Thanks so much for this, Sietze!
What you say about the backwards way in which music is now usually taught in the Western world reminds me of my childhood piano lessons. My teachers could tell that ai had a good musical ear, but were horribly afraid of my learning to play "by ear," and so insisted on reading music being the center of my learning process. It actually proved to be rather cumbersome -- especially as ineptly as they went about it! -- and really held me back. I finally developed fluency in reading music when ai took up the clarinet, and later was able to transfer that skill back to the keyboards. But now it's so clear to me that my teachers should have worked with my gifted ear, rather than avoid it.

Dank je wel, Sietze. Zo goed.

The lecture was very interesting. You are, in addition to being a master of music, a very friendly person. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

    Excelente video, muchas gracias.
Querría preguntarte si recomendarías algún método en concreto, o varios métodos, para aprender a improvisar, que nos puedas recomendar.
    Muchísimas gracias por tu ayuda.

As a developmental psychologist, it is a great pleasure to listen to your thoughts, I deeply agree with them and can only confirm your philosophy! Thank you!

It was interesting and fascinating to listen to you, Mr de Vries. All the information about improvisation and how to learn to improvise, step by step, is explained excellently and differentiated by you. What a wonderful and extensive collection of instruments you have. Very nice! And they also look particularly well cared for. Very nice. Thank you for this wonderful lecture on improvisation. It was a great pleasure to listen to. Hartelijk dank daarvoor, mijnheer de Vries. 🎼

Thank you, thank you! The numbers of enthusiastic children who were driven from what should have been a pleasant experience with piano by forbidding them them the "evil crime" of "playing by ear" and making up their own tunes. They were told that (improvising) is bad because you can't make any mistakes to be corrected by reading the music and practicing!

No way, is Church attendance that bad.? I Thought it was bad here in London, UK. We don't even get to access an instrument to practice on. So the only option is to improvise, and your experience is invaluable. Thank You.

Thank you! An outstandingly valuable video, full of ideas that just a decade or two ago would have been thought eccentric, and which now seem eminently sensible and completely practical - almost self-evidently valid. Everyone who teaches music - especially those who teach it to children - should watch this video. And what a wonderful collection of instruments!

und Bach waere mit Sicherheit begeistert gewesen. Und die Fuge: meine Güte - mit was für einer Leichtigkeit und Unangestrengtheit sie gespielt wurde.
Da wird man dann schon etwas neidisch. Chapeau !!! ❤❤❤

Superb. If only composition were taught as a natural evolution of this approach.

This is a good start for the week! I did recently a video(not uploaded ) exactly trying to explain the specifics of improvisation.Because many people teach it as it were simply another type of written composition only, but it is a bit more than this…

Thank you for this inspiring video! Im an organist from Ostfriesland (as my channel clearly tells😂) and I once heard you play in Groothusen. I learned conpletly from sight reading and with your videos you really pushed my interest for improvisation! Thank you for that!
Btw, is it anyway possible to play on the green monster as an extern organist? Is it even worth questioning?

Do you have plans developing improvisations in tonal styles of the XiX and XX century? Gratulations again for the flawless performance!

Sietze improviseert op exact hetzelfde niveau als bach componeert. Dit zegt iets over bach.Zijn kunstje is na te doen. Zeer overtuigend zoals hier met Sietze. bach is een zwaar overschat componist.
