As the divide between Flanders and Wallonia keeps growing, Belgium faces an unprecedented political crisis. How do you reconcile two cultures, two languages and two identities within one state?
The streets of Stavelot are crowded for the Walloon procession. Walloons may be celebrating their identity but this is one of Western Europe s poorest of regions. Unemployment is double that in the Flemish North. As politicians try to find a power sharing formula, many in the North would prefer an independent nation of Flanders. Peter Busyrogge of the Flemish Separatist Party pushes for independence: Wallonia and Flanders are two totally different countries. They are two parts of a state but they are completely different cultures . For nationalists, the lack of common values has made today s Belgium obsolete. Will Belgium emerge from this crisis reformed and united or is the divide too deep to bridge?

Hmm... We British allowed the French to live peacefully and have their own language and culture when we took Quebec from the French. They even don't want to join the American rebels during the American war of Independence, preferring to live with the British even if they are enemies during latter stages of the war. Some even join the British army during the Napoleonic war because they were still loyal to the French king and not to the republic nor to Napoleon.
They voted for independence twice back in 1990s and early 2000s butt they lost the vote twice. So the French part still stay in Canada.

Because the French ruling class tought less about their northen brothers. In the past, the main language of Belgium was French. There was no respect for the dutch speaking part of the population, witch they saw as less human. Every time the Flemish people asked for equality and respect it was swept away with repression. It goes on today, but more subtle. For example, the woman in the clip is part of todays problems, she lives in the Flemish part of Belgium but will refuse to speak dutch, or just can't speak it.

I think its a slap on a face from flanders to walloonia. Back in the old days, walloon or frenchies treat dutch speaking people like a peasants. This is because walloonia is rich at that time. Now its payback time (flanders hold 80% of belgium gdp). I personally dont want belgium to break up because its such a beautiful and most interesting country (i also considering to work at there) But, in order to do this y'all belgians need to make a single political system, not six. Also y'all need to learn them language especially frenchie/walloonian (because most of bilingual are flanders). Or y'all can just use english since it a bussiness language (at least thats what my country/regional neighbour were doing)
Also, to people who read this please answer this question,
Why frenchies have the tendency to be very arrogant, very protective about their culture and sometimes very chauvinistic?.
No racism and bigotry intended. I just curious, because from what i read in the internet,(reddit,Quora and etc) most of them refuse to learn other language or culture. For example, u can look at quebec canada. Some of them refuse to speak english eventhough the country is overwhelmingly anglophones. And the reason is because they want to "preserve" the culture and always brings up the history about french colonization to support their points (eventhough british win fair and square)
like what i said before no racism and bigotry intended. I just want to know because it is what it is and i happened to be curious.
PS: Fuck the separatists. I love Belgium.

I am from the french speaking side of Belgium, I think that the people who don’t want to learn dutch because of french cockiness or something like that are a huuuuge minority. We don’t learn the other langage as much because Brussels is technicaly « bilangual » but in fact everybody speaks french but not eveybody speaks dutch there. Also dutch is not very attractive in the way that it’s only spoken on 3 different country (all of them are very small btw) in the world. And finally i think its also because of the education system, in wallonia you have to choose at the age of 9 (approximately) between learning dutch or english, you can’t choose both so a lot of people prefer to choose English over Dutch (just like myself). You can learn the second langage only during highschool in most case!

@@fagar73 Hi, my Walloon fellow countryman. I'm Flemish (et je pourrais faire ceci en français également tu sais) and I agree with what you're pointing out here.
BUT, the problem here is two-dimentional:
      1. To me, being part of a bilingual (mainly, not considering the German-speaking part) country is reason enough to just learn the basics of that language, even though it is only spoken in a few (other) countries. Imagine Estonians refusing to learn Estonian just because it isn't spoken enough world wide... ?
      2. We don't blame you guys for choosing English over Dutch. It's a rational choice and a logic evolution in time: You might need it for computers, technical applications, gaming and so on. But the point is that the Walloon government is not willing to change it, nor is any Walloon politician planning on making such a suggestion very soon. Why is that?
I personally didn't mind learning French (j'ose dire que je le parle presque aussi bien que l'anglais), but year after year Flemish students don't care about French anymore. Why not? Because it's probably as hard as Dutch to you guys, but because those students too are figuring out that not the same efforts are being made... Not to mention all the right wing propaganda in politics at times. Apparantly some are so fed up, that they lose their interest for national pride...
I just want to point out the importance of efforts going both ways. That could really make a difference here in our country. Are Walloon politicians not aware of that, or what?

So the story is good. However what analysts tend to forget is that splitting up Belgium ain't as simple as thought. The constitution has immobilized any return to a united Belgian state like before the changes in 1970. This means that the actual federal constellation is like for ever. Note that the actual federal attribution of powers implies a system of money flows from one region to the other. How are supporters of a divided country gonna get a 3 third majority in parliament to split (read art 3 bis and art 107 quater of the constitution) knowing that we have multiple political parties that do not get along. Within the constitution itself there are procedures to prevent from splitting notably the 'alarmbel'procedure when a linguistic group thinks it is set aside. Tell me how. So de facto splitting up Belgium would first legally dissolute the country in a no mans land. What with the position of the crown? Just tell me. So things are legally much more complicated than the wish expressed by politicians. Many professors in state law at universities agree that Belgian public law is more than incomplete and that it shows holes. Expanding regional powers in the actual federal constellation would only complicate money streams and enhance the existing situation of dependence.
My experience is that on the business plan there is no linguistic problem or whatsoever, business is business. Another experience is that on the long linguistic border in Belgium there is no linguistic problem and that the system of language facilities is not needed . These are the facts. Another fact is that the German speaking region in the east of the country declared itself morally independent from the rest of the country although the residents speak all constitutional fixed languages. Basically they are telling us they have already split.Tell me...Americans coming to live in Belgium all learn the local spoken language of the part they are gonna live in. Fact.

People saying Belgium is an artificial creation are fundamentally WRONG. You do NOT know your history.
The United kingdom of the Netherlands (VKN) was a state created in 1815 as a buffer against france after Napoleon.
The VKN held the entire Benelux under its throne. The king was from Dutch origin and basically abused the heavy industry in Wallonia at that time. The Belgians were also underrepresented in Parliament and had little to say. Also, the Netherlands were protestants, Belgians were Catholic. The Dutch king wanted to make everything protestant, the Belgians absolutely didnt want that.
So one night in Brussels, the Bourgeoisie rallied up the townfolk of Brussels. Soon other cities followed suit and a demand was sent to the King. The Belgians demanded more representation in Parliament and more autonomy. The king refused, hence, the Belgians decided to just f*ck of entirely and declared independence.
Now you know the real story.

    • @ronaldderooij1774
      @ronaldderooij1774 4 роки тому +1

Interesting. That is not what we learn in Dutch schools. I don't know what the truth is, but here is what we learn. The Dutch king wanted a very modern state (industrialise!). Belgium was already industrialised. He wanted the North to follow. He also wanted one language (Dutch) in his kingdom. He wanted to boost northern harbors (wich would cost Antwerpen) because of the Rhine and the hinterland. In the long run, he wanted to forward protestantism. There is no mention of underrepresentation of the south (although I do believe you) and there is no mention of a demand sent to the King. As we learn it, the uprise was sudden, provoked and supported financially and militarily by France, whilst England and Germany refused to step in to defend the treaty of Vienna (which reunited the Netherlands). The Dutch fought a successful 10 day war, but backed down when France intervened militarily and threatened to declare war. England and Germany did not want a new war. So the Netherlands had to leave. France did not want a border with a united Netherlands because it was too strong and too close to Paris. That is hat we in the Netherlands learn. Funny isn't it? So we see Belgium historically as a French project that is just as difficult to manage as when it was a Dutch project.

Also at 7:05 the far right Vlaams Belang nationalists only get about 10% of the votes in recent polls and got 12,28%(-6.70%)in 2010. The nationalist centre-right NVA however got 28,20% in 2010. This video is from 2008.
There are 2 main reasons for Flemish Nationalism: 1 Wallonia costs about 7 billion to 6 million Flemish (12 billion if you account for interests on the national debt that was caused mostly by Wallonia (about 60%)) and 2 Flanders has lost a lot of territory to french-speakers. (Very) Simply put mostly due to bad language education in Wallonian schools.

What do languages have to do with anything? MONEY is all that matters. NB (for sentimental souls) Since the arrival of the first settlers (2500 BC) there has ALWAYS been a link between both parts of what's now Belgium. We can be considered as the oldest country (union, entity) in Europe. Politicians are the ones exploiting language-related issues for keeping their seats. I doubt if anyone knows only one story of hostilities between Walloon and Flemish employers. The people who really matter don't waste time discussing futilities.

Quick example, I was in California (palm springs area) for 2 months this christmas and we were already told on the first day not to go to certain parts when it gets dark. 3 days in America, a massive shooting in a aburtion hospital occured really close to our place, the day after some mecixans got shot (we heard helicopters the entire night). It seems so normal for them that people shoot each other dead on the street that the news just gets reported between the weather and the traffic like it's just a 'normal thing'. It was a silent holocaust that may have happened in a long period of time(50 years. besides I read the entire article you posted above and came across 'the main cause of the population decline was disease . . . ' ). I think what makes the genocide in Rwanda horrific is, it happened in a relatively short period of time(just in a hundred days, an estimated number between 500,000 - 1,000,000 people were killed). the accuracy of the numbers in both cases are disputed by some scholars.
