This makes me so happy to see (and paint)! My Croatian American mother always made a bûche de Noël for Christmas Eve dessert. When she was a new wife with no cooking skills in the early 60s, a neighbour from France taught my mum how to cook. My mum died in 2020 but now her granddaughter has taken over the yule log creating, complete with meringue mushrooms. I think I'll paint this log for my daughter's Christmas card this year. Thank you, Harriet!
This is wonderful and brings back memories. The Yule log as I've known it was always the treat after Christmas dinner. I've made it once and must say I think my painting is turning out better. Enjoyed painting this delicious Christmas treat. Thank you. 💗🌲💗🌲💗
I was thrilled when I saw this under the door! The little toadstools have to be my favourite part- they were so cute and the shadows made them come alive! I plan to bake gingerbread this year. It will be my first time, so fingers crossed. Although I’m most looking forward to the decorating part! Thank you Harriet ❤
When life imitates art... I made chocolate log for the tearoom I manage today! I am happy to see the toadstools. I try to incorporate them into as many advent pieces as I can!
Dear Harriet, I am loving following along on the Advent calendar this year - my second. I open the calendar first thing in the morning, and think about it for the day while going about my day. Then, in the evening, I sit down with a cup of tea or hot chocolate and paint away. We enjoy a buche de noel for Christmas every year. It's become a family favourite. I'm looking forward to painting one this evening. It has few calories! Painting from Vancouver Island, BC. Thank you
After you asking i too was curious about the name swiss roll. Its not a recipe from Switzerland at all, but does originate from central Europe. The first written recipe was in 1872 in America and its called a jelly roll there (and still to this day I believe) This specific recipe was based on an older English version. From what I can gather, when it was re written in England in the same year it was called a Swiss roll, and its thought the name was to make it sound more exotic - whether thats because some Americans re named it as such, or the brits wanted to name it themselves Isnt clear. Loving this set of videos. I am just learning watercolour and these little paintings are excellent practice with a lovely outcome.. (tho I was a little sad my penguin looked so NOT cute where yours was adorable..lol) Thank you! Would love to see some versions of this through out the year though! halloween/seasonal/ holiday/ month themed etc might try to find some ideas for myself as the year progresses...
Hi! I only discovered Harriet via the Advent calendar in Etsy, but if you look on her UA-cam channel, she has monthly themed videos, similar to this calendar. I imagine it is A LOT of work to put a project like this together on top of all the incredible resources she already provides.
@@anarosesoley3100 oh I totally agree about the amount of work in this project, and realise doing regular ones thru the year will be quite difficult. Thanks for pointing me to Harriets other projects, I have been gradually catching up with several, and will definately incorporate some ideas into my own home grown themed 'calendars' to ensure I pick up my brush much more regularly than I have been as I've struggled along my early efforts to learn. I think leaving big gaps has hindered my learning for sure, as doing these little daily images has not been time consuming or super difficult, but they have kept my enthuasium, and practice high... Many many THANKS to you Harriet!!
I've never seen it with mushrooms before. How cute! My sister does one of these every few years. We'll go a couple of years without one, and then she forgets what a pain in the neck it is to put together, and we get a day of the house filled with the smell of chocolate and the sounds of... cursing. It tastes good, though!
I never did miniature paintings. I painting miniature painting n put them in miniature picture frames. I make spice cherry pie n shoo fly pie. My mother's side of family are quakers. I make snickerdoodle cookies n jelly crescent cookies. Oh I make my pumpkin cheese cake each year.
I really struggled with drawing this one since I don’t have much drawing experience. I also don’t happen to have any of my drafting tools to help with the perspective since I’m out of state.
This might be a dumb question but do you eat the log?? 😂 i thought the mushrooms but I'm reading people say they never seen it with mushrooms so I'm confused. I have never heard of this.

Now I am hungry for a piece of that to go with my coffee. 😋

No worries, you can always leave it and try on some separate paper
I got through it and I love it even though the perspective is a bit off. I’m using my sketchbook so luckily plenty of room for mistakes.
Yummy fun!❤
Thank you 😋
My perspective challenge? Now I'm hungry for cake.
Well done! Reward yourself with 🎂!
❤
I can’t really paint this small, Harriet!
Hey diana, you can always paint on a separate paper and do them whatever size you like, there are no rules!
This might be a dumb question but do you eat the log?? 😂 i thought the mushrooms but I'm reading people say they never seen it with mushrooms so I'm confused. I have never heard of this.
yeah it's all edible!! The mushrooms are usually meringue or marshmallow.
I’m so sad there are now ads in the middle of the tutorial.
Hi Juanita, the ads keep these tutorials free for you.
