You know I had a feeling, I felt that Roche someone so filled with life and energy was going to be used to highlight degradation and how it burns SOLDIERS out, but I never thought he was going to become a sephiroth clone

According to Crisis core, only G-type SOLDIERs degrade. Not S-type. As Project S prevailed over Project G, Roche is supposedly a S-Type SOLDIER who doesn't degrade. If he's suddenly heavily degrading in a super fast way here, it's because of the unknown experiment - including more Jenova's cells that he already got injected when he joined SOLDIER - that Hojo did on him, not because he's a SOLDIER.
The black robes are mentally weak people who got injected with Jenova/S cells. It can include G-type SOLDIERs (probably like Broden) who are in the final phase of degradation, and thus lose their original mental strenght, knowing SOLDIERs are selected to be mentally strong to tolerate the mako + Jenova's cells injections while keeping their mental integrity and free will (that's why they do not answer the Reunion and are not under Sephiroth/Jenova influence - at least S-type SOLDIERs, and G-type SOLDIERs who are not yet degrading).

so he was aware that his chaotic tendencies were also accelerating his degradation after whatever Hoyo injected him.
Roche's engine burned out. No more fule left in the tank. The speed demon's final race ended in a crash that he couldn't walk away from.
I have a feeling that Cloud grew to like or at least respect Roche
- He insisted on a one on one duel
- He treated the entire fight as a duel between SOLDIERs
- He was actually concerned that Roche might be falling apart
Damn, Roche at the very least you lived by your own brand of your honor as SOLDIER
Every single time Roche showed up, he helped Cloud and never hindered him. So he was a bro.
@mspionage1743 I wouldn't say help. It's more like he just wanted to have a worthy rival. Also, Roche is a wild card, as his assessment states, so he's more of a chaotic neutral.
There was a convention recently where Roche’s VA was in. I got the chance to talk to him (I had just finished the section) and he told me that in the script when Cloud says “he is… an asshole” it also says “(Cloud kinda likes Roche)”. I found it so funny and sweet at the same time

He was so over-the-top and theatrical, loved him.
Really was sad to see the motor cycle enthusiest end up becoming one of those robed men. Even the way he shows up and uncharacteristically destroys his own bike I guess foreshadows that this will be his last time duking it out with Cloud.

This was something complety diffrent. Geostigma. Sephiroth's Mind that was still in the Lifestream infected the Lifestream that saved the Planet, when Midgar got destroyed in the End. This has nothing to do with degradation. Btw what happend here neither. Hojo pretty sure gave him Jenova Cells.
Only G Type Soilders like Angel or Genesis can degreading like in Crisis Core.
If dffoo was still alive Roche would join before Red XIII. His BT would have the final fight effect. My guess is this version would be his alt
I wanted to know a little more about this guy, Was he Bred and raised in shin-ra like Sephiroth, Angeal and Genesis? Or was he one of the folks like Zack and Cloud who had a normal life and family that Joined Shin-ra?

This was a sad one for me. I liked Roche from the beginning as it was very clear and obvious that he was doing all he could to help us. SPOILERS:
Considering he was created through the SC, he was essentially Cloud's son or brother at the very least so his kinship with Cloud and his (persona) death after warning Cloud/trying to protect him one last time was all the more heart breaking. He is officially part of the team in my head canon along with Cissnei.

Last time I checked, all SOLDIERs are showered with mako and injected with Jenovah cells... so at least it should be a possibility.

This fight is fucking trash. The combat isn’t designed for 1-1 considering the enemies don’t stagger from anything.

I was hoping in part 3 during our final assault on shinra that he'd join us, but it seems it's not meant to be.
Not if the Arbiters of Fate have anything to say about it. They really don't like deviations from canon, it seems.
Perhaps there's something 'special' about his treatment that could make that happen, but we'll have to doubt that so far.

So Roche put it all on the line for one last fight with Cloud, the first one to excite him so much. I give him major props for holding onto his mind for as long as he did.
I also like how the jenova cells and experimentation gave him acces to more dark magic like abilities.
Roche hastened his degradation as a Sephiroth clone just to have one last dance with our man. That's dedication.

So im guessing Roche accelerated his SOLDIER degradation process to tap deeper into his jenova cells powers to be on par with cloud damn talk about dedication rip
Basically yea, if you assess him it says how hojo's treatment gave him heightened abilities but accelerates degredation.
Roche knew that he was degrading. He must have already started to feel the effects back in Junon. That must be why he put himself on Hojo's table. Just to get that one last burst of energy so that he could go all out in a fight against Cloud just one last time.

@@FF7-fr No, all SOLDIERs degrade. Even those of Project S. Only Sephiroth cannot degrade because his traits cannot be copied and his cells cannot diffuse, and thus cannot degrade.
The rest of the SOLDIERs from Project S are just streamlined versions the project, hence why they’re able to degrade and cannot be made the same way as Sephiroth.
The only ones who haven’t degraded are Zack and Cloud. In Cloud’s case, he houses pure S cells. Zack’s an odd one.

It's not like in the FF7 compilation there were a lot of people telling lies, gaslighting, or making wrong guesses thinking they're right. The story is full of it, it has always be a thing in the FF7 compilation.
Like Sephiroth in CC who thinks and tells Zack classic SOLDIERs are only mako enhanced while he would be created from Jenova (in the Nibelheim reactor scene). While it is stated in OG, CC, AC and Rebirth that all SOLDIERs are all injected with Jenova cells.
Like in the Re-trilogy were Cloud really think he's degrading while he's not. He has never been degrading in the Compilation.
Like when Dr Sheiran and other characters tells black robes are SOLDIERs degrading. While in OG they are the Nibelheim townpeople survivors recovered by Hojo, not SOLDIERs. And globally every people injected with J cells who are not mentally strong enough to tolerate them, like in ToTP part 3.
The report in CC is clear. It's from the scientists working on the Jenova project, writing their observations on the results of Project S and Project G. They observed that G-type SOLDIERs were degrading, while S-type were not. That is exactly why Hojo took the head of the Scientific department, and Hollander fell into disgrace. I mean it's literally the absolute core of Crisis core story ! Have you played it, really ?

I just found there is a Final fantasy wiki page specifically about Degradation, quoting he official sources. It will enlighten you about it.

Damn, the comments act like he's dead when he becomes one of those cloaked guys. Maybe we will see him again in the northern crater or he fuses with those monster and becomes devil ride enemy.
Even if that happens, I hope he still has some of that bombastic energy he had if we fight him again. I liked him.
being mentally dead is in a sense the same thing, so it makes sense people treat him as such.
Well, the caped dudes were all discarded at the Northern crater in OG but I wouldn't be surprised if some were shown being saved and liberated from Jenova's influence at the end of part 3. You know, like a scene in the credits showing a few of them still very pale but dressed as humans and recovering in Nibelheim or something.

I love how the game is really making degradation a real fear and worry for Cloud. You knew in Remake he was expecting it to happen someday to himself. In this one, he's seeing it hit closer and closer to home as people he knows fall prey to it and become "one of them." I'll bet anything he ends up in black robes himself at one point in part 3.
I noticed that here Roche pose was the same as Sephiroth
Why did he get cellular degradation though? Hair going white and breaking down like Angeal and Genesis? He was given sephiroth cells, same as Cloud and Zack which don't have that side effect.
@Chocobuu1 I think SC stands for Sephiroth/Cloud. I think that because hojo only had a finite number of S-Cells he started using Clouds that make up for it, and since they aren't pure S Cells only that caused the degradation. Plus I think I saw Soldiers Class C at The Temple of the Ancients (within Rebirth).
Been a while since I last played the original game but...
If I remember correctly, Cloud was, or rather turned out to be, the only successful Sephiroth clone.
All the other Sephiroth clones, SOLDIERS included, turned out to be failures and ended up as these black-robed ones.
All mako infused people get strength and other heightened human abilities but in exchange for accelerated cellular degradation, in Crisis Core it is explained nd also in Remake explained by President Shinra.
@@mariobenedicto3582In the OG, both Cloud and Zack were taken by Hojo after the incident and experimented on. At some point, Hojo saw them as failures too, as that was the cause why they were forgotten in the Nibel basement lab. Until one day Zack, being the strongest (as he had prior SOLDIER enhancements) woke up and freed himself and Cloud.
Hojo is so oblivious to Cloud (as he saw him as another failure) that it took a while for him to recognize Cloud when he saw him in the Shinra building.

To everyone else at Shinra, Cloud is merely an obstacle on the path to Aerith or an annoyance. But Roche really, genuinely respected and admired Cloud. He maybe even liked him.
Sure, Roche is annoying. I feel like both Cloud and we as players internally said "great, it's this guy again" every time he showed up. But at the same time, he's a nice change of pace from the villains like Rude and Scarlett.
He's not evil for evil's sake like Sephiroth and he's not in it for the deranged science like Hojo. He's not even cruel. He's the Johnny of the SOLDIER program, if you will. He's in it for the thrill of feeling the wind whip by him and the adrenaline rush of fighting someone better than himself, pushing himself to his limits and beyond.
I don't know what's sadder: that he's gone, or that his fate is to be one of the hollowed out robed men.

Another life Hojo ruined, Karma must bite him eventually, hopefully our crew will personaly deliver his well deserved punishment
What's truely terrifying is hie character from the start blended the line between friend and foe. Kind of like Sephiroth with Cloud. This isn't degradation from G or S Cells it's The Reunion either enhanced S Cells or a new one entirely like a forced collective consciousness.
Maybe we see Roche again in the northern crater or something

If I had to guess Roche ending up as a robed man has something to do with him volunteering to be in Hojo's lab in one of the previous cutscenes where I'm pretty sure he got that "SC4" tatoo which likely stands for "Sephiroth Clone 4", Hojo also tried making Sephiroth clones in the OG so I guess this is how it was reimagined in the remake trilogy

My game glitched and as soon as the fight started I had control of Barret while Cloud was on "autopilot". So basically I kicked the capital S shit out of poor Roche 😅

I dont knew Roche is a failure Clone of Sephiroth, therefore he is biologically a half-brother of Cloud, as also Zack, they were infected with Jenova Cells, But they have secondary effects, Zack decrease his powers, and Cloud swap his memories with Zack.
Zack wasn’t affected because he already had mako injected in him, while cloud was left comatose and fractured after Zack died clouds mind finally merged with the 2 combinations of mako and jenova

Disappointed with how SOLDIERS become robed men. I thought is was a gradual process over time, not immediate, and in such a silly way.
I think it went faster/immediate for Roche because he did some funky stuff with Hojo
Who changed Roche’s clothes?
I think it’s easier if you counter and black his attacks and follow up with an atb command on block. It makes for a cleaner fight.
But also, it’s cool that he is pressured for the second phase. It makes for an easy win, but makes sense with the story because he’s already degrading and no where near 100%. Literally on the final stretch.

Was it ever explained in the original game what happened to all the hooded figures after Sephiroth was defeated? I don’t really recall, and after seeing ppl like Roche and Broden succumb to this, it makes me hope the get back to normal somehow.

Same, I’m glad to see someone shares the same sentiment I have about them. I quite liked Roche and Broden so seeing them get reanimated as just another faceless walking corpse was pretty sad, even if they are ultimately just minor side characters in the grand scheme of things lol

Cloud was pretty much the only successful Sephiroth Clone. Hojo didn't acknowledge it back then so he deemed him a failure.
