Just finished the book. There is not a lot of politics in this novel. No long discussions or rants. There are only a few slight comments about masks, vaccines or Covid. To say this book is political is overstated to me. I thought the story was good enough but it seemed to be written for the masses and had no real originality. Anyone could have written this novel. It didn't have the edge of a King novel. I did enjoy reading it though.
It might not be fair to categorize this as a "political novel", you're right. But I almost would have preferred King to make an articulate argument for his political point of view rather than the repeated, though brief, low-effort barbs & quips. I will also agree that this book "could have been written by anybody." I thought the story was fine and it came to a satisfactory conclusion, but yeah, it doesn't feel like classic King at all.
I needed a book for a bus ride, saw this in the bookstore in the town I was in and there was no interest what so ever to buy it. I've read almost every King book written. Judging by his last few books I had a feeling this was going to be King force feeding politics and I guess I was right. I'm really hoping King decides to go back to his roots because I used to be the biggest Stephen King fan.
i read Starship Troopers back in 2019. Until then I'd only seen Verhoven's anti-war adaptation. I didn't realize that Heinlein didn't write the book with the same tone as the film. I'm not an expert on Heinlein, and it's been 4 years since I read it, AND I hadn't read it with the intent to critique it later, but the impression I'm left with is that I have a lot of respect for Heinlein as a sci fi author and a thinker, but his Nationalist views were a bit much for me. I still liked most of the book though, and I look forward to reading his other stuff eventually
A curiosity-question about your shelves: Is there a system to the books showing their spine, the ones that don't and those standing up versus those lying down? My guess is that some are read and others are not. Am I on the right track? :)
honestly, you're not even close. they are vaguely alphabetical, and i mean VAGUELY. beyond that, they go up as i can make them fit. it's a super basic system.
I'm wondering myself what was the point. I've been on goodreads, storygraph and UA-cam catching everybody's opinion. The consensus seems that it does nothing for the story and is pointless material. Surprisingly, a lot of readers weren't really hyped on the Holly characters from the git-go.
A thoroughly thought-through review.
King's genre is not my thing, but this was enlightening .
Just found your channel and I am enjoying your style and content

What did you end up reading on the bus instead??
@@gronskeibooks The Haunted by Bentley Little! Which also had a little bit of politics in it at one point lol.
Comprehensive review. I just started reading Starship Troopers. Any thoughts?

@@gronskeibooks For what its worth, I read The Moon in a Harsh Mistress, and thought that was much better.

Kay does not varnish her pronouncements.

If you really like Holly as character and you can tune out the politics, you'll probably really like this book! Enjoy!
"unnamed city."
The Mr Mercedes story takes place in Cleveland. They say it many times throughout the three books.
Do they really?! I completely forgot that then. My bad
