JZ Mics Vintage 11 Mic Review / Test (Compared to AT2020, NT1, TLM102, OC818)

- Today I review a unique large diaphragm condenser mic, the JZ Mics Vintage 11 or V11. This has a huge low-end with a lot of weight to it, and has a similar low mid section to a ribbon while also offering the detail and clarity of a condenser mic. It does stuffer pretty badly from plosives, and the shock rejection is not the best, but other than that, it’s unique and really great sounding option. I also compare it to the AT2020, Rode NT1, Stellar X2 Vintage, CAD E100s, TLM102, and OC818.

DAMN BOI HE THICC
Honestly this mic sounds seriously good.
It’s a very unique sound that’s warm like a ribbon with the detail of a condenser. Not going to work for everyone in every situation but pretty rad sounding and unique.
@@Podcastage Please Review The RockVille RCM Pro! You Dont Answer You IG DM.... I Need Your Perspective Regarding.
Amazingly warm, luscious sound (PS. I really love the new time stamps and descriptions.)
Thank you for this, the best review I've ever seen of a mic. You covered everything !
I really love these reviews, I always learn a lot
After watching countless mic videos. I believe this is the one. Thank you so much for helping make my decision easier
UA-cam had been updated? That new timeline tagging is great! Works really well for this channel
Wow! Thanks for this review! Excellent mic. Another JZ model review please! 👍👍👍
Loved the sound for your voice. I may have to get a NT1 though. It is priced so nice! I loved the transparency of the TLM 102. It seemed like that is what you would sound like if we were sitting in the same room. And that Austrian Audio?? Jeeezus Horatio that is a great mic!
perfect as always. amazing job!
Refreshing to see a different sounding microphone. I could see many uses for it.
Such a thorough and honest review as always.
The particularly energetic box throw made me wonder how Cheryl’s doing these days.
It looks so cool, I was like "I need that!" and then you got to the price...
I used their much less expensive JZ J1 mic for a little while. $269, Same body, but in grey, with a bit more of a neutral character. That might be up your alley! ua-cam.com/video/AXsyzrLSYXM/v-deo.html
Once or twice per year they have a 50% off sale.
Perfect for you... Fills in the low mids nicely on your voice but without the boominess of the SM7B. Extremely detailed top without that tiny dollop of overhyped harshness on the SM7. It is kind of ribbon like in the mids. Perfect mic for higher, thinner, but not overly sibilant voices. Too bad about the funky shape... Definitely my pick of the bunch you tested on your voice. Really liked it on the acoustic too.
For its price, I'm still impressed at how that NT1 holds its own with the "bigger" bois
Yeah. That’s why the NT1 is one of my all time favorites. It’s incredible for the price.
At4040 vs lct 440 pure vs nt1 vs wa 47 jr which is best for sound quality??
Good video as always. No idea about most of the stuff but like other i think the NT-1 sounds really good for its price.
this one actualy sounds great. didn't feel good when you were checking that grill tho. great vid overall, keep up the good work!
I seriously love the tone of that mic for real though. Great video fam but stickers are missing.
Your shoot out clinched it for me. I just ordered it. I have a very sibilant voice for vo work. I currently use the Warm Audio W47 (a great mic) but it's a little too thick in the low mids for my voice. Many thanks!
Sweet sound! Wow! That JZ V11!
lmao this comment is so sweet in hindsight.
curtis later uploaded a video, calling the jz v11 his favorite mic, and this video right here probably made him aware of the mic in the first place.
love you curtis!

BRUHHHHH i love JZ microphones! their email list is incredible 💖
Do they send out production tips?
@@Podcastage they offer really good deals
I love the BH2. I have one and it is my main "pop" vocal mic
@@Podcastage yeah, they do!
Mic sounds good. In the comparison, the NT1 competed a lot!
Well done review! 👍
I really love your videos you have helped me out so much in getting into audio, please can you tell tell me the best XLR Mic under $50
Thank You
Thank you for this great review and comparison, it was really helpful in selecting a new microphone. Personally, I found the Austrian Audio the best sounding mic of all the mics in the comparison, but it was outside my budget so I got the JZ V11 instead. This mic replaces my (defective) Antelope Audio Edge Solo mic and it sounds so much better and quieter. Absolutely loving it.
Thank you for the comment. I’m really happy the mic is working out well for you. Happy recording Ferbose.
How is it going with 11? Low end is not a problem?
New sub! Love your humour! Keep it up!!
Thanks so much man. That means a lot.
Podcastage 🙏🙏
That's a serious sounding mic. The low end does work for your voice well.
Yes! I'm always looking forward to a new video from you, You are the best and very entertaining. There are two microphones I hope you will get to try:”Microtech Gefell m930” the smallest large diaphragm microphone that I know of (and a relative of Neumann) comparable to Tlm103 , And the Sennheiser E 965 - a large diagram handheld live mice with two settings for narrow or Broad sensitivity.
I almost bought a Gefell last week. HA!
@@Podcastage The M930 is amazing!
Love your videos, started out looking for a review on the Rode Podmic and since I have watched so many of your videos. In the end I will probably end up getting a Rode Procaster paired with a TC-Helicon goXLR Mini, since I think that will suit my use case really well, I'm a twitch streamer on a dual pc stream setup and the Go XLR will make my life so much easier when it comes to routing the audio between my pcs.
What do you think? Have you tried the GoXLR (yes I'm lazy I haven't searched the channel)? I've heard / read they have really good Midas pre-amps that even handles mics like Shure SM7B without any in-line preamps like Fethead / Cloudlifter?
So, we own a few JZ mics, including this one. JZ mics is basically Violet Design Microphones and the original manufacturer of Blue Microphones before they started to suck unless you were spending thousands. For everyone saying it's expensive, JZ has sales a few times a year where they have 50% off in a lot of products.
From their collection, the V11, The Amethist and the other Vintages (V67, V47) all have a very vintage-y, warm sound, but always very detailed. The Amethist is especially beautiful, and I think it's more of an all rounder than the classical inspired models.
For a more modern, open sound, someone said in the comments that the BH2 is their go-to mic and although I do agree I don't think it's as flattering on everyone like the Amethist is. The Amethist is STUPIDLY sensitive so please be aware that your room should be impeccable in order for it to shine.
JZ also had a cheaper mic (the J1) that sometimes you can still find on ebay or new in some shops. I never had confirmation of this but I belive its similar to the Violet Design Black Knight in sound character, as JZ doesn't make that many capsules and data seems similar.
In my experience honestly you cannot really go wrong with something from JZ.
Also, check out Miktek. They don't get a lot of attention but the c1 is incredible bang for buck.
My W keys are sad. I must be elite gamer. Nice Latvian mic. Hecking expensive, but i like how it sounds on your voice. Though let's get to the important part... great video, my sir!
Thank you so much Best Duck.
This might be one of the nicest mics I’ve seen
Great review!
Would you please do a review of Samson C02 mics?
Great interview as usual! Your energy seems a little lower than usual. Hope you are well. Peace and guidance brother
It would be sick if you could do a video on the MTP 550 DM and MTP 440 DM. love ur videos btw, thanks
This was very impressive. I like it better than many more expensive mics at least as well as can be determined without using it myself.
Hello I have a simple question what is the best mike
SAMSON C01U
VS
SAMSON C01U PRO
And I want to know what is the difference between them
I want to know and thank you very much❤
This the first time that I've noticed the new timestamps feature along the progress bar.
Sounded like a nice mic and great tone too, all that is needed now is a shock mount for it - their own design & manufacture or get someone else to do it for them. That is the only flaw for me.
Could you do a review of the Mic Part’s DIY stuff? They make bold claims about the viability of modifying a cheap mic to sound like a Neumann U87 or other classic mics.
Thanks for this!
I think i just found my next upgrade the MXL can't match that warm sound!
As always a great review!
pd. you sound tired, you should rest boi
Thanks bro you do an excellent job..... recently I been thinking about buying a mic, can you do a review a Alctron mc001. Thanks for the help.
To me it sounded really good and matched your voice very flatteringly. I felt the higher register sounds on the electrical guitar sounded a little shrill, though...
everyone knows that this man helped you pick out a microphone one way or another.
if you really need a shock mount for this mic you could use the shock mount for the Blue Yeti and attach the JZ V11s provided mount to it (as the Yeti's shock mount uses a standard 3/8th in screwey bit, and if im wrong just get an adapter) its not a perfect solution but ive seen it done for the beyerdynamic FOX mic and it did its job fairly well. if the vibration rejection killed the mics usefulness for anyone.
wow, the jz-11 and austrian audio.. nice.
Such expensive mics Bandrew. This one sounded really nice all around.
Sounds great for voice over! I bet a pair would be great for drum overheads. The mount was disappointing though. I'd be cool with paying a little more if it came with it's own basket style shock mount.
I wish you and mike from Booth Junkie would do a live stream and talk about microphones and setup's for people to see your both likes and dislikes would be awesome or even a weekly podcast show together.
Could you do a review for MXL 190?
I saw it on amazon, seems cool but only few information on the internet.
Very nice specs, but iso mounting not even considered, any chance that Lewitt could fit?
Can you get your hands on a Studio Projects C1 mk2? Would be a good review:)
Hi, would you recommend the NT1 over the MK4?
WOW, THE ELECTRIC GUITAR SOUNDS AMAZING
hi . FiiO A1 Silver Portable Headphone Amp A1 + Behringer HPX2000 Headphones High-Definition DJ Headphones . are they good budget combo ?
presentation...well done, thank you
It sounded a little but dark for spoken word, but for singing it really did an amazing job! Clear, detailed and natural sound with no cheap sibilance or harshness at all.
Podcastage you need to review the blue kiwi
Can you review Samson VR88 velocity ribbon mic next?
I guess the V11 isn't really trying to emulate any particular mic, but I think there's a general Neumann vibe about it. Gee, it's been out for almost a decade now and I'm hearing it for the first time here in the future. It's definitely a winner, but the mid-price condenser segment has some fierce competition. I do enjoy the bass bump, though I can see having to do a lot of high-pass filtering on recorded tracks. Thanks for the demo.
Hay podcastage,
I am one of your youtube subscribers. Could you please make a review for Audio-Technica ATM 710 hand held condenser microphone and as usual make comparison against the ones you have already reviewed.
I am really confused with its phantom power requirement that says 11-52v typical.
Does this microphone works with my audio interface Behringer u-phoria umc 202hd that provides only 48v phantom power.
I am planning to pick this microphone hoping it is more sensetive than others.please make a review for me. I have checked all over youtube and found no one who made review for it. So please be the first mover.
Thank you so much in advance.
Sir I am from India, i follow your channel very good job u r doing.. , i am struggling to find a

WHILE SINGING I FIND MY VOICE TO BE

SONGS i so I need a mic which has an
ample amount of Body in the low and
some smooth airy in the high not harsh
sounding . I have primarily shortlisted three
mics sE 2200(Transformer balanced warm
sounding), Sontronics stc 20 and lewitt

Please help me to decide a balanced and
true sounding mic with no or minimum
coloratian to the original signal

have any suggestions apart from the above
mentioned 3 mics then please feel free to give me..
One last thing do transformer balanced mics helps to get good bodied warm and balanced sounds? Thanks in Advance Gentleman..💐💐🙏🙏☺️☺️
Sounds best compared to all other mics.Love the low end punch.Btw which is the best JZ mic out there? Anybody can answered. Thanks
Every time you jump back on the JZ Mic Vintage 11 I have to check to make sure it's the same video.
That thing is GORGEOUS....quality sound but the lows are so dang prominent...I'm perplexed
Just finished .. glad you said the lows were dominant lol
Wow, I think that's my new favorite mic you've reviewed. Sounded perfect on everything.
Not the best looking mic though... Looks like a deodorant stick, lol.
Dear Bandrew, nice Video als always.
But, I think Microphone over 100$ is hard to compare on a youtube video.
The divergence are so small that I can not hear any big divergence on the competitors.
Would be nice if you test some low-budget Mics < 100$ ore better < 50$ agn.
I am sure with low expensive Mic tests you will reach more viewers.
Best Regards from Bavaria
Martin
Hey Bandrew! Great review. Few unrelated questions - When you receive a mic from a vendor for the sake of review, do you get to keep it? If so, what do you end up doing with them all? If you could give a ballpark number to the amount of microphones you currently own, what would that be? Genuinely curious.
In most cases when someone recieves a sample for review they either have to send it back or they have the option to buy it. Especially with higher priced stuff. In some cases you get to keep the item depending on the circumstances. Like maybe if its a paid review, they have a say in what you publish or possibly if the review requires taking the item apart or destroying it. And sometimes it will simply depend on the company and how much they value your review. My guess would be in his case he has the option to buy them possibly at a lower price. Also keep in mind some companies use these as "review samples" and will send them out to multiple people. As in you review it, send it back and they send it to another reviewer.
A lot of times you will see independant and unbiased reviewers buy most of their product because they are also testing the quality control of actual shipped consumer products. They don't want a cherry picked sample from the manufacturer that might be better than what you can actually buy. And this way the company has no say in what you publish about their product since you bought it. One thing you can do if the company is sending you products and you don't like it is simply refuse to publish the review rather than say something bad about it. This is why a lot of reviewer always have good things to say about products. They simply dont' talk about the stuff that was bad.
Paul Mohr Great response, thanks!
SADW keys... I needed that.
Seriously you sound great on the Stellar X2 Vintage. Given that it's only $250 as opposed to $800 for the JZ microphone - I actually felt they sound extremely similar. They both sound good. But pretty impressed by the Stellar X2 Vintage. I personally didn't like the non-vintage Stellar X2 (returned it) but the Vintage Stellar X2 sounds fantastic on your voice.
Thank goodness. I thought I was one of the only ones who was not in love with the regular X2. The Vintage is excellent in comparison.
Totally agree, I always get excited to see Bandrew compare mics to the X2 Vintage because to me it was totally made for his voice. Haven't heard anything quite as impressive yet (although they are all fairly flattering).
I hear "doobly doo" and I instantly upvote.
Sigh,,, TLM 102 is a dream to have... I am using the RODE NT-1 tho such an awesome mic. Got it cause you recommended it btw and cause it was the best overall mic in for instruments, voice for that price range. Thank you!
The NT1 is still incredible and one of the best IMO.

Could you please make a review about the Slate Digital ML1, in my opinion it's a pretty interesting mic.
ps: nice video as always :)
Ha! I just got a ML2 it’s hard to run the plug ins with the ilok3 smh
I was surprised about the low end and the warm tone of the J Z. It sounds a bit like a tube mic. The NT1 has a little bit more of a boxy low end. I recon that would be fine if you were recording vocals as most of the low gets cut anyways to avoid conflict with the instruments.
The ribbon-like characteristic is fantastic
That's what people say about the Heil PR30.
You've reviewed that one... right?
No?

Hello Podcastage, been following you for sa year, love your videos, but the more I watch the more its confusing, i mean how one Good mic vs another Good mic, which one to buy?
Can you please help me choose a microphone from my list?
Im not from USA so prices are higher here and that includes importing from USA with INT Shipping and Import Taxes, but some mics [Lewitt brand] have almost the same local price as in USA.
For streaming and making videos connected to goXLR:
Rode Procaster for 240$ [Local price]
Golden Age Project D2 for 265$ [US Import]
MXL BCD-1 for 265$ [US Import]
King Bee KIT for 245$ [US Import]
Lewitt LCT 440 Pure KIT for 285$ [Local price]
I mentioned the price, but I more care about the quality I also have speech disorder, stammering/stutter so my guess i need more sensitive to hear me when im stuck on words or maybe not, i dont know.

Hey all. Quick question, is the Audio Technica AT2020 and the Behringer Uphoria UMC22a good duo? I dont know alot about microphones so I just want other peoples opinions.
Yes! Go for it! I also have AT2020, and i love it. I also have the Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD (both UMC22 and UMC204HD have the MIDAS preamps), no issues whatsoever. Although i heard that UMC22 has some driver issues, there are some workarounds (a lot of UA-cam tutorials which can help you), but if you're not a techy guy, this might be a problem for you. If you're still trying to decide, i would really recommend you to consider saving up for Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD, it's about 30 dollars more, but it's worth it. Good luck!
I'm surprised they didn't send you one of their excellent pop filters.

I finally got the chapter markers on this video!
Hey, I'm looking for a new mic for my channel. I currently use the Samson Meteor Mic and will switch to XLR probably.
Can someone help out, I am clueless on what to buy.
I make guides on UA-cam.
My budget for the mic is $200. So far the rode procaster looks pretty good.
I thought to get a dynamic mic because I have a lot of background noise and my room isn't sound treated at all.
Any help is appreciated!
You can't go wrong with Rode podcaster. As for the dynamic mic - i would go for shure 57 beta.
My advice is:
If you plan to talk over your videos without any background music - go for a darker sounding mic.
If you plan to use some kind of background music - go for a bit brighter sounding mic (it will help separate you from the background music better)
