I share your very high regard for this actor. No matter the film, he never disappoints and a measure of his genius is that when he is on screen you can’t take your eyes off of him and when he’s absent from a scene you count the seconds until he’s back

As a very passionate and always eager connoisseur of all things film, I really don't think that I could give any numbered list of artists given by ten or even the twenty best throughout the last ten to twelve decades. But my number one would always be uncontested. Unquestionably, it may well be Charles Laughton for the 'next' ten to twelve centuries were I so blessed.
'Uncanny' isn't the right word; Watching him through ten different films, - all showing Mr. Laughton as ten altogether different people is an experience of 'awe', - I am never definitely not watching the same artist 'playing' ten different roles.
I am a fly on the wall, entirely unnoticed, watching the goings-on wherever I am, - secretly watching something very private.
Mr. Laughton's re-birth from one person and place some time later into an altogether different person, place, and thing is nothing short of truly phenomenal.
He does not act, or preform, play, or depict a character. Charles Laughton simply IS NOT some cast member reading a script - 'acting' a role. Truly an amazing man.

Charles is one of my favorite actors of any time. He was so bold and fearless and no matter the role his intelligence was so obvious. He magically became any personality and was so convincing. A complete joy to observe. I've never been interested in the stage but would have went just to witness his craft.❤🤌🏻👍🏻👍🏻

At ten years old I walked into our living room where my dad was watching Witness For The Prosecution and just a quick glance at Laughton pulling off the monocle test had me in awe. Last Laughton feature I've watched was Vessel Of Wrath with Elsa Lanchester. Very African Queenesque. You got to give it to performers who put the work in despite its overall quality and Laughton proved himself to be just that many a times over.

Great overview Nathan. I was introduced to the redoubtable Charles Laughton by my grandmother and mother who were both huge fans and considered him the greatest screen actor of their time. Like yourself, it is easy to get 'hooked' on Charles!! I have seen almost all of his films, and have many on DVD and old VHS(!!). Around 15-16 of his movies are available in full on YT. To get an idea of his amazing versatility all you need to do is watch the 8 movies he made in 1932 & 1933, culminating, of course, with 'The Private Life of Henry VIII' - the diversity is truly amazing. I can't think of any other major star who had so many memorable and unique characterizations in their first 12-18 months as a screen actor - from Nero in 'The Sign of the Cross'; Dr Moreau in 'Island of Lost Souls'; the River King in 'White Woman'; the submarine commander in "Devil and the Deep'

Thank you for bringing this absolutely superb actor more to my attention. I'll be using your review to further look into this very worthy actor. I know of his personal ... diversities ... somehow, and perhaps thankfully ... in this day and age such things are taken to be the salt and pepper but not the actual substance of the main dish ... a sentiment I would like to think Mr Laughton might appreciate?

Just one tiny correction if I may! ... "On Our Merry Way" is the title of the reissue of "A Miracle Can Happen." This featured three individual stories, the second of which starred Laughton as a bible-reading minister. However, the studio didn't care for it, so his segment was removed and replaced by a different story starring Dorothy Lamour. As it happens, "A Miracle Can Happen" had already been sent abroad for dubbing into Spanish with the title "Una Encuesta Llamada Milagro." It was under this title that it was issued on DVD with the original English soundtrack retained along with the dubbed Spanish one. If you google "Una Encuesta Llamada Milagro" and click 'images' you'll see Laughton's name in the DVD cast list. "On Our Merry Way" on the other hand doesn't show his name on the DVD cover as he wasn't in it!

I share your passion for this very singular actor , I can watch anything that he is in , all the films you have mentioned and I also love "Rembrandt " and "Les Miserables" , his performance as Javert is very understandable and clear as to why the man is , as he is , not a pantomime villain , but a flawed man . He knows how people tick and likes to show the audience . There is also a film with a title something like "They Knew What They Wanted" were Charles plays a hopeless Italian vineyard owner who tries to find a wife ,this too , is heartbreaking .He was the reason I became an actor many years ago and I worked with Simon Callow who wrote that great biography on Charles. Another actor I greatly admire is Robert Donat both of these men , though very different have great Humanity in their work..

Laughton was easily in the top 5 of the greatest actors that ever lived....lacking in physical gifts as you point it.. he had to do it ALL with pure talent....he is one of the very few actors that i will watch the movie just because he is in it... Bette Davis...James Cagney....among the other few.....
favorite roles....Witness for the Prosecution....this land is mine...The Hunchback of Notre Dame..The Big Clock...les miserables.. Mutiny on the Bounty...Rembrandt...and Sparticus..though i recommend Every film he has ever appeared in...plus i consider the one movie he directed....The Night of the Hunter....to be an absolute classic

Laughton was considered to be the greatest actor of all time but today self appointed "MOvie experts' on you tube that rarely watch black and white films don't even include him in their top ten or even top 50. This has nothing to do with his acting ability but more to do with their limited range of knowledge. The ability of Laughton to play such diverse characters as the Comedic Ruggles of Red Gap and the vilianous Captain Bligh with equal credibility makes his case that he is exceptional.
