Hale VC Slew as VCOs

  • Hale Modular’s VC Slew (now called VC Slew Limit/Lock, I think?) is a fresh and carefully-considered design that is functionally similar to the famous Serge Smooth-Stepped Generator module that exceeds its predecessor in almost every way. Not least, when “patch-programmed,” it operates as a temperature-compensated VCO suitable for audio tasks (-2.5 to +2.5v swing) that tracks over several octaves.
This isn’t meant to be a deep-dive - it’s just four VC slews (two modules), tuned to stacked major sevenths, mixed and patched to a Setonix Boing! LPG. The video demonstrates modulation of each slew at audio rates by patching in a round:
    Slew 1 modulates slew 2
    Slew 2 modulates slew 3
    Slew 3 … slew 4
    Slew 4 … slew 1
Near the end I got confused and detuned the oscillators when I meant only to attenuvert the modulation voltages. I ache with embarrassment, tá brón orm.
As they roll out, I can see myself migrating from Serge/CGS modules to their Hale counterparts. IMHO, they’re everything a modern, Serge-inspired modular system should be.
Also: no audio delay was employed to effect the stereo “ping pong” and flams you hear slowing down and picking up again. That’s all in the patching.
