Rocket League, another game with both a casual and competitive player base, starts you off with camera shake and one of the main controls (used to roll your car in the air) isn't even bound by default. SMG are not unique in this regard. However, I think Risk is different because you are at an inherent disadvantage due to the time constraints of your turn, made worse with the animations. With RL, you could theoretically learn to play with the default settings - you'd be at a disadvantage eventually, but would still be able to climb the early ranks. This leads me to my next point - the ranking system. I've played a lot of different games with Ranked modes - Rocket League, League of Legends, TFT, CSGO, Overwatch and I watch a lot of Pete's videos and do feel the quality can sometimes take a hit when you get people botting in the first few turns. The fact that a GM can match with a Novice in a *ranked* game is wild to me. That is unheard of in most games. If SMG were serious about a ranking system, the settings shouldn't be in one players control, it should either be a "meta" rotation or randomised, and they could use their battlelog data to create effective settings that are both fun and competitive (did someone completely stomp? Did the game stalemate? did people bot out early due to a bad spawn?). This would also reduce teaming/collaboration, since you could queue for a gamemode without the lobby and there's no guarantee they'll have both accounts in the same game. It should match people *of the same rank or similar*, and botting out early (or at all preferably) should result in either a time penalty to matchmaking, a penalty in ranking points, or both. Many competitive games have these systems in place, and for good reason. Pete also often talks about how the report system shouldn't be a thing, and while I do disagree with that idea, I think some of the above changes could also allow the report system to be refined and to actually have an impact (teaming and stalling for example are very real issues). Harassment? In a game with no chat? Why is that an option?
Perhaps the best way to guide future Risk development is to back a competitor. Risk is really just a trademark. The game mechanics are open for anyone to implement. Perhaps the community should start looking to develop an alternative.
The community has been. If SMG doesn't listen to its top players about very necessary design solutions I have no doubt that someone will come up with this before too long.

I have to agree with Pete on the real ranking ranking system issue. Also I would like to play some quick 1 on 1 from time to time but its just horrible with the almost entirely luck based system Risk has for that right now. It would be so much better to have a 2 game system where each player begins one game and the overall better player is the winner.
Would have looked pretty, but white was both guarding Pete from red and fighting red. Effectively every one of those white troops ended up being a Pete troop if you think about it.
The game remains popular in spite of the shitty development team (objectively shitty) because it is a brand name that can't really fail and the fundamentals of the game itself are great fun. The dice are broken, which makes it borderline unplayable. Many maps suck. The labeling sucks for players (e.g. "Expert" label given to players that are extremely weak which makes the term "Expert" confusing). Some games it is clear to me that players are collaborating based on certain decisions, which is frustrating whenever that happens. As a grandmaster ranked player myself (in previous seasons, the value reset so I'm starting fresh this season), there are no good player lobbies so it is always me versus mostly significantly weaker players (i.e. if I make a lobby for Masters and up, then it will never fill). Plenty of other issues. I should be able to toggle a mode when I simply right click to attack rather than click + Enter. It should automatically send all my attacks at the minimum troops sent for 100% balanced blitz victory rather than having to manually change it on attacks. The list goes on.
Gonna go with the unpopular opinion here and disagree. A lot of your issues aren't actual problems, or at the very least aren't symptoms of "objectively" shitty development. "The labeling sucks"- Pretty big non issue. If you know that "expert" signifies a player of a certain level, then it doesn't really matter what that word is. For new players, this is a purely cosmetic thing that triggers good feelings in their brain to keep them playing. It doesn't actually matter what the actual word is. "Many maps suck"- there is no mechanism in the game whereby you have to play any maps you don't like. "There are no good player lobbies"- I'm not sure what you want the developers to do about it? They can't be held responsible for people not playing their game. " I should be able to toggle a mode when I simply right click to attack rather than click + Enter."- bit of a niche thing. I can see how that might improve the game for some, but its absence does not = game issue. As for the dice thing, I do sort of agree. But I'm fundamentally against the idea of "balanced blitz" as a concept because it breaks the fabric of the game. Guaranteed rolls (at either 100% or 0%) is in many ways the antithesis of the game. The randomness of the dice rolls ARE frustrating, but Risk is a frustrating game. You say that the "fundamentals of the game itself are great fun", well losing ridiculous dice rolls have always been part of that. That being said, I do agree with you that IF the developers are going to implement a system like balanced blitz it should be, well, balanced (and the default being 100% to take rather than 100% of stack absolutely needs to be the default).
I disagree about newbies speed. All games start with nice graphics and it's up to player to turn off animations and other eye candies to prioritize competitive settings after they have learned the basics (if they want to). Agree about ranking. Currently rank doesn't mean anything in this game. There should be a separate match making with balance changes and custom lobbies should never impact any stats. Also a separate 1v1 match making could be fun.
Yes but those other game optimizations create very small advantages. In Risk noobs could lose the entire game because you were not fast enough. Risk is wayyyyyy more punishing to noobs compared to other games.

Hey Pete since you just posted I'll copy pasta my contribution to your show on the last fixed friday found here: ua-cam.com/video/9NABWn9maNQ/v-deo.html Hi Pete, gg. I'm the White player. For context on this game, I started out with territories on all 6 continents, totaling 2-4 sum armies in each. When this happens, I often wind up getting stuck with the "Itinerant Stack in Asia" strategy. Love that term. It also gives me a sort of pass to try and be a Chaos Monkey to see if I can run around playing the speed bag on donkey nuts to see how they react. Unfortunately it's often me that gets donkey (a$$) kicked as a result I realized that Red was the donkey player early (just a noob player, but irrational play still irrationally riles me up), when he zapped my 4 stack in Europe without giving me enough time to get them out of there. I figured if we corralled the donkey, (card blocked) he would be one of these players that refuses to go a round without getting a card, no matter how much it hurts him. If you spend more than about 3 armies to get a card, you are generally overpaying, especially when you get that overbought card at the expense of ruining an opponent's bonus, thus kicking off a war. I put my 60 stack on Greenland hoping that you (Purple) would close that last gate in the corral and put a sizeable stack in Afghanistan/Urals. Red Donkey being a donkey, I hoped he would demand to get his card no matter what and blast one of Blue's fat (but lower than our) stacks. Bonus if he gets the card at the expense of Africa. Then its grab the popcorn and smugly quote Petr Baelish's "chaos is a ladder." I felt ok speed bagging blue a little on this because he was too far away to really counter attack effectively. But, probably wisely, given that there is no guarantee where a donkey will kick, you didn't close the corral. Another great quote: "He's tried nothing and he's out of ideas." This was pretty much on the money. I had 4 opponents sitting on bonuses and was locked in an NA cage with a rabid bot. But..... if there's anything I can do to make a game interesting when I'm basically a board wraith I will just sit tight and see what develops. You have it right that I tried to convince green to get a stack out in asia so that I could take NA, and you very quickly countered that. Early in the game you mentioned you wanted to get that green stack in asia out of there before it got any bigger, and had green taken up my offer and gotten a stack out there, you probably would have felt the need to zap it at higher cost (Chaos Monkey!) And then the final quote while I was alive from the Grand Master schooling the stripling: "Lets just help red along here. Sorry White. You die. I think you die now." Lots of praise from you too, which I appreciate! I was a good player who made a bad play, and that bad play was expecting rationality from Red Donkey, who lost 46 armies taking a 60 stack without even the hope of a measly 5 cards as a reward. Me emoting a collaborating zombie bot is as close as I can get to a hee hawing donkey emote. Anyways stumbling on your videos got me interested in Risk again, which many people dismiss as being having about as much strategy as tic tac toe. This is not the case if at least one player plays irrationally, which almost always happens.
You constantly say people play "slow". But playing on mobile doesn't allow you to play fast. You can't just attackattackattackattack. There's a delay with all actions.
yeah but he's not "talking shit" about the players or whatever, it's just a meaningful observation in evaluating your opponents because speed matters. "Slow" players won't/can't do things that a fast player can. Mobile players are at a huge disadvantage, definitely
I think it would be fun if you could watch the replays without the fog so you could see what happened on the other side of the board
