Sohni Mahiwal is a 1958 Bollywood film produced by J. N. Choudhary and directed by Raja Nawathe. The film stars Bharat Bhushan,
Nimmi and Om Prakash in lead roles.
The film's music is composed by Naushad. The film is based on the tragic romances of the Sindh, Sohni Mahiwal.
Shahjada Ijjat Beg comes to India with his caravan and settles in a town in Gujrat. Here he falls in love with Sohani, who has a shop of metal pots.
Mirza arrives in a small town and falls in love with Sohni, daughter of a potter. Their affair creates a scandal and he is thrown out of the town. He then starts meeting her disguised as a shepherd.
Nimmi as the "...unkissed girl of India".
Nimmi is a former Indian screen actress who achieved stardom in the 1950s and early 1960s in Hindi films. She gained popularity playing spirited village belle type characters, but has appeared in diverse genres such as fantasy and social films. Wikipedia

Born as Nawab Bano was born in Agra, India.
The huge success of Barsaat made Nimmi a star and nationwide sensation overnight.
Following Barsaat, Nimmi was flooded with offers. She did films opposite all of the rising trimurti of Hindi cinema - Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor.
In fact, her pairing with Dilip Kumar worked particularly well in films like Deedar (1951), Daag (1952), Aan (1952), Amar (1954) and Udan Khatola (1955).
And yes, all the films had Nimmi pouting and suffering and willing to sacrice herself for the sake of her love if need be.
In fact, she was typecast as the suffering martyr or victim in most of her films. Of her films with Dilip Kumar, special mention must be made of Aan and Amar,
both directed by Mehboob Khan...

Nimmi was one of the top actresses of 40's & 50's. Her talent and unique quality, she began to claw her way to the top of the film world. During her distinguished career in films, this type of the role she played the best. One of the brightest, most tragic movie stars of the Golden Era, as her roles grew bigger, and she reached stardom. Now she was becoming queen of the ripe melodrama as she often played a tragic role. Here on other hands, we have a matinee idol Bharat Bhusan in this film too, and one can enjoy the beautiful visage!
Nimmi in her role as Sohni drowned in the dangerous currents of the river Chenab, while going to keep a tryst with her lover Mahiwal. As he sees her in the water, jumps in, and tried to save her. But, alas, by the end of the song, both lovers drown after being swept away by raging river. A very sad story of two young lovers that lost their lives for the love.
This is not Mahendra Kapoor debut song. He recorded his first song for V. Bulsara film Madmast (1953).
