This is the best example of how industry and science institute can work together to produce technology which India needs. This type of colloberation is very common in Japan and US. Hope this example of Bharat Forge, Tata Advanced System, government and DRDO leads to many such colloberation between industries, National laboratories and academic institutions. My deepest regards to Shri Baba Kalyani and his colleagues to make it happen in India.
I am 80. We used to have chronic failure of a 8" Shaft with shear partly because under high demnd we were using at a point of high load on the frontier. I was in charge of central Engineering for a short time. I looked up the drawing and it said the shaft has to be Aircraft quality. I had an Engineer of IIT metallurgy under me and with him i developed the specification with necessary in process testing protocol.
We approached Bharat forge. One Mr. Mule made it for us the forged shaft. From then on we never had any failure.
Later we modified the coupling system that performed for better than dupont supply.
This was done for RIL PG plant 20 years back.
Obviously Mr. Kalyani is an engineer and it would have been a pleasure to work with him.
But I was elder to him.
The fact we did much more under my small team. Including a Gear box of 23000 rpm output of a single stage air/gas impeller. The original supplier refused to supplier refused to supply citing the difficulties and safety concerns. We took full responsibilities and accomplished.
Got a spinnerette vessel made by Carpenter 255 SS with the help of NISHANI And saved several crores as RiL was expanding massively.
We modified Titanium Rotary drier which break up repeatedly.
There is no dearth of brilliant Engineers in India.
It is a sad reflection we have forgotten real engineers Civil, Military, EME engineers in overalls.
Bharat Forge is doing Great work. Hats off to Baba Kalyani. This is True MAKE IN INDIA. Not so many popping delivery cos Zomato, Swiggy, Ola, Zepto, Dunzo etc..

Everyone is useful especially in the hands of good organizers in the political arena whom we now have
An outstanding visionary, a rooted man with grounded values, patience & a sustained ability to walk the talk. The Defence sector was a political mess involving middle men fixers, arms lobbyists who fixed the beauracratic ,political & regulatory regimes with scandalous levels of corruption. Mr. Kalyani would intimately know the depths of the rot that had set in our system. Yet he plodded on valiantly. Modi and Parrikar fought the system with blunt frontality. The apathy that was shown upto a point even by the men in uniform started thawing and the rest is history in the making. Good luck and cheers to all critical stakeholders .

Great interview. Proud of BF. So sad that after producing Bofors shells in 2003 ,he did not get further orders from Congress government in 10 years.
what else can you expect from the Congress government ? they always banked upon more on the import policy than the indigenization ; particularly so in the defence sector that has put us in the position what we are in today.

its not just the congress. many indians are unfamiliar with self respect. hardly anyone feels ashamed about imported things.
there is blind fascination for imports.
individuals like baba kalyani who strongly wish the country to make things on its own are an example, but one person is not enough.
what is needed is widespread familiarisation with processes of free imagination, reasoning, inquiry, and experimentation that lead to inventing and producing things.
I do recall meeting him and visiting the factory in Pune , on invitation to join as Board officer in 2008 may be. I retired in 2005 as KRly head. We both had similar attitude and work culture. Though I declined to join later, fir own reasons, cannot but admire the wonderful spirit of Shri Baba Kalyani. But for the ecosystem controlled by political and bureaucratic tyrannical killing Indian innovation favouring imports., Persons like him could have changed the India position in defence equipment as no1 in the world by 2010 itself. Shri Narendra Modi is a boon to India and unleashed the power of persons like Baba Kalyani. My heart goes out to him. I see my own image in him .

Sir I am proud of such ambitious and patriotic companies like Bharat forge… Military and Government should show more support and confidence for our own indigenous companies and products, I believe that our country have the best minds in the world and even USA needs to import our people in their institutions to maintain their dominance… I feel so proud whenever I hear or watch the achievements and products of bharat forge and Tata and mahindra etc, these are jewels of our country and should get full support… I am awaiting so eagerly for the orders of ATAGS from our military and govt as I m the manufacturer and as Bharat forge is my own… keep it up sir and keep making us citizens of India proud…

Good luck to you. I have great memories of working in your outstanding organisation in the 80s. Delighted that BF has come a long way.
That said, I also wish that the world becomes a more peaceful place, like it briefly promised to become in the 'Glasnost' era, and the armament market shrinks.
Until that happens, corporates like Bharat Forge will have a vested interest in keeping conflicts alive and growing.
And then, companies like Bharat Forge can invest more in areas that bring real improvement to people's quality of life.

India is one of the major importers of defence equipment to fulfil its demand as per the 21st century. In defence, the major thing is that how much you have firepower as compared to others. Here artillery guns are playing a critical role to establish the force's firepower. From the Mughal's time we have been working with these guns, they were serve as a critical weapon in the army, which gives the surety to win the war,with time passes several modifications we have done to reach longer range than previous one. To achieve the target some Indian companies are step forwarding to roll out with the new technology in front of the nation. After the Kargil war, we realised that guns act as the game-changer for them in the war, at a present example we can see this in Russia - Ukraine war, what kind of role has been played by the artillery guns. The Defence equipment is necessary for the army with consistent modification, in this aspect that should be indigenous than it gives an opportunity to us to build more with new technology, so our country in near future can be becomes as a global exporter of defence equipment rather than an importer.
Great work..hats off to Baba Kalyani. Let's be proud of our wonderful county..and our Prime Minister respected Modiji.

With good indigenous manufacturers of Defense equipment, I am confident now, India will surely progress dramatically in this field and will match or even surpass the best technology available in the world. Recently I came across KALYANI-54 artillery equipment on You-Tube and now when I have seen the promoter of this company an Indian, I really felt very proud of this. 🇮🇳🇮🇳

First of all thank you very much for a very interesting and insightful interview. The person conducting the interview seems to have a good grip on the military hardware and asked very pertinent questions. Thank you Baba Kalyani for your efforts for the country and for being an inspiration to us all. Some interesting facts came out regarding the fire control and aiming system/ computing power that was changed from the Israeli to indigenous Indian was not known to most of us since it was not in the open domain.

Mr Kalyani's narrative is inspiring. The axtors in this story are the PM, the DRDO, the local software developer. and last but not least Mr Kalyani himself who put his money where his mouth is. Kalyani group should Collab with drdo to jointly develop the next gen main battle tank ( currently under development )
Drdo is kinda slow in every way possible be it building tanks, artilleries, drones, technology software every thing.
UNDOUBTEDLY, BFL SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DEVELOP MOST MODERN GUNS WITH SHELLS OF AMMUNITIONS, TESTING AND UPDATING TECHNOLOGY WITH RADAR COUNTER MEASURES.
