I wouldn’t say it was a disappointment. I just wish they made it a series. There was so much to put into this movie that it suffer from a limited amount of time.
I still can’t believe it was Junior who ordered the hit. And the crazy thing is, nobody ever found out. And because Junior ended up getting dementia, he’ll likely go to his grave with that secret! Chrissy went to his grave thinking a cop killed his father, and that he had killed the man responsible. And Tony, the man himself, he went about life never knowing that his childhood hero was killed by the very man he used to play catch with!
@@TheUnreliableNarrator64 It seems Sil was a little bit suspicious when Tony said the supposed cause of Chris' death is blood suffocation. He said it while he was in bed and the guys came to visit him, after Chris and Tony carcrashed.
Should have been a mini series. The characters were great and Gandolfi’s son was perfect and had all of older Tony’s mannerisms. I wanted a longer more in depth look at a prequel, this was more of a tease
@@copperdee3073 ummm not to sure if you caught it in the video but dude narrating thought it was a nickname Bc he was second to his younger brother and it was a knock on him
Not sure who pulled the trigger but I believe Junior's motive for having Dickie killed was solely down to the fact that he didn't like to be made fun of. Season 1 of Sopranos proves a lot of this - Junior had Brendan whacked because he and Christopher were disrespecting him in the truck hijackings, he had Donnie killed because of a joke he made about Tony's mother, which Junior tells Mikey, "Next he'll be making jokes about me", and he was humiliated when Tony made open references about his sexual secrets, resulting in him to lash out against Bobbi Sanfillipo.
Maybe when he died he had Tony’s mums medication on him the pills and I recon he was found with the pills on him when they found him dead maybe that’s why Christopher called him a junkie just a theroy
It was known that Gandolfini and Chase fought a lot regarding scripts, charaterizations, and story continuity, which made the series better for it. I wonder if Gandolfini would have fought Chase over the choices he made for Many Saints. Look what happened when no one was there to question and second guess George Lucas!
The choice of actors was bad expect Johnny & tony soprano plus Joey Diaz. I don’t think he ( the main actor) could carry the role as Dickie or be believable he had no charisma as leading man or convincing as a killer. Nobody was ever gonna lace up the boots of Paulie and junior though whoever they choose as actors.
@@santinorocco497 I want Jonny Soprano series now with John Bernthal as the lead. I was excited seeing him in Saints but he didnt get much time with the character.
You're a liar. It was never known that Gandolfini and Chase fought over scripts. There were absolutely NO changes to the scripts. Other than Tony Sirico telling them he'll never play a rat. And change a line where his character called a bully, to a psycho. He refused to play a rat or a Bully. Outside of that, there were absolutely NO changes to the scripts. Dozens of cast members (INCLUDING Gandolfini) and crew have verified that information in several interviews. Why would you assume something and post it without fact checking it first?? That to me is the same as a lie.
I thought Paulie was the voice as well. Until I saw Jilly Ruffalo listed in the credits played by Ed Marinaro. Which led me to investigate in what scenes I missed him. Until I found out the scene was cut from the film. The original scene was Junior giving the hit to Jilly to carry out. I’ve watched interviews with actor Ed Marinaro and it is indeed his voice that is heard over the phone saying “it’s done”. So I believe Jilly had Barry Haydue carry out the hit. Exactly how Tony explains it to Christopher.
Anyone else notice when Dickie was talking with the Cop at the Riot he laughs and the Cop says “you think this is funny?” And then Dickie gets killed for laughing at and making fun of Junior all the time? Now think about how Tony told Chris that a newly retired cop killed his dad and Chris ends up killing him…. I feel like that’s David Chase’s subtle way of telling us who pulled the trigger at the end.
@@avega2792 It is! But I just thought that scene stuck out to me. The cop is even on the younger side and would most likely be retiring 30+ years later. I just thought the laugh in that scene was a bit odd considering he’s watching his city burn down.
@@superpokebros7898 yeah but Dickie would like to see the city burn. Don’t forget the ideas of loyalty, community and family are all facades in the mob. While they might say they care about the community, they ultimately benefit from the criminal attention being diverted to the blacks. I think that’s why Dickie laughs. He’s also pretty racist so I’m sure he was just looking down on them.
Why hasn’t anyone brought up Bobby’s dad, he was a hit man for junior back in the day. He even wears the same hat….. As tony describes him “the terminator”… Say what you want though about the movie, chase has brought us all together again.
This also would explain why Paulie sometimes acted jealous of the relationship between tony and Christopher . Maybe paulie thought Jr would take him under his wing after dickie died ? But instead Jr took tony under his wing the same way dickie did . Then later on Tony took christopher under his wing making paulie and tony's relationship a little estranged . As tony grew in power , chris was being groomed to be the underboss who tony only gave his orders through .
This is one of those films where the ending makes you want to watch it over again. Then when you do, it all makes sense. This was definitely in line with Juniors character. The revelation of Dickie being killed on his orders is also in line with the many layers, and layers of lies and misinformation that this group of characters plant, then let fester and grow through the years. The film was well done and it keeps true to the Soprano's lore.
For real, I couldnt even finish it. It was such low grade trash, especially being a Sopranos movie I at least expected something half decent but what a complete disapointment, I mean if it wasnt for the fact it was a Sopranos prequel I dont know if it even gets made or released. Thats why Im here, I was curious how it ended because it wasnt watchable.
I agree.. a true Soprano fan (in my opinion) will read understand this GREAT movie.. it’s deeper than what is displayed.. you really have to sit there & think past what you’re seeing for a lot of things to make sense.. I believe they did an outstanding job.. my husband felt the same way at first when he watched it, but after I explained to him a few things he sat back & watched it again paying CLOSE attention, & now he loves it just as much as I do.. it may seem mediocre to the eye (in comparison to someone who has never seen the Sopranos, & they decide to watch this movie for the first time, not having any knowledge of all of the “backstory” or events that previously happened, but in actuality the events in the Sopranos were all the aftermath to this movie) it’s fucking GENIUS!
If Christopher found out it was junior who killed his father, pretty sure Christopher wouldve killed junior for sure and honestly junior was the antagonist of the entire series
Chris would never be able to kill June. In Season 1 June was the most powerful Capo in DiMeo crime family and later the Boss. Past Season 1 he was protected by Tony, Bobby and the FBI who were spying on him.
I think the reason they had junior kill dickie was because of the way he went out in the sopranos. David chase himself was upset people were looking up to the cast and in season 6 he showed them how terrible these people really were. However for junior people sympathized with him and dementia. However they’re going back and showing that junior himself deserves no sympathy as he is also a cruel person
Junior falling and Dickie laughing was the last straw for Junior. If you watch the movie, there are several instances where Dickie teases Junior, or others tease Junior and Dickie legitimizes that teasing (the bar scene when Junior's goomar doesn't show up, and gets teased that she is cheating on him). Then when Johnny Boy gets out of prison, Johnny Boy states to Junior, "Why can't you be more like Dickie"...all of these assertions anger Junior, but the last straw is when Junior falls and Dickie is laughing at him. These are subtle clues as to how Junior takes everything so seriously and doesn't like being teased.
I think it was perfectly in-character for him. Hell, he has a guy killed in S2 I think randomly just for *thinking* he might talk shit about him behind his back.
the trauma probably brought that on. single mother of a young child, husband killed right before christmas. she probably drank to cope with depression. christopher once mentioned that the kitchen floors were always dirty like his mom neglected house work. plus she never remarried.
@@LiogCeartas The Moltisanti family story is fucked up all through ... I believe that in the end Dickie wanted to talk to Tony to tell him he should do something different after his uncle in prison told him to better leave that boy alone. Tony was throwing out the Speakerbox which was stolen and said "I want nothing to do with THAT SHIT" ... I really believe that Dickies death was the cherry on the top that led Tony to who he is in The Sopranos. All just because of Junior freaking Soprano...
It would have been great if they explained why in the movie this was a golden opportunity to really tell the backstories of many of the beloved cast we watched throughout the Sopranos. Imagine a younger Ralph Cifereto Richie Aprele Sr Fitch Lamona even Tony blundeto. The blue print was there sadly it was disregarded for a thrill of the week Black lives matter PC agenda fest. Imo I feel it's a huge tr a gedy for all old and new Sopranos fans alike.
In the series Tony has a deep love for Junior, a love of family. But Tony had a deeper love and awe of Dickey. Dickey brought him up and schooled him according to the series. There’s no way Tony would have had those feelings for Junior if he knew Junior was involved in Dickey’s death. According to the series, Dickey definitely took out Jilly Ruffalino’s eye because Chis admit’s he always heard it all about Dickey taking out someone’s eye. The only thing that can make it all tie up is Junior hired Jilly to kill Dickey cuz he knew Jilly had a beef with him. Jilly subcontracted the hit out to Barry Haydoo. Tony never knew Junior’s involvement.
I think youre wrong about Dickie steering Tony away from the mob. He was ready to bring him in with the speakers and only decides to step away from Tony after his Uncle advised him to. By the end Silvio had convinced Dickie to meet Tony and its implied that hes going to bring him into the life. Im not sure why people keep saying Dickie was steering Tony away from the life when the movie clearly shows the opposite
To be fair, Silvio does bring up the point that Tony could be bigger than any of them outside of the Mafia. It can be stated that Dickie was going to continue to mentor Tony but to try to steer him away from criminality and to continue his "good deeds."
ehh I personally think he was gonna tell him to stay out of the mob. Everything about the last few scenes suggest that Dickie is filled with regret about his life.
Yeah. He was unsure about it the entire time because he wanted the best for Tony and tried to keep him out for a bit but he was also hoping for Tony to come in
This is the best mediocre movie I’ve ever seen. Perplexing. Wasn’t totally disappointed, and yet definitely wasn’t blown away. Great acting, interesting characters, some cool action sequences, deeper themes of family, loyalty & betrayal… and yet the sum is LESS than it’s parts. Disjointed? Lacks flow? No focus? Yes, yes & yes. I want “Many Saints” as a series, taking a deeper dive into these plot lines which never quite come together (despite the finality of the ending). While I give the movie an overall thumbs-up, I can’t fully recommend this movie to anyone other than hardcore Sopranos fans like myself.
I had the same feeling at the end of the film. Where the Sopranos series dug DEEP, Saints seems to only scratch the surface. A 10 part series would have served Saints much better. And of course the way it’s shot never once do we feel like we’re watching the Sopranos. Should we have? Not sure but it could have easily been an unrelated movie with different characters.
Agree 100%. Uncle Junior was simply riding on Johnny Boy Soprano's coattails and no one really respected Junior. I always considered Uncle Junior as the male version of Tony's mother, Livia Soprano (a pessimistic, pain in the bum). Dickie Moltisanti was regarded as a heroic and highly influential figure among the DiMeo family. Should Johnny Boy Soprano been killed, "Eckley" DiMeo, would've grown very tired of Junior Soprano and had him taken out and promoted Dickie Moltisanti. You don't think Uncle Junior knew this? Fastforward: Tony has the support to take over the family after Aprile's death, but fears Junior will start a war if he is not named boss and the family didn't need the attention of law enforcement attention.
Nobody noticed that the retired cop said that he "didn't kill him" before Chris even said he was dead. The retired cop was the triggerman. Paulie is from Johnny's crew and not an hitman. Junior outsourced, like a well-bred gangster would
@@theportugueselegend lol what guy was too young? the blurry man with no discernible features? They had a one year old play a three year old Christopher so there goes that argument.
Also worth noting that in the beginning Dickie tells Harold off about being punked by a much younger person similar to how Johnny Soprano reprimands Jr about Dickie Moltisannti being younger and more successful. Both Harold and Jr would go on to murder the person that was giving them problems.
My theory is that people just started talking mad smack after Dickie died. It probably started as a rumor because they found the psych meds which were destined for Tony's mother in Dickies pocket. Just look at the Sopranos and how often after a character is killed or otherwise indisposed of they are suddenly spoken very ill of.
My theory is maybe he did it after the war, or maybe his wife told Chris something that no one knew, and he kicked the habit, the great thing about the sopranos is the secrets we don’t know about and what not, but the most likely is Chris thinking/believing addiction is a disease and could possibly be hereditary
@@jak3yp he didn't at all, he only did booze frequently. The movie lefts clear it was gossip started by Livia, ironically due to a drug that was meant to be given to her. The rest is just speculation.
@@mao2se I respect it but Livia could’ve started it but how did it get to Chris like that, I mean his wife would’ve known better, and Tony defended Dickie like no other, there was too many people to dispute that nasty claim especially when they ALL know how Livia is .. idk
The whole movie feels like a best of compilation, of a season of a good show, cut in a way where nothing pays off and nothings fleshed out. Its a really bizarre case of a good story told the wrong way.
@@joemonteirosportsshorts3343 I didn't catch that part, tbh I was drifting in and out that whole thing with the Italian girl dickies dad's girl was borring I wanted more drugs and death lol
Wouldn’t call it a huge disappointment, I did however wish the movie was longer to give more development to many of its characters, especially the relationship between dickie and his father. The killing seemed very rushed with no real reason. I’m my honest opinion it was pretty good, I’m hoping the next movie, assuming there will be one can carry the imperfections of this one. I also would imagine it to be based around Tony and his uprising. Many Saints did feel like a bunch of clips from a show, I really think this could have been a great short series.
It was Junior being jealous about being in the younger and less experienced Dickie's shadow Dickie laughing at him when he fell down the stairs was the final nail in the coffin.
Yeah most likely. Bobby Sr was his right hand man and he trusted him. Had other people found out Junior would have been dead. So it had to be a guy he trusted to keep his secret.
"It's Done.." That's a line that Paulie said numerous times throughout the series. Ok, so Paulie was the shooter of Dickie following the orders of Junior" -- Now... Who was Paulie's biological father? - His biological mother (his Aunt, the Nun) on her death bed told him she was knocked up by a Sailor from WWII.... Dickie was a sailor from WWII... Paulie not knowingly killed his own father which made Paulie and Christopher Half Brothers!!! - Thus the unknowing animosity... BOOM!!! =p
@@DaxSports1 totally agreed. Made no sense to me at all. And to a person who not just likes Sopranos but absolutely adores it it was pretty insulting even.
@@arshoohanyan754 I wouldn't say i was insulted, but at first i was quite confused. I finally figured out a lot of what they were trying to show us, but, they needed more time, less comedy, too many plotlines. 2 is plenty for just a 2 hour movie. They should have either made it a mini series or maybe cut it into 2 movies, with like a part 1 and a part 2
I distinctly remember a scene in the Soapranos where Paulie asks Silvio "what time did Chris's father die?" And Silvio says "I don't know, you were there" implying that Paulie killed Chris's father.
I feel like Newark would make a fantastic prequel series, showing Johnny boy getting worn down, Jackie A rising threw the ranks and tony not having the makings of a varsity athlete
If Chase is going to produce more of this, he should film Dominic Chianese in a wheelchair/hospital bed when Junior starts passing away (about a year after the show), with Nivola’s Dickey suddenly appearing and staring him down as he dies.
MSON really helps you reset your view of The Sopranos. Dickie never “saw it coming” as Bobby stated in Home Movies. Young Tony didn’t see Dickie coming to Holsten’s in the last scene and older Tony never saw it coming at Holsten’s in The Sopranos. Tony was whacked.
You really think a black guy who barely qualifies as an associate "clapping back" to a made man in front of all his friends would have went down that way?
@@NeoNyder Lol no one cared about that till it was consequences. The Sopranos had flash backs of Tony running from black kids trying to beat him up during his father's time as capo and let's not forget what happened to Chris and Bobby with zero retaliation afterwards.
@@NeoNyder the debate wasnt what would have or should have gone down..it was who started it. Grimm is right Paulie started it. Some people stand up for themselves no matter who you are. Especially if youre in the crime game.
The idea of Junior taking over Dickie's operations is interesting. Couple things though. 1. The movie leaves the structure of the family pretty ambiguous. DiMeo is still the boss, but a minor character. It's plausible to read Dickie as capo of a major crew. But for most of the movie, the crews aren't clearly defined and Johnny, Dickie and Junior just seem to vaguely outrank everyone else, even if Johnny and Dickie are more respected. 2. The show clearly establishes Junior as having a number of soldiers his own age in addition to some muscle Tony's age or younger: Beppy, Murf Lupo, Bobby Sr. and Tommy. Some of the old guys still kick up to Junior in the loony bin after he shoots Tony. So it would stand to reason he already had some supporters in the family by the time of Many Saints.
I wouldnt exactly say that the name Junior makes him inferior. Carmine Persico was called Junior too and he was definitely a very feared boss of the Colombo family
Dickie killed the twin, Jr found out n killed him ; the joke Dickie made about Jr was only icing on the cake ; joey diaz was the life of the movie plus John bernthal was good
Sequel will definitely be about the night Tony and Jackie robbed Feech's card game ,and when Tony S and Tony B where gonna do a big job, but Tony S wasn't there because he had a panic attack and Tony B was pinched instead.
I dont think junior had a problem with getting it up, his back was hurting. Plus you mentioned events in the movie being the reason why he got so upset with tony joking about his oral sex with his girlfriend but david chase hadnt written or even planned many saints of newark at that point so that cant be it. It was a thing in the mafia that men dont give head.
Chase might not've planned Many Saints at that point, but, when he was creating the characters, I'd bet that little details like that (even if he hadn't figured out the 'how or why') would've been known to him as part of that creative process ^_^
I don’t get how we get Tony and dickey were like Chris and Tony. In the movie dickey spends very little time with Tony. Plus he dies when Tony is still years younger than what Chris was when he was working with Tony
I went to the flix to watch the movie. I loved it. A point no one seems to mention is that the day Tony went to the diner to meet dickie. The diner was actually the diner at the end of the series. Wow 👏
Tony told Chris what he knew, and what he knew was true, Jilly did order the hit, and that's him on the phone saying, its done to junior, and most likely that was the cop that shot him, so it was true to Tony's knowledge, he just never knew that his uncle ordered Jilly to get it done,
The only thing this movie showed to me that there’s still a high demand for “All Things Sopranos”. Hopefully this movie shows there’s a huge demand and David Chase gives us more. Going to the movie I was disappointed to not see the Old Man and actual boss of the family(unless I missed it). No Ray Curto who was one of the oldest copos. Where was Feech? Where was a young Ralph, Larry Boy? Richie? I wanted to see the Soprano family members of that era. Hopefully they continue with Tony’s rise through the family so we can at least see the card game heist and who really saved them. Was it Richie, Johnny Boy, or both. My guess would be Tony’s Dad considering who he was, but Richie around that time was a Capo and a force so who knows. I liked the movie but was left with too many questions. I thought Sil and Tony was childhood friends and ran in a crew with Jackie, Tony, and Ralph growing up? On the movie it makes it seems like Sil was much older. It was established that Puss and Paulie was older already. Idk 🤷🏾♂️, been holding that rant in for awhile, just hoping this movies showed the public still craves Soprano content and they give us more of it!
Had to see it twice, old man DiMeo appears only a few seconds at Hollywood Dick´s funeral played by David Chase himself. I was also expecting to see other family members like Freddy Anastacia, Curto, Barese, etc.
It's the world of make believe. It was a GREAT show. The best ever. Why in hell would anybody give a rat's ass about any of the shit you mentioned here? The card game heist and who saved them. Who CARES? The Soprano's is over. It's history. In the rear view mirror. The movie was CRAP and more of the same will be just that ... more crap. LET IT GO. For Chrissake we still have idiots on You Tube arguing about why the Beatles broke up. WHO CARES?! Let it go and move on. JFHC.
Excellent synopsis and more importantly a wonderful interpretation of Junior’s character and motivation. On his gravestone would be the phrase insecurity with overcompensation are the root of evil deeds.
Killing Dickie might be the best thing that Junior ever did, even if it was out of spite. Dicky was a horrible person, who killed people close to him when he got angry. Maybe Dickie would have gotten Tony away from the mob life, and he didn't because he was killed, but even if he did that he would still of been awful. Christopher went to hell, not because of Tony, but because of himself. Maybe Tony goes to hell, because of Junior
I kind of liked it but like many here, I feel this needed more time to expand into the characters. Ray Liotta (whom I like a lot) didn't make much sense a s a character, didn't see the point of that storyline. Same as the italian wife. Harold surviving that war at that time is just not realistic. That's crew would have been dealt with swiftly much earlier. And anyway these "minor" groups tended to be associated, not rival. Not much on Paulie, Silvio was a caricature. This needs another prequel to explain how Tony eventually grew into the ranks.
@@MikeB-rb7nk To redeem the shortcomings of the first film in a beloved franchise. It wasn’t a BAD film but I felt it didn’t dig deep enough and it violated the #1 rule of good storytelling. The viewer needs to have emotional vested interest to the characters. I’d like to see a second film but only if it was superior to the first. A second mediocre film would make Chase look like a total hack.
Harold wasn't even directly in Jersey, Dickie had to locate him for one. Second look what happened when Dickie simply drove through the black neighborhood earlier in the film, he got f**** up and almost lost his car to regular angry people. Lastly you are delusionally fantasizing about the mob's power they lost entire cities to "minor groups" after the Rico's and they never had full control before. Most gangs date back to the fifties and late sixties and they had no ties to the mob, big cities during these times were WARZONES people weren't sucking off the mob how you imagine. On top of that they were infighting constantly Dickie getting killed by Junior before retaliating against Harold was very realistic.
Junior was a made guy he would never be jealous of Dickey But junior has a chip on his shoulder and does not take to disrespect very Well when it's repeated even by a good Employee After all dickie was just an associate Even his father wasn't made
I began to suspect junior halfway through the film bc of the increasingly dirty looks he gives Dickie, but the second he yelled Dickie's name out to his Mistress I KNEW exactly how it would end. Movie was ok but it was disjointed and never really had a plot or told a story. It's like the movie had no point. It's only saved bc of the fan service which could have been done even more. Anybody else find the similarities in looks between a younger Livia and the adult Carmela to be really creepy? Tony married a woman that looks exactly like his mother...ugh lol Also, was the blind baseball team complete bs or did he really coach that team? Felt ambiguous to me whether it was real or not but maybe I missed something?
Timeline didnt ad up. In the sopranos Christopher tells adriana how his father talked to him about italians in music, frankie valli, sinatra ect. But in the movie dickie dies when chistopher is still just a baby
My wife noticed that, about livia looking a lot like Carm. Its pretty common men look someone like their mother in another woman. Some shit in the subconcious or shit like that lol 🤣
It took awhile but I found the Easter Egg. It was the episode when Junior was telling Tony who to use to kill Johnny Sack. It was on of those Men from Rhode Island that Junior used to kill Dickie.
I liked it. I went into thinking not to look at it being better then it's predecessor. Nobody will ever top James Gandolfini as being one of tv's most iconic characters.
I liked the movie. I came in with reasonable expectations. I didn't expect it to compete with the show. I feel movie goers today are very spoiled by things like the mcu and dceu just giving into the masses. I wanted a story about Dickie Moltisanti and that's what I got. I didn't go in trying to validate some bullshit theory from the show. I didn't go in expecting it to be like the show, because it's a movie. I didn't didn't go in expecting to see much Tony because Chase said early on what it was. You see it with people's reaction to other things that have YEARS of lore it built on that Hollywood takes a swing at. Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil currently. I don't understand how people expect a film to include all of the lore within 2 hours when the show/source material can't even do that in such time. Idk what the disappointed fans were expecting. I wouldn't want to watch a movie with some checklist. I just wanted back into the world... and well... Just when I thought I was out... they PULL me back in!
All I can say was that those 2hours absolutely flew in. I could have watched this for 6 hours & not once checked my watch or looked at my phone, it was nice to back in that world after so long
@CJWAll, that’s a solid post. Most of the bad reviews are from die hard fans that wanted Season 8 of the series. I feel there were too many fan service moments. How many times does JR have to say “ya sista’s cunt!’? And still says it 40 years later, and “what a blow”. We get it. That’s JR Soprano. What COULD have been done was more thematic development on why in God’s name JR would whack Dickie. Yes, Jr was a very jealous, insecure, petty person. But...a little more development? I guess that would have taken the shock value out if the phone booth scene. Sil’s physical mannerisms were great. His voice? Cartoonish. I really liked the Dickie character, and that actor was superb. Think of the whole thing as Chrissy’s screenplay he’s reading to us...from hell!!! And if you look close at the trigger man, he’s wearing a Member’s Only jacket!
It baffles me that people disliked junior having Dickie killed. I highly doubt it was just for him being made fun of. The whole essence of sopranos is that you don’t truly understand the characters’ emotions or motivations. Throughout the whole film, you think Dickie will be killed due to the rival black gang, but it turns out it’s for a supposedly stupid and petty reason from Junior. That really felt like a David Chase moment, to have this larger than life character removed for reasons we don’t fully understand.
There were elements of the movie I didn't like, but Dickie getting killed at Junior's behest is a perfectly Sopranos trajectory. All along, the series sets up characters for some operatic arc, only for them to get killed for stupid, petty reasons that make no sense. You think you know how a guy is going to die in some tit for tat, but then he slips on a bar of soap and breaks his neck. Which is fitting, because these are mobsters. They get into the rackets because they want the easy way out in life--hanging out in strip clubs all day, wearing track suits, quipping about old movies--and they end up tripping over other gangsters who are equally lazy, stupid, petulant, spiteful, and jealous. When they do finally get together on some score, they end up stealing from each other, or stepping in each other's toes and screwing it all up.
"A David Chase moment," people fail to realize how much of an influence Terrence Winters (among others) played on The Sopranos.. There's a good reason why David Chase worked in anonymity prior to Sopranos-and did virtually nothing afterwards aside a B movie (cause his life goal was to be a filmmaker) 🥴 This whole entire plot makes absolutely no logical sense whatsoever: There isn't a shot in hell Johnny Boy would tolerate this, besides Johnny being a huge earner and a legend (and a member of their crew) he was a close friend; we're also expected to believe Junior is this petty-bitter-angry-old man (at 40yrs old & higher up than Dickie) who's gonna murder this guy for laughing at him?? The same guy we've seen act on logic/common sense and use his wits to make decisive decisions, Tony's second consigliere and the Don Vito to his Michael Corleone (until the dementia)... This whole story wouldn't of even held up, they'd of killed this "Jilly Ruffalo" literally days within finding out who pulled the trigger (some jerk off beat cop at the time-not a detective with pull), and if this other made guy was implicated he'd of fervently denied any involvement.. We also know for a fact it was Jilly, as "Jilly Ruffalo" was credited as a character in the movie 👀
@@CommanderLongJohnyou only mention the laughing part when there’s plenty of other reasons for his resentment towards dicky, mentioned in the video your commenting on lol, that was just the cherry on top. And junior literally tried having his own nephew killed even after he let him be boss… why are you acting like that’s out of his character? People don’t just get old and change their entire personality and identity 😂
I can't recall uncle Jr and Christopher ever even having a conversation during the Sopranos other saying hello to each other. Junior did request Christopher join his crew in season one only to have Tony refuse.
I instantly said it was Paulie. Remember the cat? Paulie was obsessed with the idea that the cat was Chris haunting him. He also used to punish Christopher and they had a very long rivalry.
I think the cop did kill Dickie ordered by Junior. Tony somehow found this out and has Chris kill him but have Junior a pass. I don’t think anyone but Tony knew the truth Amit Dickie’s death.
Chris is also consistently proven to be an extremely competent criminal. He's a failure at everything else, but as a criminal he's able to prove himself as just as valuable as all the top guys. It's not JUST nepotism. He's actually extremely good at earning money. It's never shown as an issue for him, even when Paulie is robbing him blind, and when he's shown in the process of committing crimes he's shown as having an exceptional ability to just cruise through it easily. Like when he does bank robberies while telling jokes, and ENJOYS robbing and getting into (and winning) a gun fight with actual Hells Angels gangsters! Even just buying some groceries he does an exquisite con with the weighing scales with such natural ease. Crime comes totally natural to him. Not even second nature, but first! He's always shown to be an extremely tenacious and even shrewd criminal. This matters. This is why you don't get anyone ever complaining that Christopher is rising fast due to Tony - they just see Chris as a competent colleague who has a very good run at being boss, having a boss as a mentor. Even Paulie doesn't complain about nepotism and he hates Chris. It's mentioned only under very specific circumstances. As a family thing.
It's kind of crazy that during The Sopranos when Tony started to recall his repressed memories from his childhood during his sessions with Dr. Melfi like watching his father chop off a man's hand. That he didn't recall or mention that his mother got prescribed those pills and that he reached out to Dickie to get those pills for him. It seemed like it would have helped him uncover his family's Mental health issues like Johnny's panic attacks, Their Mentally handicaped uncle.
It´s painfully obvious to the audience in Many Saints of Newark that whoever capped Dicky did it on Junior´s behest because Junior had a hard-on for Dickie since he fell down the church steps hurting his back and Dickie laughed at him and made sport of his injuring himself. Maybe there were other mitigating factors but the incident on the church steps was the final straw. Had that not happened Junior may have well gone on through life tolerating slights, real or imagined, suffered from Dickie Moltisanti.
I liked the movie the first time, then started defending it against people's complaints. I watched it again and loved it. There's so many parallels to the series. Also, like the show, it takes a couple of watches for things to sink in. I hope they do a sequel.
Junior being behind Dickie's assassination in Many Saints seemed kind of random to me when I saw it, but this video makes it seem more logical. I never bought the idea that the cop Christopher kills in season 4 was the man who murdered Dickie. It seems impossible that the mob would have let someone who killed a made guy live, let alone worked with him for decades after the event. I always took it to be a lie Tony told Christopher to motivate and build affinity with him. I assume Tony wanted the man dead for other reasons.
They passed up 10 years of stories when the screen faded from 8 year old to 18 year old Tony in high school. They missed out on getting to know more characters
8 years old to 14/16 years old. They didn't pass nothing, but left most of the characters to the sequel, like Ralphie, Richie, Feech, Tony Blundetto and all of New York. I never really understood why Sil was in Dickie's crew too... he should have been too young
Junior also got the manager of garden grove killed due to spreading rumors about him and Livia, and that Tony fluffs his mothers pillows, when that was actually Patsys brother than spread the latter. Junior had Tony whack a civilian over a rumor. Think of that.
The "dysentery in the ranks" line is cracking me up so much in these vids, i'm beginning to think that's the actualy word meant instead of DISSENT lmao
At the end of the movie, Harold walks out of his apartment happy as if with nothing to fear, then hands $300 to someone. Could it be Harold who set up the kill on behalf of Jr, paying the assassin the balance for his services?
Not to be racist, but won't it actually make sense if they blame Dickie's death on some African Americans like they did in the show, since Dickie already had conflict with Harold; instead on blaming it on a cop?

I think that Dickies gf is really Chris’ mom! Why else say his wife can’t have kids, and why have Junior say “I hear he’s slow with the talk”, just like the gf learning English, she’s slow to learn too!
I just watched 'The Many Saints...' last night.. Enjoyed it, although I did think it maybe would have been even better done as a mini-series, rather than a standalone movie.. Still, it was certainly very good.. and, btw, you give a great explanation here as to why Uncle Junior was behind Dickie's killing (beyond just the fact that Dickie laughed at him for falling over, as I've seen suggested - and stated as therefore simply not making any sense - on another review)... Thanks.
It was Bobby “The Terminator” Baccalieri Sr. That hat and the fact he’s the hitman. It definitely wasn’t the cop because the mafia especially back in those day and way before would never work with the police let alone talk to them.
Ya know ya could be right, because he does kinda resemble a younger baccallierii sr look about himself, instead of a sammy the bull look come to think of it.🤔

I recently heard the nature-film narrator David Attenborough referred to as a "naturist", implying that while he is filming and commenting upon lions on the Serengeti, he and his family are relaxing in the nude with a group of German and Danish tourists. David Attenborough is in fact a NATURALIST. The irony lies in his brother Richard Attenborough staring in Jurassic Park.
What was overlooked here is that Dickie killed his Father a made guy in the beginning of the movie. Junior did not kill Dickie, the DiMeo Family contracted the hit utilizing an assassin that eventually outlived their usefulness. Even if Dickie had not pledged love to the comare his Father's wife confirming assumptions were accurate, I'm sure there would still have been suspicion. Dickie was real cool, but not the sharpest cat and clearly losing his shit towards the end. Dickie was well respected and loved by many, but he killed a made guy, he had to go.
Dickie's father wasn't a made guy. Remember Chris (as the narrator) pointed this out in the beginning. He just made a lot of money so he was greatly respected.
7:50 actually, the voice really sounded like Silvio to me and Silvio used that same term and cadence throughout the show when he would report it over a pay phone to Tony..
Tony lying to Chris about who killed his father was honestly the worst thing he did you have to consider what Chrissy was going through in the time he was used for a lie it just bothered me more than a lot Tony did in the series
I don't know, I'm no expert on mob hierarchy, but wasn't Dickie a made man? Paulie worked for Dickie not Junior. They are all under the same family but for Junior to order one of Dicke's men to clip their own captain seems stupid and at the very least risky as it leaves a huge loose end. Junior would have had to have Paulie killed just to insure silence. It had to have been someone outside the family.
He actually wasnt. He was just an associate. Paulie was most likely not the triggerman, but the messenger. Paulie also didnt work for dickie in the movie, he worked for Johnny. Dickie never stepped up to the reigns even though he could have

Anyone else notice when Dickie was talking with the Cop at the Riot he laughs and the Cop says “you think this is funny?” And then Dickie gets killed for laughing at and making fun of Junior all the time? This also would explain why Paulie sometimes acted jealous of the relationship between tony and Christopher . Maybe paulie thought Jr would take him under his wing after dickie died ? As tony grew in power , chris was being groomed to be the underboss who tony only gave his orders through .
This is one of those films where the ending makes you want to watch it over again. Then when you do, it all makes sense. This was definitely in line with Juniors character. The revelation of Dickie being killed on his orders is also in line with the many layers, and layers of lies and misinformation that this group of characters plant, then let fester and grow through the years. The film was well done and it keeps true to the Soprano's lore.
Idk there are multiple blatant continuity breaks in the film
For real, I couldnt even finish it. It was such low grade trash, especially being a Sopranos movie I at least expected something half decent but what a complete disapointment, I mean if it wasnt for the fact it was a Sopranos prequel I dont know if it even gets made or released. I agree.. a true Soprano fan (in my opinion) will read understand this GREAT movie.. it’s deeper than what is displayed.. you really have to sit there & think past what you’re seeing for a lot of things to make sense..
Christopher had very little respect for “Mr. Magoo” in the first place. I believe he expressed his desire to kill Junior more than once in the series.
@The governor
Junior Varsity maybe.
Chris would never be able to kill June. In Season 1 June was the most powerful Capo in DiMeo crime family and later the Boss. Past Season 1 he was protected by Tony, Bobby and the FBI who were spying on him.
He was probably supposed to take him out in the 1st season so that's not true.
@@JonyTony2018 someone else would kill him, but he was supposed to be offed. Got saved by the FBI and that's all.

Junior slipping was funny though hahahahaha
I think it was perfectly in-character for him. Hell, he has a guy killed in S2 I think randomly just for *thinking* he might talk shit about him behind his back.
He also probably doesn’t like it that Tony looks up to Dickie more than him, his actual uncle.
Junior is for sure low-key one of the more dangerous dudes in the Sopranos Universe.

Chrissie’s addictions might still be hereditary- his mom was a drunk.

@@APOCALYPSE_X-MEN I can see that but it can also be stated that Dickie truly loved his goomar, still killed her though.

@@NeoNyder Lol no one cared about that till it was consequences. The Sopranos had flash backs of Tony running from black kids trying to beat him up during his father's time as capo and let's not forget what happened to Chris and Bobby with zero retaliation afterwards.

My estimation of Junior Soprano as a man just fucking plummeted.

Actually Olivia soprano is the one who saved Chris's life She said point blank no on Christopher
I knew THAT was coming!
The movie is a prequel so obviously events from the movie can be in the show.
Chase might not've planned Many Saints at that point, but, when he was creating the characters, I'd bet that little details like that (even if he hadn't figured out the 'how or why') would've been known to him as part of that creative process ^_^
The movie was made after those episodes though
@@namedidii yeah thats what i said
He's called "Junior" because he's Corado Soprano Jr.
I don’t get how we get Tony and dickey were like Chris and Tony. In the movie dickey spends very little time with Tony. Plus he dies when Tony is still years younger than what Chris was when he was working with Tony
I thought they were going to spend more time together. I guess Tony kept to himself this idealized image of Dickie.
“I put a guys eye out for talking to me that way”
I went to the flix to watch the movie. I loved it. A point no one seems to mention is that the day Tony went to the diner to meet dickie. The diner was actually the diner at the end of the series. Wow 👏
Really??
Yes it was Holsten's!
It was actually a good movie...I'ma a lot angry with Jr. So the movie def did it's job.
Jilly Ruffalo pulled the trigger - his name's in the credits.
no ..was it really? 🤔
Yeah you right i just checked, another one of david chase hidden(tricky) ways to show a point maybe?

Excellent synopsis and more importantly a wonderful interpretation of Junior’s character and motivation. On his gravestone would be the phrase insecurity with overcompensation are the root of evil deeds.
these people have not killed as many as the Kennedy's....
Junior's headstone should read "corrado I've always been a bitch soprano"
Killing Dickie might be the best thing that Junior ever did, even if it was out of spite. Dicky was a horrible person, who killed people close to him when he got angry. Maybe Dickie would have gotten Tony away from the mob life, and he didn't because he was killed, but even if he did that he would still of been awful. Christopher went to hell, not because of Tony, but because of himself. Maybe Tony goes to hell, because of Junior
Junior refers to Chrissy as a "loose cannon" in the beginning of the show. And I felt like that's how he felt about Dickie as well to a extent.
Dickie was a psychopath, he killed his father and didn’t flinch.
@@clarapilier Id say that killing that girl was worse. But you're right, he could kill anybody, and act like it never happened
You're not wrong about Dickie, but seriously Junior isn't much better. Dude tried to kill his own nephew.
You sound like you hated it so why would you want more?
Harold was kind of smart guy.
@@Assimilator702 maybe chase got it right the first time, can’t tell this story on the medium of film.
Tony married a woman that looks exactly like his mother...ugh lol
Also, was the blind baseball team complete bs or did he really coach that team? Felt ambiguous to me whether it was real or not but maybe I missed something?
Timeline didnt ad up. In the sopranos Christopher tells adriana how his father talked to him about italians in music, frankie valli, sinatra ect. But in the movie dickie dies when chistopher is still just a baby
My wife noticed that, about livia looking a lot like Carm. Its pretty common men look someone like their mother in another woman. Some shit in the subconcious or shit like that lol 🤣
It can be applied to women too. Looking their father in some dude. Its funny becuase its my case.
It took awhile but I found the Easter Egg. It was the episode when Junior was telling Tony who to use to kill Johnny Sack. It was on of those Men from Rhode Island that Junior used to kill Dickie.
What about Dickie having his stepmom as his goomah? Doesn't the whole crew know about this? Or this is supposed to be "normal"?
At least Junior didn't have to go to school to learn how to slip and fall! 😉 🤣😂
The movie should have been about Tony's father figures growing up
I just wanted back into the world... and well...

I thought it was what made it more interesting and the hope of a second one even better
There's a good reason why David Chase worked in anonymity prior to Sopranos-and did virtually nothing afterwards aside a B movie (cause his life goal was to be a filmmaker) 🥴
This whole entire plot makes absolutely no logical sense whatsoever: There isn't a shot in hell Johnny Boy would tolerate this, besides Johnny being a huge earner and a legend (and a member of their crew) he was a close friend; we're also expected to believe Junior is this petty-bitter-angry-old man (at 40yrs old & higher up than Dickie) who's gonna murder this guy for laughing at him??
Christopher would have been a horrible boss. Of all those guys, Silvo would have been the best replacement
next boss would have come from NYC and the Jersey mob downgraded to a junior set.
Sil shit the bed when he was made the “acting” boss after Tony got shot. He couldn’t handle the weight of the Crown.
The whole, "it's done," line at the very end sounds just like Pauly
Chris’s mom was a drunk too- so he COULD have picked it up through the genes from her side as well.
I forgot who the mom was
I think Chris’s real mom was Guiseppina. Dickie said Joanne couldn’t have kids and Guiseppina looks more like Chris.
I can't recall uncle Jr and Christopher ever even having a conversation during the Sopranos other saying hello to each other. Junior did request Christopher join his crew in season one only to have Tony refuse.
Dysentery in the ranks.
I caught it man, and it killed me when Chrissy said it.

Junior is called Junior because he is named after his father, Corrado Soprano, Sr.
I liked the movie the first time, then started defending it against people's complaints. I watched it again and loved it. There's so many parallels to the series. Also, like the show, it takes a couple of watches for things to sink in. I hope they do a sequel.
On my 2nd viewing of the film is where I noticed certain things I missed as well.

I haven't seen the movie yet but tony killing Dickie would have really been a good dramatic twist i thought thats what would happen

David Chase: You want answers? You want sequels?... Too bad! Spend another 20 years making theory videos.
7:50 actually, the voice really sounded like Silvio to me and Silvio used that same term and cadence throughout the show when he would report it over a pay phone to Tony..
David Chase killed Dickey.
