Great video and work
Any excuse to buy a new tool is good. Congrats. Great work on the boxes. Really nice
This video sparked my interest because im going to be doing a butterfly bandsaw box next week. I saw you did drawers different than i was thinking. I noticed the butterfly wasn't really featured in this video. Great job though love the video.
I love the design ideas, thanks for offering free plans.
I like your wood choices, so nice. On my bandsaw boxes I also started added flocking to the insides of the drawer and the outer box after routing the edges round. I also used blue tape over the edges before flocking, which made a very nice sharp line. EXACTLY like you did it!
Thank you very much! That is how I was taught to do it for jewelry box drawers so I figured the same principle apples here. Works great!
Good
really good thanks for sharing . Looking forward to having a go at making a box
Nice thanks for the share
They're beautiful. As for the wood, I like the paduk and purple heart. I'm a cat person, so I like the cat box.
Come on CAT getup in the mic and tell us what you think..... Great work guys, I love it when my wife works with me in the garage.
Your video has great stuff I haven't seen elsewhere like gluing the wood together and tips on using the band saw!
My husband has made several boxes, he lines his with felt. You did a great job on yours, they do take a long time to make these
I’ve seen several that use felt instead of the Flocking. And yes, there is A Lot of sanding.
I have the same Cutech jointer, I love it.
I love mine also. I have outgrown it but it’s awesome. I’ve heard that they went downhill after Wahuda bought them out but I don’t know personally.
Awesome job Michael and Kat!! I can’t wait to do my first Bandsaw box!! You two did an amazing job on them!!
Smithson Creations Handcrafted Woodworking thank you Shaun. It’s a lot of fun.
Kat knows her way around a bandsaw, last night I made my first Bandsaw box out of a mesquite log that was cut down in a neighbors yard. Mine was Avery simple design for my wife’s niece that turned 8 years old today. I wish I had seen this video before last night I would have made the Cat version. Last year I bought a Grizzly 17 inch 2 hp band saw with the brake, the brake is really nice, years ago I owned a delta 14 inch on a riser block for resaw work. This the Grizzly is night and day from the Delta.
Wow very nice! Suggestion: this is what I do, I put Blue painters tape on the project then spray the adhesive on the tape then place the pattern on the tape.
Question I used Watco Danish oil on a project following the directions in a 75 degree shop with AC on, the after third application of Danish oil it became tacky. It stayed Tack for over a week. I just sanded it off and used something else. What went wrong any ideas?
Oh I used a 1/8 inch 10 TPI blade last night what did you use? Thanks guys Beautiful work both of you.😁🛫
The tacky part: Two things off the top of my head. First, the humidity level was too high and you probably should have waited longer between coats. Often you can wipe it off the same you would if it was stain and that will help. Second, the wood may have taken all it could and the last bit stayed on the surface and dried. Again wiping after applying like stain could help with that.
I also used a 1/8” 10 tpi blade. Yes Kat is very good with a band saw. I think if I ever get a scroll saw she will become more efficient with it than I will. Because she quilts she has more experience with that motion.
I make a LOT of bandsaw boxes and for your first time you did a REALLY, REALLY good job. I suggest breaking all the edges around the drawers and box exterior to improve feel and appearance. Also consider investing in an oscillating spindle sander to help reduce the hand sanding. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for sharing this video, I found it really helpful, I’m about to make one to sell in a charity auction.
Glad I could help. Be sure and share pics of your box on our Facebook page.
Thank you for sharing,
Learned a lot from your video,
I'll be making my first bandsaw box soon.
That’s awesome. Good luck with it and if I can be of any assistance feel free to reach out.
Parabéns amigo Eu só do Brasil e adimirados das artes e gostou muito de seus vidios e as suas Artes São linda e bem trabalhadas 👌👌👌🦋
Very fine work guys, My first one was not as good as yours, was too anxious to see it finished, keywords, take your time and it'll turn out fine.
Brian Shaw thank you. Very good advice. I have had that issue in the past. I got in a hurry to see the final product that I forgot several steps and completely messed the whole thing up.
Hello my new friend. you are doing very good work. A great design. You are a good master. I'm watching you with admiration. This is a great jewelry box. you are doing a good job. I watched with curiosity. Congratulations. I made my first try. I am considering publishing this weekend. But you are a really good master. Thank you for sharing. Warm hug. Great greetings. Yours truly.....
he marvellous ,super tank's for sharing no need for belt sander lol your impression on your new band saw?looking to bey a smaller saw salut!!!!!
charles merrifield haha thank you. I love the new band saw. I have been very impressed with the quality of Rikon tools. I have no complaints.
That’s the lousiest excuse I ever heard to buy a new band saw. If she went for that you have a blank check my friend. !! Good job.
Michael how do you like that cutech jointer. I have the same one and like it alot, only issue is the table scratches really easy you have to keep it waxed. I like the video, been making bandsaw boxes for a while and they are alot of fun but a ton of sanding. keep up the great videos and happy woodworking.
Thank you very much. I love the Cutech jointer. I think the bed scratching and needing to be waxed is an issue with any jointer. My only concern at the moment with it is that I think it is too small for my needs anymore. Looking at upgrading it and my planer soon. Yes, bandsaw boxes are A LOT of sanding lol.
Really enjoyed the video, I’m just learning to do bandsaw boxes.
Thanks for the layouts for the boxes. How do you like your jointer?Really nice boxes. Thanks again
Thank you. The jointer works very well. I wish I had gotten the 8” model and I am looking at upgrading it soon because I have outgrown it. Other than that I am very happy with it.
CA Glue funny story back in the early 80’s I worked on Medical Ultra Sound equipment, I was at a hospital and had to temporarily repair a plastic part using baking soda and CA glue. You guessed I got the CA glue between my index finger and my thumb not knowing it until I went to release the part I was holding. Rut Ro!!! I was stuck, the rad tech came in to check on me and I explained my problem, what I did not tell you was the ultra sound probe cable was in between my thumb and index finger the good new I could disconnect the probe from the rest of the equipment but the plug on the cable was too big to pass between my thumb and my index finger. Down to ER we went. The Doctor did not know about the acetone trick as CA glue was just beginning to show up on the consumer market. He suggested I wait a few days in the mean time soak my fingers in salty water.
I said I can’t do that for two reasons one the hospital needs the Ultra sound machine back up and running as it was in the OBGYN Department.
And I had to fly the airplane home that night and that was not going to be fun with out fingers to turn knobs with. (the company provided us airplanes to fly, if you were a pilot and I was, if you were not they would teach you to fly. I could cover a large area and be home most nights, it was great not having to deal with the airlines)
Back to the ER,
So out comes a scalpel, I Lost some skin on that trip but got a lot of ribbing from my other coworkers from then on it was surgical gloves after all I was always at a medical facility 🛫
Haha I became a paramedic right after high school. We always had a can of acetone on the truck. You would not believe the number of people that would get themselves stuck and call an ambulance.
Your boxes are gorgeous. Two questions:
Can you show us how you made the little pyramid stands you had the boxes drying on after you oiled them?
What exactly is the purpose of the flocking?
I didn’t make those. They are painters pyramids. You can get them almost anywhere that sells paint. The purpose of the flocking (in my opinion) is just to make it a little prettier. It also helps hide any imperfections on the inside. I don’t think it really adds any protection other than maybe preventing whatever you put in it from scratching the box and vice versa.
Nice vid.. Thanks..I have to ask why outside on deck? Maybe I missed that..I just got a 14" Grizzly G0555lx so I will be trying this as soon as I get some wood glued up! Thanks again..good luck w your channel!
Lol. Yeah that was explained in my very first video. I don’t have a garage and my basement is too short for me at 6’5”. So I am making do until we can get a shop built.
They look Great, I look forward to making my first band saw boxes and thank you for the templates. I do have a band saw but unsure of the right blade to use for these boxes, do you mind sharing what blades you used and any other advice for this beginner?
Hi and thanks for the kind words. We used a 3/16 blade for the curved and cut outs. If your bandsaw can handle it I would suggest a 1/8” blade. Some saws won’t accept one that small. Also, I would practice on scrap wood until you get the hang of the movement you need to get a good cut and not twist or bind the blade. Also, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. In the end enjoy the process and have fun.
@@mkdesignsfinewoodworkingThank you, you are very kind, I appreciate the advice
No worries. Feel free to reach out anytime. I may not be able to get back immediately but I will do my best to respond quickly.
Muy hermosos proyectos de maderitas son geniales, que tipo de aceite usa ?. Gracias por compartir un calido saludo.
¡Muchas gracias! Usé Watco Danish Oil en estos. Estoy muy contento de que lo hayas disfrutado.
Should of showd backing out the saw blade
Great video, I really enjoyed it... what size and type blade was you using?
@@mkdesignsfinewoodworking I've been making a box for the first time the last few days and have it glued and the outside shape done, first time using a bandsaw, i understand now why i found it difficult with the curves and had to keep backing up. So glad you posted this because if i had not watched it i'd have made a mess of the drawers....Amazon here i come i guess. You're such a cute couple btw, you look like you both have a wonderful time working together!
How wide is the bandsaw blade when you cut off the back of the cat box ? Good video.
We used the same 3/16 blade that we used for cutting everything else. Honestly the only reason was because we didn’t want to change the blade multiple times otherwise we would have used a 5/8 or 3/4 blade.
Beautiful! Really learned from your video, appreciate it! Just curious, if you were to sell these, like on etsy or other method, considering the time it takes, what would you price them at? Now off to get a bandsaw!!
Thank you. Pricing depends on a few factors. Material, design, and complexity. The are in which you’re selling also plays into it. A simple bandsaw box could sell for $50-$75. A more complex one can go for $500-$600. These particular ones I would sell for around $150. A good rule of thumb is to start with a flat rate. I typically start with (material x 3). So if material costs $50 I would sell for $150. Then adjust from there depending on what I think people would pay for it. Hope that helps.
@@mkdesignsfinewoodworking Great info and advice! Thanks again and Happy New Year!!
Love the bandsaw boxes do you send them through email or can you just print them out?
I believe once you order them you can download them and print them out. My store’s platform handles that part of it. If you have trouble with it feel free to email me and I will try to help.
queria poder fabricar vocês vende o desenho
Where did you get the triangle stands that you use?
They are painter’s tripods. You can get them at any big box store in the paint department. They come in packs of usually 10 for around $7.
Where did you get the patterns?
I created them with photoshop from pictures we found on the internet.
I am happy for you guys. The boxes came out nice
Thank you very much!
