway envy for the Korean subway system.
"담은 술, 담근 술" means home made. how much alcohols in there? they even don't know. It's of how Korean brewery started ages ago. Ultimately 막걸리, 동동주 might be the well known public alcoholic beverages.. home made is not regulated, as you travel, hundreds of different taste of 막걸리 or 동동주 you'll confront.
