I really appreciated this video and your honesty. Many people watch videos on UA-cam of people showing off their home cockpits and start to get the (wrong) idea that just having a setup like this will allow them to have fun in DCS, which is 100% wrong. Many of us have had fun with much simpler (and coherent) equipment. Don't expect to have fun in DCS or any other simulator just because you don't have a dream setup. The gain in immersion and fun is not in the same proportion as the cost and complications that exist in having a home cockpit. I've seen some guys with amazing setups who barely knew how to land their fighters. It's not the plane (setup). It's the pilot.😅 Thanks again for this video. 👏👏👏🍻😎
Sometimes the fun is in the journey, not arriving at the destination. Like those times as a child when you used to stare at those Star Wars toys ( or whatever ) in the toy catalogues weeks before Christmas or Birthdays or even when there was a new film coming out. There was always something new an exciting or so you thought. Sometimes though actually achieving that goal isn't as good as the imagined dreams of having it. Must be a nightmare though having to redefine all those modules to where your comfortable with everything. P.S can't go wrong with The Mustang one of the few must have recommendations in my eyes.
That is why VR and clickable cockpits is a godsend. A reasonable HOTAS, rudder pedals and maybe a flight panel for gear, flaps and nuisance switches is great. Just jump into any different aircraft environment, click away virtually and fly. Learn to fly the aircraft sitting in its virtual seat. Motion anyone??? (Another great video as usual btw.)
This is why I still use my gamepad despite all my gear. It's just so much easier to pick up, put down mid-session to take care of household duties, then come back and keep playing.
HOOAH Tuuvas! I honestly miss the days when I had one desk/flight-sim setup that was easy to step into and out of for all needs. And I had all my planes dialed in on the TM Warthog and MFG Crosswinds. The three MFD frames with iUFCExport on iPad was so effective that I had to give others time to find their mouse in training. Another condition with going with the HORNET MIP is that you almost 100% lock yourself into a specific aircraft and although you can cross-map similar aircraft like jets, props, or helicopters, going between the genres is hard after being away from one or the other for a while. It's really like the real world where non-currency shows in performance and recurring training is a benefit in this situation. Granted, there's a reason most military pilots aren't current in more than say 2 aircraft at a time...and the majority, like 95% are only current in one. Happy New Year to ya!
I absolutely love my current pit that I put way too much time and money than I care to admit, but I still find your controller profiles a godsend for when I want to hop in for a quick flight.
Just reached the point you’re at last month by swapping out my TM MFDs for the winwing MIP. It’s strange how despite doing the same thing how different having that full MIP in front of you changes things. I agree slow and steady is the way, is taken me 15 years or so to get to my setup. However it is a pain trying to learn every aircraft new when reprogramming the switches. I tend to keep everything in the F18 position and just program the relevant function to the MIP, at least it won’t mess with my programmed memory then. Next step for you is going FFB, it’s stunn8ng just what that offers to the overall experience
Started with the MiG-21 back in February of 2018 after playing IL-2 great battles for 2 months starting on Christmas back in that followed rapidly with the M2000-C and the MiG-15. Using a T1600M stick and throttle on a 17 inch gaming laptop with a 980m graphics card playing out of hotels while I worked in the field and kicking butt on Alpenwolfs cold war server, and DDCS, built up from there and have about 3/4 of the modules. Have to admit I've been facing a bit of DCS burn-out lately, trying to manage home life, being a dad, work, and other hobbies. Losing the MiG-23 coming out took some of the wind out of my sails as well. Other games such as gunner heat PC, cold waters, Uboat, and now Sea power, have also taken up a portion of my time, as will IL-2 Korea, but when the MiG-29 full fidelity module gets release that will likely breath in some new life for me in the game.
Our guy Galt42 has a blast with an Alienware Laptop, Quest 3, and Logitech X56 Rhino and he loves it. He's an airline pilot and takes all his stuff on the road. Your input is good feedback and reminds me that maybe I just need to take some vacation time away from it. I probably should admit that doing a UA-cam channel on top of DCS and other related activities can all creep together. Time to take and adventure walkabout!
Beautiful set up, Juice. I started small because I wasn’t sure I’d stick with DCS. But, because it was so much better than I anticipated (realistic and fun), over the last 18 months I’ve steadily upgraded everything. I went from $100 HOTAS to $200 HOTAS, then an $800 HOTAS, MFDs, Rudder Pedals, UFC, and now a Buttkicker. It’s a slippery slope. Your words are wise. I need to be aware of “the line” and make sure I don’t cross it. I’m dangerously close, though 😉.
Happy new year Juice Keeping the warthog HOTAS as a backup after years of use..bought the Winwing F-18 throttle base and handle along with the F-16 stick with shaker kit and to complete the kit, Skywalker pedals/w/damper……wow what a difference the cam/spring design makes over the ball/socket..and the pedals are a pure joy to fly with especially removing a spring for helos
Great video Juice, very very true information! If I was starting again I think I would aim to get a real ejection seat then just mount a stick and throttle with VR and call it done.
The fun part of DCS for me, as a parent and husband with very limited time for gaming, is learning to do new things in the Hornet. I jumped in from sim racing so most of the hard points were already in place. Cheap Winwing stick, TWS throttle, and a stream pad XL..great little setup. Fun video. You've got some cool stuff 😮 One tip I can give any sim player who doesn't do VR - buy as big of a curved display as you can, and get it mounted CLOSE to your head! Get that sucker 20 inches in front of your eyes.
I'm an old guy that has to hold stuff out like 3 feet to read it without reading glasses yet as a former pilot I still got 20/15 vision for long range. Visual distance gets hard when you're my age.
Ya know I’ve kinda been feeling this with my rig. Over that past three years I went from a desk/sim set up to a full blown set up similar to yours. I have the Simfab with a center stick. Seems we both might be in need of a separate set up for other stuff besides simming. I like the Winwing mounting system it looks great and reliable I wonder when it will hit the market? Happy holidays Juice!
Thanks, have a great New Year! I have been a flight simmer all my life, I am now 70..DCS take alot more effort now. I am waiting for a flight stick from WinWing.
Started with a super cheap joystick in 1991 with Red Baron. Can not remember my second joystick. Bought the CH Pro pedals in 1998 with the new USB connector. Sidewinder 2 FFB for a long time even with the first IL2. Then I got the x45, x55, x56, and finally the Warthog in 2018 which I still use. I bought the Thrustmaster TPR Pedals in 2020 after using the CH Pro Pedals for 22 years.
I'm not sure I agree. Designing and building my pit is half the fun. In fact, a lot of my controllers are DIY as opposed to bought button boxes. I think the important part is to have fun, and not abandon your duties.
It's pretty subjective to the person, how many years they've been in helplessly are retiring from this because I am actually going to travel more and see more outside stuff while I'm still young and when I say Young I mean 61 😀
I am sitting here watching this with almost an exact replica of your peak fun setup. No Boing chair though and I think the only thing I am missing right now is a panel for gear and jettison actions.
Went through so many joy sticks and throttles for DCS and cougar MFD's, eye trackers ( Itracker and Tobi Eye), tablets x2, 3x 34 inch screens etc. It's been a hell of a journey. One thing though, I always went directly through DCS for all modules for DCS. They deserve all the cash for their development. Steam just adds a extra background app to complicate things.
I have run into similar issues, making the switch to VR. It's almost like stating over again. The sense of reality is definitely mind-blowing. But after years of 2D, VR is very different. So i literally went back to the beginning to retrain the visuals. FYI: getting gas is much easier in VR. The ability to judge diseases visually makes the F16 a much more effective platform, in my opinion.
That balance between in the cockpit feel of being able to reach out and actually touch touch of control, and the visual environment is tantalizing. For me VR is a trick in making your brain think that you're in a cockpit when you're not if you can't reach out and touch it without having to look underneath your goggles
@AIRWARFAREGROUP The struggle to understand what you're seeing and feeling starts immediately. If I don't get to fly for a day or 2 I'm still amazed by just how high off the ground the F16 feels. And your brain will make you feel things that aren't there. Like when you're moving around the airfield and hit the brakes, and the noise bounces a little. I can feel that bounce even though I know it's not real. The biggest downside for me of VR is the loss of time. I can go on a 4YA server, and the next thing I know, it's been 3 or 4 hours.

At this point in my life, it's really getting in the way of other activities. And I've come to realize I have a lot of goals for travel and other experiences and it might just be me, but I'm 61 and understand that none of us lives forever.
Just got my new cockpit putting it all together. My son got it for me for Christmas 🥳 Unfortunately, I didn't think about the monitor. My eyes what they are and needs to be closer than the foot of the cockpit but not so closed that my IR cannot function properly. This way I'm able to look down and 180° each way. I believe I'm only missing the Top Gun set up right now. The TO pad to me is just redundant to what WW has already and implemented in the TB. I don't know why they didn't send the f18 stick. They sent the f-16ex but now thinking about it has more mapping functions. So working out okay.... It's working out well. I really bill the need to get the mosa with a real Helo cyclic. When you fly a Helo, any Helo pilot will tell you that you're fine by the seat of your pants. Not just by landmarks, but the Helo tells you everything in the seat of your pants. I have researched and found a twin axis unit mounts to the front and the back of your cockpit. The higher your cockpit the higher a percentage of rolling pitch. 10° is plenty for Helo flight. It's a bit of a DYI but the software is set up so you can program it for each platform. Really don't need it for fixed wing. This way as I'm doing prep or set up or recon in the Apache and I've sent Ed besides the f4u and the f6f and the p38 with the A6 intruder and the A7 Corsair and last but not least, the F8 Crusader. That's what brought the 2024 beyond. I put in a request for some Blackhawks since Seahawks and either a Sea dragon which is public and published and super stallion. Need a big lift. Hilo. I have the super stylion the community mod but unfortunately you cannot enter any multiplayer like TTI with it in your inventory. So I have it off to the side right now. Really love the journey that you shared. That seat was way too hard for me so I got the zero G seat. Oh that is so awesome! And sortie missions much easier to take for the Long haul. Ty! @AIRWARFAREGROUP Oh that sounds awesome. Unfortunately my disabilities from a bad auto rotation in a 47 got me my dd214. I don't know if it is still working but there is an interesting FC3 clickable cockpit mod that I found quite usefull to fly in VR when you don't have enough buttons on your Hotas. It should be part of the base package in my opinion to get started.
Sometimes less is more. ;) That probably why I’ll never go full (replica) cockpit, as it would be very time consuming to get ‘right’, while ever more constraining (just as you say). It’s a bit like owning a boat; the dream of having it might be better than actually having it. Give me a decent price, and I'll be more than happy to take those off your hands... I'm a disabled vet (though, not disabled BECAUSE of my short service) who is just getting into DCS, coming from MSFS and being a RL private pilot, and most of those other things you listed... Yardwork, etc., well... I can't do those anyway, so this would be good for me!
Mate............................... seriously................................ you're a beginner. I been doing this for 30 years. It's a fucking grind sometimes and that's why I stay a lonewolf - running a VFS? Been there. Thousands of pounds in hardware? Been there - still there. 👍
Hey, don't tempt me 😀 but just in case what part of the world are you in? I'm about an hour drive outside of Portland, Oregon.
Could be worse, you could have gone down the building you own custom panels an flight controls rabbit hole😂😂😂
🤣
Mate............................... seriously................................ you're a beginner. I been doing this for 30 years. It's a fucking grind sometimes and that's why I stay a lonewolf - running a VFS? Been there. Thousands of pounds in hardware? Been there - still there. So chin up - grind it and get on with it because well.............................................. what choice is there?
37 years for me and I doubt you've been in DCS for 30 years. It's only been around for 16. But trust me everything is from the heart.
@@AIRWARFAREGROUP SU27 Flanker pal - before DCS even existed, before it even was LOMAC, FC etc. Point is, i get ya!
Jet by sub logic in 1987 for me was the start. 😀
@@AIRWARFAREGROUP hehehe - i remember that yeah, there was loads i done before SU27. Mig Alley, A10Cuba comes to mind, EF2000, F22 Dominator, actually right back to MSF and even Elite. Yeah............ bloody hell, longer than i thought!! Look, the thing is, we both been around this love hate love hobby of ours for eons, before some of the community were even born, we have waves of interest, buy in, interest, it fluctuates. Don't let it bother you no more, it's part n parcel of it all. I've a full blown home cockpit but i sure as fukc don't live in it. Keep doin what you're doin, when you wanna do it and that's the recipe to keep lovin, hatin, lovin it. ;-) Cheers pal.

;^) Subjective for sure depending on the person perhaps too! How's that PIMAX CL treating you?
I always tell people who ask about getting into Flight sims that it is a deep rabbit hole that once you get in, it keeps sucking you in deeper. I have probably spent more on it than I will like to admit. My most recent purchase:

That's a nice setup!

Or CYBERTAURUS!
And FFB pedals, while we're at it ;)
I don't think so. In fact, I am planning on having a setup like yours, roflmao!
