I was there in the late 80s. These guys melted faces. Doug was and is still a beast. Visited with him in Jackpot, NV when he was touring with Whitesnake. Kal, well, he was probably one of the most amazing/memorable vocalists in Hollywood, along with Ron Keel (whassup Metal Cowboy), who they pulled on stage at the Country Club in Reseda. Kids, if you missed HW in the 80s, I would attest it was like missing Woodstock but with glam... there just wasn't anything better than the strip and all the clubs that promoted talent there... Troubador, FM, China, Gazzaris, Roxy, Whisky, the list goes on. I miss it.
Shane, unfortunately I never got to see Doug in Lion (I lived in NY at that time), but did see him with Hurricane around 1990-1991 (i think) & he just smoked. I miss those days too, but I'm glad to be old enough to have experienced it. Would not want to be 22 years old now. The Roxy Whiskey & Rainbow are still there, but the scene is long gone. It was actually still fun up until the mid 2000's, but now it's like a ghost town. Myself & my friends, all in our 50s, are all that's left...the last of a dying breed. The Rainbow is still owned by the Maglieri family but managed by completely different people. Although they are all cool, & let all of us 30+ year regulars in for free (& let us stay until the very end of last call), its a completely different vibe. It is also pretty much 90% men, so that in & of itself changes the entire dynamic. We are just grateful it's still going, we can still go eat decent Italian food with UFO, Van Halen, Motley Crue , etc playing in the background, & still run into someone that we haven't seen in years. Great times man!

No doubt! How they didn't make it as big or actually bigger than Motley Crue or Poison is BEYOND ME!! Same as like Julliet, Kix, and a handful of other ones!
Back in the day. These guys were awesome and highly respected on the Sunset Strip Club Circuit amongst all us fellow musicians. Kal Swan was an intense frontman. Had the privilege to see these guys rock at the Roxy in Hollywood.
Awesome!!! Lucky! Bands like Lion, Kix, Malteze and Julliet are bands that are so underrated and just because they didn't make it as big as Motley Crue doesn't make them any less. Actually a lot of times they are better than the big bands!
@@Icarusvampire Yep. I was in the circles bak in the day on the Sunset Strip. Played in bands Nitrous Roxx and China Blue heavily on the circuit. Also went to music school at MI in Hollywood. Rumor was the drummer Mark Edward's management company crumbled the band. Such a shame. I just watched this video again and gave me goosebumps! When we saw these guys play, Kal had such an intense and intimidating stage presence. I remember him starring us down. We were like yeah, this guy is a bad ass.
@@Rickster777 - Could only imagine what it must have been like on the Sunset Strip back in the 70's and 80's when all that stuff was taking off and going on!!! Wish I could have been there!
Lion were an incredible band and were definitely one of the best in their field and I just think it's a really big shame that they aren't together as a band anymore cause they disbanded in 1989 so anyone who has seen them are extremely lucky. I think if they were still together they could have potentially been really big and could maintain being in the public eye. As doubtful as it is I hope one day they all reform and record another album.
Their disbandment wasn't by choice - Mark Edwards was in a nasty bike accident, so that pretty much killed the band. Kal & Doug went on to do Bad Moon Rising (after Doug's stint with Hurricane) - and they were pretty amazing - I only saw them once in a tiny club in the Valley. Kal is apparently out of the business, but if you check out Doug's IG, they had a reunion dinner before the last Dead Daisies' show at the Whisky. It pisses me off that I was so close to seeing all those guys since I went to that show - I've met Doug, Kal & Jerry, but never Mark.
Everybody is twitching about Kal And Doug while I discovered them because of drummer Mark Edwards, of whom I was a fan of since his work in Steeler featuring Yngwie J and Ronnie Lee.
Lion and Badlands are hands down the most criminally underrated bands of the 80s and 90s (if not ever) . Their music can easily challenge that of the better known bands anyday
The drummer, Mark Edwards, is now a successful business man due to an accident in 89 which ceased his drumming career. he is also currently the Chairman of the famous Wilhelmina Modeling Agency.
I just ran into Kal 9/16/2018 at the Rainbow after the Dead Dasies (the band Doug currently plays in) show at the Roxy. He no longer sings, has a family, & works in the film industry...ironically lives 5 minutes down the road from me (Woodland Hills CA). Mark Edwards made it there from Texas, he has a tough time walking since he was almost paralyzed from a motorcycle accident not long after they disbanded. Both of them were super nice. Jerry I have seen around for years, he's still playing local gigs around So Cal & I believe he still works for Friedman Amplifiers. He told me that Sun night was the first time they have all seen each other since the band broke up, almost 30 years ago. Doug is one of my favorite guitar players, he also lives locally and is very cool in person, however he's always surrounded by friends, swarmed by fans consequently tough to have a conversation with. However if you catch him at the right time, he's great talking to, will sign anything, take photos, & has no ego whatsoever.
Thanks for the update on Kal Swan. When his kids get old enough he should come out of retirement and sing some songs with Doug. He can still keep his day job.
I definitely hear "Photograph" in the verses. And now that you mention it, the chorus does sound like a take on "Panama". "Whatchoo gonna do gonna do" is straight out of Ratt's "Wanted Man". The song even ends like "Wanted Man" does. The close out chorus where they're going "Power luh-uv" reminds me of something I can't quite place yet.
many bands of the 80's used this "harmonic chords" formula which Van Halen started popularizing since his debut, that's why it all kinda sounds the same - harmonic chords had been used since mid 80's a lot by musicians. The same thing analogical to power chords which are used by many bands and they sound the same in any harmony! It's all just musical formulas and people just use them, that's why it all sounds partly similar - can't avoid those 8 notes despite of how hard you try! : )
They had bad management and Kal had two boys to take care of and realized been on the road with a rock band wasn't feasible. I think he has one of the better voices in rock music.
All the same "struggling to find a sound" crap from the 80s. Some guy tried to tell me that Doug Aldrich was better than Vivian Campbell in Dio. What a friggen joke. This guy isn't in Viv's universe.
Maybe so , but in all honesty Vivian Campbell wasn’t quite in Steve Clark’s league either . But yet he still stepped in for him for Def Leppard and now tears it up for them too ! Please do your research before you comment ... ✌️
One of the underrated great bands of the time
Doug Aldrich is highly appreciated & underated as a guitarist. IMO.
Loved when he joined Hurricane.
