As someone with DID and ZERO patience for “evil split personality” ignorance lately, I’m gonna tap out at the little summary you started with. But I’m leaving a comment for engagement! Ps- to anyone curious, real DID is nothing like the theatrical representations one might find in “United States of Tara,” on social media, in horror, etc. In reality, DID is far more mundane and boring than it’s often portrayed. To the average outside observer, it’s less 15 different elaborate outfits & accents and more having a bad memory and being extremely tired.
I think that’s a smart choice because this books rep was terrible. I tried to make jokes and make it somewhat enjoyable but for someone who actually has DID I doubt it would help dilute the stupidity. 🩷
@@johnynoway9127 the reality for me is mundane, I’m mostly just spacey and have piss poor memory… I don’t have any great knowledge of or communication with the other alters, and really extreme black out switches are pretty rare. Different alters still definitely come around at different times but it is often very subtle, I don’t always even realize there’s been a switch save for the strange feeling of having just arrived somewhere I’ve already been for hours. The other alters also don’t have a strong attachment to being seen as whole people or differentiated from me. Every alter refers to themselves as me, if that makes sense. Any names are mostly chosen for identification purposes rather than identity purposes. I also have plenty of periods of time where there aren’t any switches or overt symptoms. I do deal with a lot of dissociation (the spacey part), but even that waxes and wanes in intensity. No drastic outfit changes or makeup, no accents, no superpowers, no evil alters. About 96% of DID is covert, which means it’s under the radar, subtle, and would be difficult to identify in a person unless you knew them incredibly well AND you knew a ton about DID. I hope this gives some clarity, thanks for wanting to know! I’m happy to answer any additional questions you might have, too.
I feel like 97.6% of dark romance (maybe romance in general) would be better if authors put even the tiniest bit of effort into understanding human psychology so characters make choices that make sense for who they are and what they’ve been through.
There was very little reason involved in any of this book BUT I highly agree. Aside from the random placement of oil sconces, this was just the world as we know it? Stupid all around
absolutely kills me that so many of these dark romance stories could be decent with like, some effort and a good editor. really just the effort would push this one out of "basic shocking cash grab" into "enjoyable romp through an on fire dumpster." 😢 deconstructed Victorian asylum dystopia with dark romance and humanity given back to the characters? I would like to read that. This? This is not that.
