I don't think anyone has mentioned yet the similarities between MFTM and Recoil - Hydrology (which was released only 4 months later), particularly 'Grain' reminds me of 'Pimpf'. I guess that was Alan's sound at the time. I appreciate your interview with Dave Bascombe especially as it confirms Alan's vital importance.
Great interview Vaughan. There is such a unique sound to MFTM which is difficult to described. Beautifully mixed by Dave in my opinion. I personally love the album version of Sacred. I'm going to confess now, it's my favourite DM album and I have them all. 👌
Kevin hi!! Between my natural excitement and Dave's naturally fast pace, I get what you mean !! Thank God for UA-cam's SPEED CONTROL function !! VG :-)
Very insightful video again. It's clear that Alan was the driving force in terms of sounds, given the number of times his name was mentioned (and the alarm went off ;) ). What's also clear is that from the golden age (BC, MFTM, Violator and SOFAD), is that in terms of sound creation in the studio these days, it seems like they can't be asked and rely on presets. Maybe that rule should have been kept? Very much looking forward to part 3. Great stuff Vaughn
I’ve said this once and I’ll say this again. Alan was the musical genius behind the scenes. He just could take Martin’s demos and turn them into these masterpieces. Like you he is truly missed. I actually like the song sacred. It’s one of my favorite tracks. Thank you Vaughn 😊.
I think I just found the Sacred (Monitor Mix): dmlive.wiki/wiki/Demos_%26_Studio_Outtakes it’s under the 1987 Music For The Masses era part in the website (:
Yep, with a synth melody at the end which is not present on the finished version. Possibly because they basically stole that line from But Not Tonight :)
I remember an interview on Danish TV where they confirmed what Dave B said, that it was in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do. We didn't care, we were just excited they would mix in Denmark
The main thing I disagree with, is the welcoming warmth of Dave's love of guitars being introduced in DM music. To me, personally, it was the beginning of the end of the Depeche I became obsessed with in the wee early years. This lead to more guitars and live drums to the point where the band became a hybrid rock-electronic act. It's their career and they deserve everything they've achieved, but for me the defining, cutting edge Depeche were their years in the 80s. Love DM forever!
George hi !! Yes that is a view that many other DM fans would agree with. There are those also who welcomed the addition of guitars. I personally was open to the addition of guitars but I am not keen on this more "bluesy approach" they have been leaning into on the more recent albums. VG :-)
@@VaughnGeorge Vaughn George Everyone is right and no one is wrong when it comes to taste. I am much older than you Vaughn, I was a rock guitarist in Australlian rock bands back in the 1970s but revolted against the entire scene in the later part of that decade leading into the early 80s. I was convinced and obsessed in and with post-punk synthesizer pop, early drum machines with relentless metronomic rhythms and sound pallets and arrangements that owed little to what came before. In the early days Depeche even frowned upon chords considering them 'cheating' they instead composed intricate yet simple counter monophonic melodies, much like in classic music. This was my new world. A new brave world that moved away so much from the past, away from cock rock, away from guitars and live drums and the way songs were written & performed. A new subculture was born. Depeche Mode was exactly the type of band I wanted to be in. No one but no one were similar to DM, no one wrote and produced songs and sounds as they did, and live they were mesmerizing and so fresh. Live In Hamburg, 1984 is my favourite recorded DM concert. So when later they started introducing guitars, and then live drums it alienated me. I began to lose interest. My personal history had me becoming disappointed in what I viewed as a return to the old ways. I had no interest in this, i had no interest in a hybrid band, which is what DM eventually became. Much love to them though, they've created such a legacy and 40 years on still proving they are worthwhile. Love them always, but mostly because the moved my tectonic plates around 40 years ago. Thank you so much Vaughn for the BRILLIANT work you are doing on your channel, the reviews the interviews. You're a valuable wonder to us all. Keep safe and healthy! George
Great stuff Vaughn! I am really glad the channel is up and running again. Take a break but I think this will lead to even more interviews with other key players (excuse the pun) in the story. Kudos! Gareth Jones next?
Hansa studio is truely a majic place. Im glad they are putting so much m oney back into the studio..lets pray theynare able to purchase the older portion that a storage space for another company..and was the actual studio that so manyngreat tunes originated from like David Bowie[LOW] CURE, do the hansa..led zeplen..etc.
Sorry havent commented in a while lol Working on a creative DM fan project and these are just gold. The intro music is very punch your fist in the air 😁 Cheers Vaughn! Hope your doing well over there! 😎🍻

The missing keyboard riff from the Sacred rough mix sounds so Depechey, and really such representative for their 80s sound. It's a shame they couldn't fit it in the song's final version...
Introducing guitar was the first step in turning DM from an experimental London pop band to an L.A. rock group. I resented that. But it was Martin's band and Martin's choice.
Thank you for this, I always love talking about the creating songs. Just idea, Would be possible to play each song and Dave can say some comment to each song,..:-)
I have the little 15 single and St Jarna and Moonlight Sonata are b sides. Always thought it was interesting as the two originals seem to be like 2 takes on the same musical idea. 😊
So, what's the source for the chopped up vocal samples in the PLT "Glitter Mix" outro? Are these really MLG's vocals from "Everything Counts (Reprise)"? Because I always thought it was a female voice. Also, any chance to get Flood for a similar chat?
In those days they Made a great sacrifice, wasting a precious time recording mftm, using different places (denmark,France,England) And take a Lot of time prove And taking song by song listening Anda listening, thinking, taking ideas And that ideas:(NLMDA "accident"). Thanks vg for this interview.
OmG 😱 Studio out take of Sacred is completely inferior to the mix AS IT IS on MFTM. My favorite DM track-- and saw MFTM tour shows 5 times including the Rose Bowl gig. I believe the only times Sacred has been performed.... unless lately, I haven’t been so interested in DM after Ultra
Apart from the usual suspects, BTW, NLMDA and occasionally Strangelove, tracks like Nothing and Sacred have never had an airing since. Can't upset the routine too much.
I agree but also disagree with the introduction of the guitar. Yes it works perfectly in its early use by DM, but the guitar is just as ubiquitous as synthesizer presets really.
If you had done your research, you would have noticed Mr Bascombe didn't took part in the Stjarna and (commonly but incorrectly called) Moonlight Sonata sessions: www.discogs.com/es/Depeche-Mode-Little-15/release/2141384
Vaughn you mentioned nlmda split mix.Im sure you notice on the album vrs that when fades out you can hear the beginning of the split mix...do you think the split was done first and they faded it just for cohesion of the record?
As a foreigner, Mr Bascombe is so hard to understand, weird accent, he speaks fast + he kind of swallow letters with some accent mixed, really hard to understand 😁
This is what happens when a fanboy conducts an interview. He’s jumping out of his skin with excitement and can’t let the interviewee just tell a story without constantly injecting ‘’hmms’ and ‘ahhhs’ and other noises to break up the flow.
You're right !! I could not contain my excitement and I realised this afterwards in editing !! Remember though that I am not a PRO presenter and just a guy. VG
Dave- the reverb variation on that PLT riff totally jumps out for me. Never knew who was responsible for that brilliant detail. Well done! (7:30)
Boom! & Sunday just got so much better 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
Cheers matey!! VG:-)

The Alan Wilder alert is funny. PS: I agree.
Part 2 is another great insight into how they evolved, cementing our thoughts on Alan's input. Great stuff looking forward to part 3!
Video starts - sounded like "So this is mixed in f***ing Denmark.." !!!
Great interview Vaughan. There is such a unique sound to MFTM which is difficult to described. Beautifully mixed by Dave in my opinion. I personally love the album version of Sacred. I'm going to confess now, it's my favourite DM album and I have them all. 👌
There are so many bands that need someone like Vaughn to keep these stories alive for future generations! 👍👍
Awesome stuff Vaughn :) But you guys speak so quickly!! lol I had to put it on on 0.75 speed haha. Keep up the good work
Kevin hi!! Between my natural excitement and Dave's naturally fast pace, I get what you mean !! Thank God for UA-cam's SPEED CONTROL function !! VG :-)
I agree. At 75% it gives it a 4 pints deep feel. More my speed.
This is an outstanding interview.
Hasanain Abdullah thank you Sir !! VG 😎👍🎹

"Sacred" is nice yeah.
Thanks VG, Simon and Lloyd....Great job!
This has been a great series for us Depeche Mode fans, Can't thank you enough for doing this.
Love this interview! This is my favorite DM album!
It's an album that really stands out for sure.
Loving this series Vaughn! Even in times like this you keep us entertained so thank you
Here we go again!
Nice interview.
"Stjärna" is the swedish word for star.
I always thought it was St. Jarna! Lol
A fantastic instrumental.
Always loved that track, such a gem.
Excellent to hear you guy's talk. Thanks !
So many honest and interesting facts about my favorite album
It still amazes me that the hi hat sound on Nothing was a bus door closing sampled!
I think I just found the Sacred (Monitor Mix): dmlive.wiki/wiki/Demos_%26_Studio_Outtakes it’s under the

Great find, sounds amazing.

nice!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I definitely prefer that version over the released.
Awesome! Co-producer indeed. Thanks so much - always very enjoyable!
Mind blowing! Again Vaughn! 🖤🙏🏻 Funny that I was not alone with the ”Gayaan” pronunciation 😜
I remember an interview on Danish TV where they confirmed what Dave B said, that it was in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do. We didn't care, we were just excited they would mix in Denmark
Steen Gershøj Petersen ...less distractions being in a more rural environment, like what all the bands said about Conny plank’s studio in Germany.
Hi Vaughn great chat-lots of nuggets!
Awesome again!
Great interview again. Thanks. The Things You Said is an amazing mix on MFTM. Martin’s voice is “scary good” on that track.
Excellent stuff, thanks.
Thank you Vaughn
waz 312 you are very welcome !! VG 😎👍🎹

davey Rothgeb thank you Sir!! VG 🎹👍😎

great interview!
At first I thought you started this by saying "and this was mixed in f**king Denmark" which seemed a bit rude about our Danish friends 😂
Very good interview. Hope Pleasure, Little Treasure gets spoken about as I am intrigued how that came about.
I have a feeling it had something to do with Martin digging Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. Its got a similar vibe to the song Roadrunner.
Brilliant stuff. Close to 10000subs.
True pioneer of music, great interview your best to date,so interesting keep it up

I know I have heard the Monitor mix of Sacred before... I just can't find it anywhere. Ask Dave for a copy?
Pleasure, Little Treasure is an underrated banger, especially the Glitter Mix. Turn it up loud, you will see.
What reverbs were used as well as delays on lead vocals?
Great question but I have no idea and I doubt that Dave would remember either. VG

Totally agree with Dave’s view on Sacred. The final album version lacked balls! 🎶✌🏻

Vaughn, can you write a letter to Anton Cobijn?

this might be the version of Sacred that Dave mentioned
dmlive.wiki/wiki/Demos_%26_Studio_Outtakes#Sacred_.28studio_outtake.29
Ok it's a strange question but does Fletch a have few teeth capped..
Sacred is one of the best songs on album but it does sound like a demo. IMO it's the bass sound and not so much the mix itself.
I love Alan like everyone...but needed Martin's songs period.
