I have heard many versions by different singers. This equals M Hasan !
I must have heard over 20 times and have not bored….
People comparing this performance with that of the great Mehdi Hassan saab tend to forget that every great singer has their own unique style of gayaki (gharana). Even under the same gharana, the singers infuse the song with their personal style as they progress through their careers. In the beginning, it is generally about closely matching the original singer and gradually it becomes more about the current singer's personal style and less about the "matching".
Also, gharanas have such striking differences in tonality, range of voice, and use of the raag'a that sometimes people familiar with only one version of the song sung by someone from a particular gharana conclude that a different singer is "out of tune" only because he/she is singing in a different style.
On that note, I think Sam Chaurasia gharana is one of the most misunderstood gharanas by the commoners as it has a rough texture to its singing style that most of the people (who are more habituated to listening to melodious performances) cannot digest and they end up trashing the singers from this gharana. I have seen this happen to Ustaad Shafqat Salamat Ali at times too. This is very unfortunate in my opinion. Before passing on a quick judgment, we must realize the level of effort each of these singers has been putting in for decades to reach where they are today. It is also OUR duty as audiences to learn and prepare our ears to appreciate the nuances of different gharanas before we start speaking ill of a particular performance.

@@rohinikulkarni3539 Shukria. I find Ustaad jee a bit out of breath at times in some performances but his style, voice, range, depth, quirkiness - everything melts my heart. I intend to listen to his performance someday live. I feel unfortunate that another favorite musician Ustaad Ameer Ali Khan passed away during COVID pandemic. I had such intense desire to meet him! :-(
