    I wonder if anyone noticed that steeldrums are the only instrument when played ,that the players seem to be enjoying just as much as the audience that is listening.

    There seems to be a lot of envy as regards Andy's music. I am a great fan and I grew up in the West Indies hearing calypso pan. Andy has brought pan into other streams of music in a dominant way. Spyro Gyra's Morning Dance, Bill Wither's Just the Two of Us and some of the offerings from Ralph MacDonald gave us glimpses of what was possible but that space was left empty for a long time. Andy has helped fill that void and others are starting to follow. He should be viewed as a trail blazer and not denigrated because he stole the emperor's clothes. The emperor was not wearing them!! Listen to him with Anita Bonan on Quaquaraquaqua and playing David Rudder's Nuff Respect and you will see he is allowing pan to stretch its legs as more than just a novelty instrument. And if you want to hear living proof that Andy is not the only one doing something wonderfully different with and for pan music check out Pan Jazz Conversations which is an excellent jazz album by Clive Alexander. Open your minds and listen to the music and forget about who was born where.

    • @lenarcher6997
      @lenarcher6997 10 років тому +4

      Paul, Andy Narrell is good, but go look up music by Liam Teague. His versatility in Jazz, Calypso, and Classical pan is light years ahead of Andy Narrell. And there are hundreds of Trinis with comparable or better skills. Your exposure is obviously limited.

    • @thelibran11

      Len Archer
      All of this is just foolish talk.I am a born Trini with an insatiable love for sweet pan music.And that goes back to my real first love...Pan Am North Stars.Then there is Despers 'Party',Catelli,Renegades..Boogsie,Bradley,'Junior' Pouchet and all the other greats...pioneers.I respect them all.But when it comes to the musicality of it all...I would listen to Andy Narrell for hours.His seasoning adds a different flavour,brings a beautiful sound,and that is because he makes the pan play music given its limitations...So then,why can't we just appreciate and stop the foolish comparisons.Andy will take pan to heights that maybe most can't!

      thelibran11 Just because we don't fear something does not mean that it isn't actually happening. I see this and all i can think is that there are HUNDREDS, maybe even THOUSANDS of black people who would kill for such a gig.

      The true music lover likes good music. It matters not where the performer is from. What Andy has isva good management team.The days of the lone wolf are gone. Admiring one performer does not descredit others.

    First learned of Andy Narrell in the late 80s. Title "The Hammer" from the album of the same name is an awesome song. In response to Paul Marshall, to say that "the Americans take somebody else's culture and do it better" is blasphemy and sacrilegious. Pan music was born in TT and nobody does it better. Frankly, I find this song too subdued and tamed. It needs a more "primitive" local sound.
