I think the person in hell can reduce their sentence if someone shares them merit, i have Heard some stories on this. It is like when gov reduces sentence of some prisoners because of good conduct. You can dilute also the Bad kamma while alive and the personal sentence in hell Will be reduced. Also by sharing merit You can help others get out of hell i feel it because some relatives got out i feel it after sharing them merit
