The boat may be tiny but the adventures are epic! Maya and Aladino are giving us the best of the Med with an artistic flair that cannot be beat! My best to you both 😊
I recall in Newfoundland as a young man being out in boat, hauling in a cod trap with my oldest brother. Then the whales came right up alongside the boat and I was able to reach over the gunnels and pet them on their backs as they swam alongside the boat. It's something! I'll never forget.
I came across your channel while watching Sailing UMA yesterday (18 Feb 2020), and have been slowly catching up on all of your previous videos. I jumped ahead to this one to give you my biggest "THUMBS UP". I am not a sailor but would love to experience the tranquillity of solo sailing, I solo backpack now for my piece of mind, but at 73 it is probably to late in my life to take up such an adventure. I get the same calming effect from watching this sailing videos as I get from sitting on a mountain side just watching time and nature pass. THANK YOU for what you are giving me.
Well it's fantastic that you found us John! So happy that you're enjoying the channel. There are many similarities in the mindset between solo sailors and solo backpackers, so you're in good company. Thanks again! -Maya
It's nice to watch someone that actually sails. And talks about the sailing and the weather. Most people have no idea. Sailing is isometric exercises. Constant.
Archipelago is one of the most beautiful words to flow from the mouth and tongue. Such a beautiful sailing episode. I would much rather sail with you than go to any amusement park. Oh, and about those raviolis....manja! Happy Valentine's Day you lovebirds 💘💘 Speaking of birds, I got a kick out of your paper cut out wind creature showing the wind direction on your map. Sweet! 🌬

@@SailingMagicCarpet YES ! Good question! Love your hair, I cut my own hair too, a friend taught me and my sons gf is a hairdresser and offers to do now :-)
At such conditions with heavy winds and gusts, at least for my boat, which is quite similar to yours, it is much better to shift the pressure-point of the sails forward. (Think of how a surfer is steering his board by leaning the Mast forwards to provide luffing). So I would suggest to sail with reefed foresail rather then mainsail. I always was more happy to reef my sails from back to front. Find out and tell us what you are thinking about this method.
@@SailingMagicCarpet That is exactly what I mean is the wrong way, even almost every sailing instruction is recommending it. Why is your boat luffing in strong winds? Because the mainsail causes the boat to lean over to the Lee-Seite (I dont't know the english translation for it). This leaning over to Lee causes the keel to reach out to the Luv-Side. And exactly this makes your boat luffing. It turns around the keel which is situated in Luv of the boat. So, if you try to reef from back to front - as I strongly recommend - you have two important benefits: By taking away the whole mainsail the leaning-over-factor no. 1 is canceled. The boat does not lean over so much. This causes the keel not to reach out to luv so much. Your boat will go on more straightly. In addition to this, you brought your sail-pressure-point way furhter to the bow, which causes a tendency to turn the boat leewards. (like a windsurfer). And there is another extremely important benefit by my way to reef: By taking down the mainsail completely you can fix the boom midships which turns this very dangerous "enemy for every crewmember" into your best friend. It can never hit anybody and you can extremely rely on it if you have to got on deck or to the bow. If winds become stronger and stronger, you can easily reef the genua by furling it down more and more without steps safely from your cocpit. And - this is another benefit: the earliest moment, you are beginning to destroy the very important "Anströmkante" of your genua. Up to this moment it is working perfectly in best shape. Anströmkante is the german word for the most foreward edge of the foresail which reaches from masttop to bow. Sorry for my poor english, but I think you will know what i mean. Please try it out and let me know how it works on your boat.
@@Bauchfalte I agree that with strong wind the boat usually sails a more regular course if you reduce more the main sail surface than the genoa surface, through furling it. (only a little thou, because otherwise the sail looses its shape and if deeply furled is useless). However I recommend that the main sail should be anyhow
We have to get used to it more but until now the windvane comes to action during longer crossings. The autopilot is low wind or motoring Cheers Aladino
I'm probably WAY behind of your actual schedule, but the next time you get to be around this region yo9u absolutely MUST pay the island of Elba a visit.
Heard about your channel while watching an episode of Ruby Rose about the French canals. I don't follow a lot of channels but just subscribed to yours. Dear Maya and Aladino. 👍👌👏 Great video again and as always. Haha, that sweet puffing kind of a bird angel was a nice addition to your map. :-) Still no luck with fishing? As always it was a too short video ;-) (I could watch your extremely well made vids for hours). Can hardly wait to see the picturesque town respectively landscape. I wish to you always having at least 1 foot water under the keel, good but not too strong winds and warm but not too hot weather. Thanks again for making recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck health and wisdom.
This is my favorite episode. I like it better when you don't have a script to follow. You are both so interesting and I am happy for you. Also you look incredibly fit and healthy. Is it diet alone or is the boat physically challenging?

Wow!! I asked them about sailing to and in Greece but Maya did not sound too enthused.... Language barrier, one that Aladdino, I bet, does not speak and I think it's a huge task for the little boat to achieve in a season, as they are not looking to break any records. They have to rush around the nearer islands to the S of France, where they're based from, as it is and there is so much to see there anyway.

Winter in the Med is not for the faint of heart.... on a boat the size of Magic Carpet's. As you noticed weather is quirky and the temps do drop into the 30's occasionally though are mostly in the 40's-50's. Hello from Key West, Florida/ awesome camera work and excellent editing, overall, a very enjoyable video........
Maya, your videos are excellent. Well done. My mother suggests ginger for sea sickness, not sure if that would work
Chewing + swallowing slowly small pieces of fresh ginger is a traditional excellent remedy against seasickness....
Ravioli is nice with some fresh tomato sauce. Chop a few tomatoes and cook them in olive oil for 10 minutes👨🍳

It's called katabatic wind. Strong winds from land/ hills.
So when does it make sense for you to use autopilot versus the wind vane thing? They seem similar, but at some points you do the vane instead.
We have to get used to it more but until now the windvane comes to action during longer crossings. The autopilot is low wind or motoring
