Wow! For goodness sake, I've only just found this in 2024. It's absolutely, gobsmackingly, awe-inspiringly, fabulously brilliant. I've never heard such a stunning performance of this in my life. No wonder he is such a huge star. ❤
es una picardía la puesta de esta Traviata. JK en esta caballeta ha demostrado no solo lo que es tener técnica sino como exponerla al rigor de la puesta. lo difícil que es cantar de espaldas y debajo de un banquito de plástico, pasa desapercibido si lo seguimos escuchando mientras camina en redondo acelerando el paso y luego, da las peores notas de la partitura en una plasticidad física mientras ordena las cosas, para finalizar en un paso rápido el acutti del aria que recien corta una vez que ha dado dos escalones de subida. Realmente excepcional. muchos supondrán que eso es fácil porque es un hombre delgado y deportista. para nada. hay que saber como se mueven los músculos del abdomen y sobre todo es imposible de imaginar cómo forzar el perineo mientras se camina, es casi imposible. solo algunos pueden hacer estas cosas que son más admirables en la apreciación del todo que el tenor entrega en cada actuación que evaluando o comparando el resultado de la voz. es muy cómodo dar un sobreagudo detenido o levantando los brazos, es lo que vemos generalmente. Este tipo de excepciones son maravillosas, por todo lo que implica.
The things singers have to put up with. Listen to him lose his note for having to contort and move : precisely at 00:48 sec, then the cabaletta is super slow and to end it all the guy has to sing his high C while back to the public... wow. I respect Kaufmann for his patience and understanding.
Does anyone know if this Traviata production can be obtained in totality somewhere on DVD perhaps? Unfortunately, I missed its showing on France2 in December. I find Kaufmann's performance in all respect perfect.
@turbofreddy Totally agreed, but Kaufmann is something else.. What a gorgeous voice, with or without a clean high c at the end.. the rest was so beautifully sung.. masculine big, voice.. give me goosebumps.
i agree, and i love the timbre of his voice... by the way, i think he was goofing around too much at the end of this aria... that's why the C seemed like an afterthought. just listen to the "O mio rimorso" available on UA-cam from Paris 2007, that high C is just ridiculous! :-)
I like the production though I think it is quite a difference to see it as video with this excellent picture direction than to see it on stage where details get lost. A friend from Paris who saw it live agreed to this. Im German and there are many more really disgusting or boring productions over here. This is only another way to tell the story and there is nothing disgusting with it.
Rest of my comment Sure, some things may be overdrawn to show the decadence of the society, but everything fits well together and is quite moving. Im almost 100 % sure that Jonas loved the production as well. He not only likes to sing, but loves to act as well and a conventional set gives him a lot less possibilities to show it. (BTW there are some guys on Parterre who really need a hearing aid or are they mad because he prefers to sing in Europe?)
I just wonder how long the stupid directors will rule in the big European opera houses bringing the opera to the level of the provincial German cabaret?!!
Kaufmann is such a talented actor/singer. He can sing while laying on his back, while bending over, while walking... he can sing while acting as one would if they where completing a real life task. I agree however that facing the audience while in the optimal postural position would have added that extra bit of perfection at the end. Just listen to how excellent it did sound when he was in this optimal singing position!
OMG! What an awful production. It makes you want to sing in concerts only! Also the tempo of the cabaletta is much too slow ... mind you ... just for my taste. And still. What Jonas is making of the situation... absolutely a miracle. I do hope his voice is not going to do what Villazon's did.

I cantanti però dovrebbero opporsi. Qui kaufmann era molti giovane e quindi doveva farsi conoscere, MA ORA NON PIÙ DEVE ESSERE LUI A DETTARE LE REGOLE! Non mi si dica che si diverte ad amare il manichino/Aida o a ballare nel lettino di suo figlio in C
