I have not owned either But I have friends that have both or just the Astatic or Tuner separately and my listening ear I like the Astatic for A.m. And Turner on single side band.
I have a D104 that ive had for 43 years and use it on my base radio all the time.I also have a Turner plus3b its just a spare.I dont have any real reason why ,but im an Astatic D104 guy.
Use to be Turner because the ceramic plate you speak into were so much heavier and made noise cancelation was better. Now either one cause they are both owned by same manufacturer so they use same parts.
Astatic works great, but especially with old radios until about 1975-1980, then they started to change something in the radios and the high-pitched sounds were transmitted worse, so the Turner is better audible. Astatic sounds strong on very old tube radios without modulation limits. It was designed for them. In SSB the Turner is better, it gives more sound, sharpness is not needed here. For SSB, a regular dynamic microphone with little gain sounds best. Both Astatic and Turner had dynamic microphones for SSB. They also worked well for AM, but not so aggressively, good for local communication. Astatic dynamic head is cool. Universal microphone. Turner's problem is that it is a bit small and less comfortable, the microphone is too low (small leg) and the microphone head itself is a bit small and not impressive, it looks too standard, but it works great. Both microphones drain the batteries very little, they usually run out of power after 2 years. You have to be careful with acid, once every six months it is worth checking the battery voltage under load of the PTT key. If 7V, it needs to be replaced. Health for you.
I love both to be honest, It really all comes down to what radio you're using. Where one radio will sound magnificent with an Astatic another will do better with a Turner. Overall you can never go wrong with the older Astatic D104-M6B handheld or the Astatic RD-104 in a vehicle
Hi #1 , I have both Brand's ,I prefer the D104 over the Turner line. The D104s are much easier for me to work on , I have a D104 that I bought new in the box early 1970s , It looks like new still.
Totally depends on the type of radio. If your looking for quality the D104 is it, plus the classic look. Older tube radios love a non amplified D104, a newer Cobra 2000 GTL benefits from a nice Turner Plus 3. Now if you want some killer audio in a tube radio look to the Astatic 77A.
thats very insightful. I guess its like buying speakers for your car. The sound can also depend on the car sterio thats pushing the speakers. Thanks :)
If anyone needs guidance in what microphone works best with what transceiver or transmitter I will be glad to help. I have been customizing microphones for many, many years
Astatic mic has better vocal response than Turner's for my voice I guess every time I have tried to use the Turner mic I'm told I sound muffled, I love the style of the Turner mics one day I may decide to swap the parts out of each one and have a Turner style D104
To be honest, I'm not going to own Astatic for one reason. I'm not telling guys I have to CHOKE THE CHICKEN to talk on a microphone!!! . Ugly and waaaay to tall to comfortably use at voice level

I Like the D-104 on the older type radio's you get a real nice sound if you have a valve P.A ( FT101 etc )
Turner jm+2u even though they are somewhat fragile.
Turner Plus 3 is the best mic ever built. Period.
Looks like Astatic is the winner, but I wonder how many have just never tried a turner (Like my self) and just stick with what has always worked well.
Astatic mics!
I think Turner but I never tried Astatic.
Turner Plus three Home. Mobil astatic 575.
