Possibly born in Bristol in England around 1680, Edward Thatch (or Teach) may have served as a sailor or privateer during the War of Spanish Succession (known in America as Queen Anne's War) before turning to high seas larceny in the last 'Golden Age' of piracy.
Blackbeard's pirate career probably began in 1717 while serving as second-in-command to Captain Ben Hornigold, based in the pirate haven of Nassau in the Bahamas. Together they attacked and plundered merchant ships off the eastern seaboard of colonial America. Blackbeard later met 'gentleman pirate' Stede Bonnet, and took over command of his sloop, 'Revenge'. Blackbeard continued to terrorise the Thirteen Colonies, attacking ships bound for eastern seaports including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, the Chesapeake and Charleston.
Blackbeard then sailed to the Windward Islands, and near St.Vincent captured a French frigate, 'La Concorde', which had been converted into a slave ship. Some of the slaves joined Blackbeard's crew, the rest he put ashore. Blackbeard renamed the ship 'Queen Anne's Revenge' and fitted her with 40 guns, making her one of the most powerful ships in the area.
With 'Queen Anne's Revenge' at the head of his small pirate flotilla, Blackbeard attacked ships and settlements from Guadeloupe to the Gulf of Mexico. Spanish sailors nicknamed him 'the Great Devil', and he became the most notorious and feared pirate in the West Indies.
In 1718 Blackbeard sailed to the coast of Florida, where a Spanish treasure fleet had been wrecked three years before. Some pirates had made their fortune searching the wrecks for silver and gold, and Blackbeard's men spent several weeks diving the wrecks. But they had little success.
Next, in the most audacious move of his pirate career, Blackbeard, with four ships, blockaded the port of Charleston, capital of the British colony of South Carolina. For six days he stopped all ships entering or leaving the harbour, plundered them, and took their passengers and crew hostage to be ransomed back to the town.
Moving up the east coast of America looking for a hideaway, Blackbeard's flagship 'Queen Anne's Revenge' ran aground entering a shallow inlet, and sank. By now Blackbeard's crew was over-large and unruly, and some speculate that Blackbeard sank his ship on purpose, to disband his crew and increase his own share of the plunder they were carrying. Now he marooned the most discontent of his men (they were later rescued by Stede Bonnet) and sailed in a spare sloop to Bath with 60 of his best crew. At Bath, then capital of North Carolina, they accepted a royal pardon from the governor, as part of a general pirate amnesty that had been offered by the British government.
Blackbeard was not content with civilian life, and from his new base at Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks, he soon returned to piracy, robbing two French ships out at sea. Alexander Spotswood, Lieutenant Governor of the neighbouring colony, Virginia, was outraged at the prospect of having the infamous, recidivist pirate Blackbeard operating on his doorstep. Although North Carolina was out of his jurisdiction, Spotswood organised a naval expedition to kill or capture Blackbeard. Led by Lieutenant Maynard, Royal Navy, the expedition caught Blackbeard by surprise at Ocracoke Island. In the viscous battle that followed, Blackbeard was finally overpowered and killed.
N.B. There are no precise records of most of Blackbeard's voyages or attacks. Those depicted in this video are carefully researched but intended to give an accurate impression of his exploits, rather than a precise record of exact routes or attacks. Similarly, there are no accurate contemporary images of Queen Anne's Revenge, so artistic license has been taken with a ship of similar size and type.

The fact that he was only “around” for 2 years is absolutely mind blowing
Most if not all Pirates had a rather short "career", so this is no surprise.

The legend also says that when they threw his headless body in the sea his head suddenly roared, "come on, Edward!" And his body swam around the vessel three times before it went limp and sunk.
Two interesting facts you missed was that he was 6foot 6 in a time when most men were under 6ft. In addition to being a giant physically, he had mad staring eyes and set the tips of his famous beard on fire to look even more wicked. Also he carried 4 black powder pistols which would all be loaded, once fired he would draw his cutlass since they took too long to reload in the heat of battle. Hence 4 pistols.
Most men aren’t 6 foot now too. American average is 5‘9
Very interesting maybe you can create your own videos I'm sure we would all be interested to watch.
imagine how bad the smell around him must have been when he is burning his beard
You have no idea if that’s true though so …. Carry on .
He didn't set his beard on fire, he put fuses in his beard which he lit before going into battle.

What an absolute badass. Blackbeard is one of my favorite historical figures.
It is VERY childish to praise a bandit.
Rafaela B. What's funny is that you state you're very open minded, what a load of bs
Rafaela B. Wow, what you said is a load of CRAP! It's more childish that you that you judge someone from there likings. Personally I view pirates as brave warriors. At the time England had full control of America, I mean don't you know about the civil war. You should admire them from there feats.
Galvarino. Name more badasses of world history.
Even though i agree with u, 100 years from now will people say the same about terrorists in the 2000's? Pirates were basically terrorists of the age as like terrorism today, they spread fear throughout the world, even though i am a big fan of pirates and if you are, i highly recommend watching the series Black Sails if you havent
Blackbeard needs to be made into an HBO series

Interesting Fact: Blackbeard was a very tall man, especially for the time he was born in but he wasn’t very successful. He was very scary because he braided his hair with rope, his height and weight made him a big man and since he was very scary, he would often win battles without a fight, meaning that they’d surrender and pray for peace. (He was 6’5 and 220 lbs)
When your commander tells you not to worry as the guy you are about to fight is so big that you can’t miss him, it’s not a good feeling.
Height and Weight that reminded me of the Marshall D. Teach
Also as the name suggests, he had a large black beard. This also added to his scary look because nobody in Europe or in European colonies grew beards in the early 1700s, only men that didn't shave were mentally insane.

compare that to: ": The 1990 Yugoslav wars after which he found himself unemployed with tons of machineguns ammo and grenades and went for sweden and France to sell these arms to muslim radicals"..
or.."The Ukraine- rusian wars of 2020 after which he found himself unemployed with tons of shoulder held AntiTank missiles and anti aircraft missiles and went to muslim radical hell holes such as Afghanistan and Mali and Nigeria and sold all these passenger aircraft kill instruments for cheap boose and hookers"...

Did the guy say that there is NO record of Blackbeard killing any of his victims? That’s insane!
In 2007, my wife and I was on cruise with RCCL and had a day at CocoCay Island. We went away from all the people and suddenly, behind goblins and thornbushes, I discovered 5-6 graves with marble stones on. We managed to get into the graveyard, and on one of the stones, it stood - almost invisible - Captain Blackbeard. When I got home to Norway, I contacted US authorities, but I didn't hear more.
In 2014, we had the same cruise. When we found this graveyard, it was totally "destroyed" with a stone of concrete telling that this is the grave of Blackbeard.
You can watch pictures of the original stone, by searching the Internet. I am so sorry that the old stone has been taken away, but I can understand that many would have tried to steal a part of the stone as a souvenir.
wouldnt it just be a memorial, doubt it actually had a body
Can I get your email address?
Cos I'd luv to hear more of your cruise trips more especially the Blackbeard one

Would love to see more content of this era and or more pirates from history. A mini series like your Napoleonic wars series would be just amazing!
One Piece has peaked an interest in me in pirates. The way they just took things into their own hands and risked it all for a mere chance to shake up the world is so cool. Some even succeeded to an impressive degree. That’s the best part.
Most just wanted money
@@ancientragerv2561 I would say so as well, but I don’t think that’s the only reason. Some were just young men who didn’t want to be hunkered down by the monotony of normal life and were seeking adventure. Others wanted to leave a legacy. I think the ambition to leave a legacy is what makes the pirate life so romantic to us today. Sure they wanted money, but they also knew it would come at the cost of never being able to live a “normal” life ever again. They knew if they were good enough at being a pirate, they would be wanted across the world.
There was a book that my brother read, basically said "Pirates were the hipsters of their day". Because life was all about seafaring in that day, they were just going against the societal norm for their own gain. And think about it, allot of these men served as privateers originally, that's just legal piracy against ships from other countries England was at war with. So pirates just thought, if we're gonna do this we might as well go all in and plunder everything, make a fortune and become infamous.
your naturally talented voice plus the music make your better than professional. Do you do narration and voice acting as a living. You are really good at what you do.
Charles Nove is the narrator, and yes, he's a professional voice over artist.
What, no mention of Edward Kenway? Shame on you, Epic History TV. XP

Cherif Tekouk Nope he wasn't, he's a fictional character
"I can think of at least three lies she must have told you to bring this about. First, I imagine she told you I retired from a prosperous trade to settle with her, what she likely did not mention is that trade was high seas Piracy. Second she told you that my name was Drummond, but when I plied that trade it was called: Teach. Third, she clearly led you to believe that you could point your sword in my direction and survive the experience. This too was something less than the truth."

he instilled fear with his appearance, making himself look demon like. pirates generally wanted people to surrender so this was his tactic of choice :)

Okay...I just watched "Our Flag Means Death" on HBOMax and when this video mentions Stede Bonnet I just about s**t myself lol. I had no idea that entire series was based off a true story
Dude, he captured 15 ships in 3 weeks, after he stole stede bonnet ship, he captured a french slave ship and turned it to a war machine... 450 crew members...
Damn what a legend.
Oh snap! BlackBeard was real? I always heard stories of him from my great grandfather when I was around 5 years old. Never knew he was a real pirate that commanded the great Queen Ann's Revenge Ship. The ships were always my favorite things to hear about.
Yup, and his ship was believed to have originally been a merchant/slave ship
Fun fact: Blackbeard and Whitebeard were confirmed by Oda to be based by Edward Thatch; Blackbeard. By this we can see that Blackbeard will eventually be luffy's last enemy.
Okay bye, I seriously just went here for One piece reference lol
Luffy probably gonna end up making a deal with the world government to bring blackbeard down, with all the devil fruit powers his gaining I can see another war happening to take him down
