"Slow irregular Throbbing" would be a great name for a Throbbing Gristle jazz cover band.

The Tape Play and Rec jacks on the CX decoder are for being able to decode a tape copy of a CX-encoded LP and to record the decoded output of LP playback to tape, not to serve as a CX encoder for tape recording. CX encoders were never sold to the general public, as CBS intended it to be a strictly playback-only system. And the amount of noise reduction on LaserDisc and CED version of CX was reduced from 20 to 14 dB, so that's another reason why a LaserDisc CX decoder can't be used with CX-encoded records.

I'm pretty sure that for every consumer music format there was a failed compander system that tried to make music "sound better", with limited results (remember HDCD? That one has to be the most baffling)
Fun fact, Herbie Hancock plays Electric piano on the first track of that Terumasa Hino album

I love how John Roberts was able to fill in the missing details. It's rare to be able to speak to original sources from 40+ years ago and get the information needed.

It was an interesting idea in concept, but execution was not there. I know I have seen the albums but never got one. Between you and Techmoan I now am glad I did not. Have a great summer

CX had a follow-up that was a much more successful noise-reduction system: CD.
Oddly enough, the problems flipped: With CX, the engineers and producers cared too much about the loss of dynamic range on a limited medium. With CD, they had all the range they could ever want, and abused the dynamics intentionally. Go figure, huh?

I think Ben and Techmoan need to do a big collab, maybe work Clint from LGR in there somewhere. That would be an epic video. Love the stuff man, the nostalgia of everything. Keep up the amazing work and good luck with the next season.

I totally get what you mean about Dolby B. I remember trying to replicate the decode process on a Dynamic EQ plugin and I actually got better results than the decoder built into my cassette deck

Dang! $50 bucks to ship less than 3.5 pounds only to the next country, Canadia? And dang! That piggybacking chip setup is genius. Reminds me of me chipping my PlayStation1 back in 2001 so I could play * AHEM* "backups" and other region locked games on it. I was younger and more adventurous back then.

New subscriber. Have you done anything on AM stereo? I'm a big supporter. To the point I own both receivers, and a transmitter for C-quam. There is a nearby station that is using that technology. There are others across the US, and the world. Not a lot, but they do exist.

Are we talking the analog AM Stereo or HD AM? I remember that my dad actually had one of those rare cars that came with the analog version of the 90s. It was impressive. Not quite FM quality but the additional sound separation made it sound way better than standard mono. Digital AM is even better with near FM quality in the sound. The only station that I can receive where I live is not quite strong enough to maintain a digital signal, but this helps to compare the difference in sound and boy is the difference dramatic! Ben, I know someone who did some audio archiving of analog AM stereo if you need someone with examples of it.

@@OddityArchive Great. Thank you. I'm going through your older stuff right now. I watched more than a couple of your videos, when they came out at the time. Liked, but didn't subscribe because it's rare I do.
We have a lot of common interests. I also own a few Ramsey transmitters, and a Blonder Tongue converter. My family rented an ON TV decoder in that day, and I eventually built a few of my own. First ON, for L.A., then Z, moved north and RX HBO.

Funny, because my ears are now so old, and one is not working so well anymore (75% deaf in left,) I cannot hear any difference in the sound quality. It sounds exactly the same. Terrible. Yet, I can still tell the difference between Dolby and non as Dolby to me sounds like someone has put a pillow over the speakers.
Just to say, when Ben says he's taking time off, no, he doesn't! He still works like a Trojan on videos, just different content. Looking forward to Serge's return. I hope this year we can get some CX/DBX encoded Serge. Or maybe even some Dolby Serge? But I very much doubt it. Have fun on your "Time Off," Ben. Looking forward to your new season. I hope Max makes a welcome return.

It's my understanding that the tape monitor switches on gear like this (and the multiband EQ i have here) are so that you can insert the unit into your stereo/amp via the amp's tape input/output... this lets you piggyback your actual tapedeck onto it so you don't lose the ability to dub to tapes...

  • @snowcraft40

I agree with you about Dolby noise reduction. To me it sounds like it filters the top end out reducing the hiss, and loosing some of that crisp sounding treble. I have two Pioneer Tape Decks. They both have Dolby B and C but I never use it. I never felt like I needed to. Great video dude. Thanks.

If one were to create a noise reduction system that didn't need to be back-compatible, would it have been possible to improve the quality of venial OR make it cheaper to create great quality venial?

Could this be reversed without the hardware? I picked up a copy of Claude Bolling's Toot Suite that I found out was a CX disc.
BTW, LaserDiscs have had CX right from the beginning. It was not a recent development; it was built into the spec, and it did really well.

If you REALLY have a Dolby B (or C) encoded tape, you MUST play it back with whatever Dolby NR the tape was recorded at. If, say, you play back a Dolby B-encoded tape w/o Dolby B decoding, you are getting compressed and overly-bright audio. That's what Dolby "eq' does. It's kinda like the RIAA curve.

+Oddity Archive; I'm confused. You pronounced 'linear' (10:26) as 'LYNN-ear', and you ALSO were (MIS)pronouncing Phase Linear as 'LYNN-ear' (4:47), when the word - and the company's name are pronounced, 'lynn-EEE-uhr'.
I know you're a very knowledgeable person, and at first, I was wondering whether this was a 'regional' pronounciation, so I wanted to ask.
