I don't get why people were so mad about this. Yes he fell, but this team way superior compared to Lobacheva and Averbukh. The real outrage was how Lobacheva and Averbukh made the podium...
When I was a child, I felt in love for Maurizio, reason which I never noticed before he was a weak skater and Barbara always did the job, improved and performed. Maurizio was slow and a two footed dancer, the contrast today highlights him in a terrible way 😨
How could someone prefer Maurizio over Gwendal? ))))) P.s. but it almost always in this sport, that one of the partners is much stronger than another. For me there was 2 exceptions from this rule- Torvill & Dean and Anissina & Peizerat
@@MsRumex Maurizio corresponds to my taste in men 😂 And when I was little, I didn't know anything about ice dance. In the other hand, I prefer Marina & Gwendal as dancers (Gwendal is incredibly handsome too!) and their programs are still stunning to watch.
"was slow and a two footed dancer" - This is true for most male dancers in ice dancing, I think. Their job is to support & lift the partner, while the female usually flies around the rink. I think he was quite good, Barbara does the flashy work but she wouldn't be able to do so without his support. They wouldn't be world champions if he weren't good. (I was a huge fan of Anissina & Peizerat but I still appreciate the quality of these two here, they were awesome skaters, both of them).
@@memandi2 yes and no. Sure, male dancer has to support female while she is doing a lot of things, so no one expect him to do it on one feet. BUT, during step sequences both of them SHOULD be doing equally difficult steps (and it never was the case with those two).
@@memandi2 Partially true. Most of the skaters are supporters of ladies but still have to try to match the level of quality in foot work and difficulties with it. Unfortunately, Maurizio Margaglio had no enough skills to match Barbara. His egdes were always poor, with no flow or precision. He had problems to keep speed and timing, his twizzles always were unbalanced and tended to be sloppy in faster dances (excepting quickstep and foxtrot, it has to be admitted). Also, look at his way to spin, not so refine. Fortunately, he's a good coach and choreographer now so, we can realize that he has learned so much about technique.

Seriously the Ice dance couples at that time were really a mess so was the judging too especially at SLC with atrocious programs, falls and mistakes except for the French and the Lithuanian Ice dance couples. Anyone with eyes could see that at that time Anissina and Peizerat were in the league of their own they were favourites to win the Gold their flamenco OD was a masterpiece and one of the best OD of all time, the rest of the teams were just fighting for Silver and Bronze. I remember commentators at that time saying the French team deserved to win the Gold and their placement was right but the rest of the teams placements were questionable like the Italian team getting Bronze with mistake on OD and fall on FD instead of the Lithuanian team who skated better and clean programs and who many thought deserved to win the bronze.
Efectivamente. Ese año olímpico. Fue desastroso. Los lituanos fueron menospreciados de nueva cuenta. Ellos merecían y por mucho el Tercer lugar. Incluso los canadienses cayeron ambos competidores.
@@rafearcher7882 Barbara explained in an interview that they wanted a dramatic program, as they won everything the year before with that style with Romeo & Juliet, but judges suggested a more fun program for the free dance. It was a shady call cause the other top teams all did dramatic in Salt Lake regardless.
@@simtopia2334 their Celtic program from 2000 wasn't dramatic, yet it was very good. And actually, this fun style suited them usually. But this particular one just did not work for them at all.
They would have done kind of the same or even put Lobacheva/Averbukh behind them in 3rd. Now imagine a 2nd place at the Olympics for a program like that, just imagine it! The imagination itself is scary enough. But so is their 3rd place.
They were coming in as the reigning champion of everything, and weren't they first after the Original Dance or compulsory? they'd have either won or finished second. But with that fall there was also the risk of not being on the podium.
@@simtopia2334 no, they did not win the original dance (the french team won it, Russian were second). The same place ordinal was after compulsory dances, however, I don't think that the Russian team deserved to be second. In fact, I liked Italian, Canadian and Lithuanian compulsories better.
If the judges were really shameless than the Italians would have placed 1st which would have been the most ridiculous result in Ice dance history lol but nway I think Anissina and Peizerat would have still won, the italians would have placed 2nd and the Russians would have placed 3rd or the Canadians but who knows.
so so so so overscored...even without mistake they didn t deserve this kind of marks... for me 5.3 and 5.6. and on the free programm 1st france 5.8 5.9 2nd lithuania 5.7 5.9 3rd russia 5.6 5.8 4th israel 5.6 5.7 5th canada 5.4 5.6 6th italy 5.3 5.6.

I believe that was at the root of the whole pairs scandal! French judge gives the Russians the pairs gold, in exchange for Russia’s support of the ‘French’ pair, the better half of which was Russian.
@@theknitwit7098 I remember how it was, but this second half about ice dancing always looked a bit shaky, especially if you take into consideration who was the coach of Russian team A\L and why did Anisina end up representing France. And yes, in the end russian judge voted (predictably) for russian team.....
all this years later it looks as though italian and russian fedarations had some deals going on (and the main one was not to let french get the gold) (imho).....
OMG !! Bad bad bad .....Whithout PRESIDENT ISU Cinquenta no medal for this bad couple Margaglio was so bad but the mask falls when he fall down and all his mediocrity is obvious what a scandal that the worst skater in the world is tolerated in the last group, it's a shame.. This guy has always skated on two feet and when he tried one in 2002 and 2006 he fell like a big dung
Ice dancing competition in SLC was so disappointing. A/P deservedly won as they were the far superior couple of the bunch, but while their OD was excellent, their FD was utterly forgettable, surely not up to the level of their 98-01 free programs (ranging from very good to awesome). It is mind-boggling to think that 4 out of 9 judges had L/A winning the FD and the gold medal though. I'd have put D/Z above F-P/M and B/K in the free dance, but while their programs were very good presentation-wise their speed was not up to par with the top teams. As for F-P/M, the problem was always the same: a clear mismatch between F-P (arguably the best ice dancer of the whole lot) and her partner (with obvious technical weaknesses). They were saved by the fall of B-K on the last lift, and they can thank their God for that.
Barbara always skated for two of them!!
Per me resterà sempre la coppia più bella del pattinaggio artistico sul ghiaccio ❤️

I never understood why all the men had long hair.... like, literally didn't get it.
