Well said! Non-cyclists are always surprised when I tell them about the team element of the sport. Usually think they think it's as individually-based as skiing or speed-skating.
You can be great at anything you put your mind too & stay dedicated. If you are also willing to take advantage of doping substances over riders on placebo's, you can be even greater, as the workloads on the body are far easier to overcome. I've tested the substances Merckx rode on... I cut 15 minutes off my 50 mile time.
This is real. They definitely took drinks from shops, there's a video of Eddy Merckx talking with Stuart O'grady about differences in nutrition then and now and he mentions this when Stuart asks him about how much fluids they drank(no where near as much apparently)
1+ (apart from the insult of course). at the Herne Hill velodomes in London during a track day, the rider who won an events have in fact, a really heavy steel bicycle (Charge Plug), in constract to the light steel, alu, even carbon track bicycle that are ridden by other. not about the bike, just the rider.
You can't seriously believe that if we all took performance enhancing drugs that we could even make it onto a pro tour team, let alone be as dominant as Merckx...
I don't know what you're trying to say(I just read this one comment of yours), but are you implying that Merckx would stand no change against the great cyclists of today? I hope that's not what you're saying bc for examply Eddy Merckx world hour record is hard to break even for cyclists today. And yes todays equipment isn't lighter, but it's better then 30 years ago... Especially for time trials... Do you know what happened in tour de france 1989? Lemond won by 8 seconds because of better
