Hot Water Shower System - Heat Exchanger - Van Life Build

  • In this video I install a Glind Heat Exchanger. This uses your coolant system to heat water for a shower or sink. I am using mine to heat water for showers when I am on the trail. I also install a CVT Shower Awning. I like this system because it is integrated into the van build and I don't have to store extra components like the hot water heater that I used before.

    I installed my heat exchanger by taping into the the cars heater hoses then you can controls the water temp by moving the temperature control of the cars heater

      Another advantage your set-up, is that since the heater system typically bypasses the thermostat, and blocks retain a good bit of heat, one can get hot water for quite some time after shutting down the engine. Of course, operation after shut down requires a separate circulation pump.

    Another pump you can try is an rv water pump they have built in pressure monitor valve
    It can shut off or run slower depending on output
    Mount it next to heate exchanger

      I do have a internal RV pump for my van in house water needs that is hooked to my 7 gallon inside water tank, but I didn’t want to pull from that water source for my showers. The Joocla pump does have a pressure on and off built in and being external I can take it to the water source which is really convenient.

Other guys just drop their truck off and a video later, out it rolls with 150K worth of improvements. Not you, you work alongside or follow them step by step. You have an intimate knowledge of how your vehicle and sub-systems work and will repair them yourself. That shows the sincerity of your lifestyle.

    Now, like your LP tank, you need a small insulated hot water tank tucked up under the van. Have the system circulate while you drive and you’ll have hot water in the tank ready to go for shower or washing dishes. Of course, if there’s no room and it affects your cleanse, is there room inside the van for the tank? Ahh heck, it looks like it works fine as is…. Fun project. Thanks for sharing.

      @@PrimalOutdoors Ok, I understand. I guess it’s still easier to run the engine than to say boil 5 gallons in of water using your Propane and poring that into a jug or just drawing out of big pot. Probably burn less Diesel and you have more of it than Propane. Can’t remember. Was your plan to run the pump, fill a 5 gallon jug, then recycle that using heater with van running until it was up to temp, turn engine off and pump out of jug for shower? Or were you just going to go directly from cold water source through heat exchanger to shower head? Navy type shower with on and off shower head could result in extreme heated water with each initial turn back on of the water. If you keep the water flowing, I thought you were not happy with the temperature out of heat exchanger? Really going to enjoy seeing what works for “you”. Thanks for sharing the build and experiments along the way.

    Hi mate, Recently i had a heat exchanger for my transmission, i replaced it with a dedicated radiator for the oil from the transmission as ford made it so complicated as it also connected to a thermostat housing that was plastic, so i put a bypass hose on that but this gives me an idea to salvage that heat exchanger as it was just going to sit on a shelf, its full aluminum design and works well.

    That’s a awesome set up Jason. Have you checked into transfer flow tanks in Chico ca they make and install custom gas and fuel tanks for in-bed and under body replacing the factory tank with a larger tank. I have a 42 gal in bed-combination toolbox fuel tank. My neighbor got a factory replacement for his short bed f250 adding an additional 30 gal of fuel. Great local company really friendly staff. Would make the long trips maybe a little less worrisome not having to do many fuel ups. Thanks for the video

    I've been debating between this and a portable propane water heating system. Right now I'm leaning towards the propane heating system only for the fact that I don't have to run my rig to get hot water. It's a bulkier system for sure but if you want hot water first thing in the morning you don't need to worry about waking other people up with a running vehicle. It's more on demand. An idea for you though, tuck a pressure regulated self priming pump under the hood, that way you can have the pump shut off after your shower and not worry about the pump burning out and it's even more compact. All you have to do is move a jug to the front of your rig and drop the hose into it, turn it on and bam you're all setup for hot water

    Cool install. I wonder if the long heater hose you added is limiting the coolant flow through the heat exchanger. It's can be surprising how added length of a hose can restrict flow. It would be interesting to know the temperature of the coolant into and out of the heat exchanger. If there is a large drop in temp, that might tell you that more coolant flow would help. It will also be interesting to know if the longer hose effects your vans heater effeteness.

    That's a very interesting shower set up. My experience with shooting a laser thermometer into a silver bowl (reflective surface) is that the reading is not accurate at all. I have gotten low readings with this method.
    Edit: I confirmed this by using a probe type thermometer at the same time as the laser.

    • @marcericdavis
      @marcericdavis 2 роки тому +1

      IR thermal sensors will read the temperature of the reflection on a shiny surface. They are really only accurate looking at a matt black object. This becomes really clear when you use an IR camera. You can "see" the reflection of hotter and cooler objects in many surfaces.

    • @keithbrookshire
      @keithbrookshire 2 роки тому

      @@marcericdavis To support your observation: I bought an Amazon Basics IR thermometer on sale for, I think, $15. I wasn't expecting much but I like to have one for each of my grills. It's the best IR thermometer I own. It even cane with "offset adjustments" for taking readings from various surfaces.

  • @dx9s
    @dx9s 11 місяців тому

    @0:35 you mentioned running the hot and cold fluids in the same direction through the heat exchanger? For max heat exchange, run them in opposite directions. Imagine this, you have hot and cold fluids entering into exchanger at the same end and a 'infinitely' long-enough exchanger, both outlets fluids will be the ruffly the same temperature coming out somewhere between the hot and cold temps based on the ratio of water flowing (volume/time, i.e. CFM) on each side. For one fluid path, flip the direction and the same "long-enough" exchanger, and the temps still be closer to each other but one end will have hotter fluids and the other end will have cooler fluids with an increase in heat exchanged between the two fluids. For heat exchangers, the greater the temperature delta the greater the heat exchange efficiency (one of the rules in thermal dynamics)... translation: raising or lowering 20 degrees is easier than raising/lowering 2 degrees. Make sure you are running the fluids in opposite directions in your heat exchanger.

    I was really curious how the heat exchanger would work. I was surprised it didn't heat it more than it did but I guess that joolca is running the water through pretty quick. I used the joolca at Overland Expo and discovered I could go through 5 gal pretty quick. Is 5 gal the size of that water canister you were using? Just curious. I got through my shower but just barely. I did waste some while I was setting it up and testing so I probably took a shower on 4gal but just curious how you managed that. running out in the middle would really stink LOL.

    I've been thinking about a simple recirculating outdoor shower set up. I good way to shower just using water from a stream instead of hauling all that water and you get almost unlimited hot showers. A heat exchanger like that could work well for my idea.

  • @tall14dude

    If you reduce the flow rate coming out, it will heat up more. I do this with homebrewing when cooling the wort from boiling to 70F. The faster the liquid moves through the coil, the less heat it can absorb ( or in my case dissipate).

      The heat exchanger solution is slow, but a lot less fuss to deal with IMO when installing. You will need 2 lengthy hoses, one from the water tank to the motor compartment, and one back to your kitchen/shower. Propane needs a tank, proper gas hoses, extra safety measures, and needs to be refilled separately, but it will provide warm water 'instantly'.
