- THE HISTORY OF THE SAN SIRO, OR THE STADIO GIUSEPPE MEAZZA SINCE IT WAS BUILT IN 1925/26
Stadio San Siro was a project of former AC Milan president Piero Pirelli. In the first two decades of the 20th century, Milan had already occupied various grounds, and by the early 1920s played at a ground at the Viale Lombardia.
Though a perfectly fine ground, it soon turned out to be too small for the club’s growing number of fans, and therefore architect Stacchini, also responsible for Milan’s central station, was hired to design a complete new stadium.
Stadio San Siro officially opened on 19 September 1926 with a friendly between Milan and Inter (3-6). The stadium initially consisted of four separate stands and could hold 35,000 spectators.
San Siro was first owned by AC Milan, but was sold to the city of Milan in 1935, who were soon forced too enlarge the stadium due to the club’s increasing popularity.
Plans were made for a massive stadium for 150,000 spectators, but these were in the end significantly scaled down. The redeveloped San Siro opened in 1939, and consisted of one fully enclosed tier.
Until 1945, Milan had been the sole occupant of San Siro, but were then joined by Inter, who had before played at the Arena Civica.
San Siro got further expanded in 1955 when a second tier got built on top of the first one, which resulted in a capacity of about 85,000 places.
In the following decades, San Siro hosted two European Cup finals: the first in 1965 between Inter and Benfica (1-0), and the second in 1970 between Feyenoord and Celtic (2-1).
The stadium had earlier gotten ignored as a playing venue for the 1968 European Championships, but did get selected for Euro 1980. At the same time it got officially renamed Stadio Guiseppe Meazza, in honour of the ex-player of both Inter and Milan.
During the 1980 European championships, San Siro hosted three first round group matches.
Soon after, Italy got awarded the 1990 World Cup, and it became clear that San Siro was in need of a major upgrade. The option of building a new stadium was contemplated, but architects Ragazzi, Hoffer, and Finzi instead chose for an ambitious redevelopment plan.
Works included the construction of a third tier, a roof that would cover all seats, and eleven cylindrical concrete towers around the stadium to support the extra tier and roof structure. The resulting capacity was 85,700 seats.
During the World Cup, San Siro hosted the opening match between Argentina and Cameroon (0-1), three further group matches, a round of 16 match, and the quarter-final between Germany FR and Czechoslovakia (1-0).
The stadium got further refurbished in later years, and capacity reduced slightly due to UEFA safety requirements. In 2001, it hosted the Champions League final between Bayern München and Valencia (1-1) and in 2016 the final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid (1-1).
Both Milan and Inter have looked at building a new stadium elsewhere, having found themselves constrained in their development due to the deteriorated state of the stadium and ownership by the city of Milan. Inter was the first to announce plans to build a new club-owned stadium in 2012, but shelved these when Milan revealed concrete plans to build a new stadium in the Portello area, instead opting to renovate San Siro. However, Milan’s move fell through in 2015 and future plans of both clubs are currently unclear.

Al di là dei giudizi estetici, soggettivi, il 3° anello ha aumentato la capienza e soprattutto ha consentito l'installazione della copertura. Il problema del prato si è avvertito in particolare nei primi anni perché, essendo cambiato il microclima, non si sapeva come gestirlo, ma oggi come oggi è ampiamente risolto anche grazie alla mescola tra erba naturale e sintetica.
@@crimarzor ci hanno combattuto per anni con le zolle di San Siro. Erano diventate una barzelletta. Il San Siro che ricordo io era magico. Certo, hanno fatto la tribuna sciuri e la copertura, ma non è più come allora. La gente che va allo stadio è diminuita, secondo me potrebbero anche toglierlo ora.

La mia prima partita al "Meazza" risale al 1986, quindi anche io ricordo con affetto lo stadio a due anelli. Ciò non toglie che, obiettivamente, avere "un tetto sopra la testa" che ti protegge dalle intemperie è un vantaggio notevole, e una città come MIlano (unica in Europa a vantare due squadre vincitrici della Coppa dei Campioni) più che ridurre la capienza accettando implicitamente un ridimensionamento, dovrebbe rimboccarsi le maniche per restituire Inter e Milan al ruolo che loro compete, in modo da attirare nuovamente folle oceaniche sugli spalti della Scala del Calcio.

Per noi Milanisti rimarrà sempre e solo San Siro, visto che dal 1979 venne rinominato Giuseppe Meazza, giocatore storico dell’Inter e, per soli due anni, a fine carriera, anche del Milan. In pochi anni l’Inter ha rinominato stadio, Piazzale dello stadio e giardinetti dietro lo stadio. Ma nonostante tutto, i nerazzurri rimarranno sempre gli ospiti sgraditi. Che vadano a giocare a Pioltello.

The possible demolition of one of the greatest sport monuments would be a sacrilege in football. Both clubs should buy San Siro (I would even take in consideration the idea that the mayor of Milan to give them the stadium for free, only to be saved), modernize it and reorganize its surroundings. They should expand it to 90.000 seats (building the third level on the east side), change the color of the seats and cover the stadium on the outside like Allianz Arena, with a futuristic shape and with a roof supported by the four towers. With inspired architects around, the whole project would look amazing and would cost less than building a mediocre stadium that would replace this majestic work of architecture. In this way, this masterpiece could be saved. Real and Barça have some wonderful plans for the renovation of their stadiums.

Bel video, complimenti! Solo una piccola precisazione: l'immagine a 0:50 non è degli anni '30, come erroneamente segnalato in sovrimpressione, bensì degli anni '50. Negli anni '30 le tribune delle curve erano più basse, e non vi erano i raccordi con le tribune centrali, cose invece presenti nella foto.Solo alla fine degli anni '30, 1938-39 si incominciarono i lavori di ampliamento delle tribune delle curve. Inoltre, in alto a sinistra, è ospitato un cartellone pubblicitario della Nicolet Watch, ditta svizzera di orologi che negli anni '30 era ancora solo a carattere eminentemente regionale. D'altronde impensabile che potesse esserci durante il periodo fascista, considerata l'autarchia vigente, e, per concludere, il divieto di parole straniere.

This is truly a marvelous stadium but for the life of me I simply cannot understand why the third tier ring never continued completely around the whole stadium behind the scoreboard?? The stadium would look much more complete if this was done. There must be a valid reason for this? If anyone has the answer I am all ears!
It was impossible to complete the whole third ring due to technical reasons. The Trotting hippodrome was too near to let raise the structures of the third ring also on that side

L'Inter deve aver il suo stadio, il Meazza ormai è stato infettato dalla Serie B per colpa dei due anni del BBilan.
Guarda, rispondo serenamente, io rimetterei la firma per altri due anni in Serie B per poi vincere 7 Champions League e altrettanti trofei, piuttosto che essere da sempre in Serie A ed aver vinto meno sia della Juventus che del Milan. #eterniterzi

È stato costruito dal signor Pirelli al tempo presidente del Milan. Fino a che non è stata ceduta la gestione al comune lo sfinter giocava nel campetto della promozione.
