  • This is a laser-cut model and after making a few changes to the original design, I wanted to see if this is flying better.
    Build Kits and Plans are available!
    nighthawkglide...
    This was flying very well this evening! I should have only adjusted one configuration at a time, but I got very eager to try several things.
    1) It has less dihedral on the main center wing joint. I was hoping to change the lift vector more upwards.
    2) The wing was moved back a 1/8th inch. It seemed a bit too loopy, so by moving the wing back I was hoping to have a straighter launch.
    3) I glued the vertical stabilizer to the side of the fuselage (instead of on the bottom of the fuselage.
    All in all, I think the results were promising! Which makes me happy! ;-)
    Brad and Bruce are brothers-- just having some fun building, sharing, and flying various things-- including experimental catapult balsa gliders to free background music because they are cheap! (but, the music is good... kudos to the music artists!)

    Very long flight times! I like it very much! Your gliders are very thin and easy weight. Perfect!

    Flies great! Seems to have a sightly high sink rate. Maybe built it a bit lighter, like 5 grams. Also i think you could go even a bit lower on the dihedral. That would also help improve the glide a bit. Nice model! I’m a fan. :)

    Flies nicely. Lighten it up a bit and use separate flaps and you could probably have a competitive design for Elastic Launched Glider.

    would suggest a little less dihedral to avoid what appears to be a little dutch roll in flight. but a beautiful little glider with a surprising performance. John Gray [New Zealand]

      Yeah. For this test, I built this glider with less dihedral than normal. I may even need to lessen it some more. We’ll see. 🤔. Thanks for commenting!

    • @NighthawkGliders
      @NighthawkGliders  5 років тому

      Well, technically, if wing is sanded thin enough, you can gently curve the trailing edge of the wings down to slow down its gliding speed and increase the wings lift performance. But, I think it’s mostly for looks! 😜

    Do you have any tips and/or links to videos for long flying indoor gliders?

    • @NighthawkGliders
      @NighthawkGliders  6 років тому +1

      Good question... especially if you are doing this for competition such as in Science Olympiad (for example.) I'd say some of the key obstacles to indoor flight is (1) Low ceiling height and obstacles, (2) Air conditioning/heating left on, and (3) hardwood/cement floors... So, you'll need to have a super-lightweight glider that has a reasonably large wing area that is close to the minimum weight required by your rules. You want to launch it as close to the ceiling as possible w/o hitting rafters, lights, basketball hoops, etc. Avoid air drafts because that can make your glider stall dramatically (and even crash!) Normally in competition, they turn them off, but when you are practicing, you may not get such luxury of turning these systems off. Hard floors can be a challenge-- especially if you are testing gliders and they are not trimmed yet... they can stall, flip, or roll and hit the ground hard and break. If you have a calm day, launch your gliders outside over grass to get them initially trimmed. When indoors, launch them gently and lightly and trim them as you progress to higher and higher altitude. The main keys to good flight time are high altitude on launch, successful and quick transition into a glide, and a good glide ratio. Always launch your glider with a starting roll and trim your rudder to continue its glide in the same direction. And I repeat-- avoid the obstacles... if it hits something, the flight is over! So, change your launch location and/or direction! And finally, build lots of gliders and practice, practice, practice! I hope that helps! Good luck!

    couple 30-31 second flights... NICE!
    has me wondering if the egg carton top idea cant be modded for band launching.
    its sure not that I don't love balsa, its the cheap+available+recycled things everyone has!

    • @NighthawkGliders
      @NighthawkGliders  6 років тому

      Thanks! Still holding on to your egg carton plan... for I have a few cartons stacked on my shelf. Someday, I hope to get around to tinkering around with that idea to see how it flies. 😊

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 років тому

      kept really light, for indoor tossing it'll surprise ya. thinking it'd need about a 3" spar (skewer slit to half round) to bridge the big dimple so it doesn't fold up with a band launch. a hook up front with thread and CA, moving the tail feathers forward a little for a bit of skewer to pull back... all easy enough to tinker with.
      recently watched a couple foam board chuck glider videos, it's generally too thick for small stuff but some of the foam board DLG (discus launch RC glider) were really impressive!

      I fly a almost a 12 inch Sandpiper :)
      I used some of the dimensions of your sandpiper but do not cut the sweepback on the leading edge , also I use a horizontal elevator , with the rudder in front glued to the stick !
      I do spend time when I build !
      I am so much a stickler for accuracy
      I have trouble getting much done !
      I posted on Hip Pocket aerodynamics earlier ! I flew in the park today and had one really good flite :) tnx fer reply :)
