I've got a bit of a love hate relationship with DM. On the one hand I love the guns; that reload really does feel magical, even if the trade-off is poor travel time at range. My biggest gripe with the ship is often it's survivability.
Trying to play with islands can be such a pain on maps with few good positions, and getting to them, as seen in this video, is often rather damaging. Especially since most BBs in the tier 8-10 range overmatch most of the ship. Even if you do reach the island you want, it's a death sentence if there's a CV present, wide DDs find you an easy torp target since you're unlikle to move much once there, and the dutch bombers can do a lot of damage also.
If you instead choose to open water, you have to contend with your lack of range and poor arcs at said range. On top of that if you're stern-in, that flat and overmatchable booty is a real cause for concern.
In the perfect match, Des Moines is beautiful. But I can also see ships like Alaska and Petro filling a similar role with greater ease and flexability.

A nice buff for the survivability of this ship would be giving it its historical 87mm deck, would put the survivability close to some soviet cruisers bow in at long ranges.
My favorite ship - Halsey, radar upgrade, and ultimate upgrade.
DM is always worth it. No gimmicks just a strong ship that rewards good players. Legendary mod is so good on it too.

Calling the most powerful cruiser in the game which has stupid fast reload, best radar, good hydro, improved AP pen angles gimmick free is...special.

DM is still great. It needs an AA buff but that's about it.
I also play it with range mod these days. I spam HE during the first part of the match, then when it gets safer to close in, AP is the go-to. In a duel with a Jean-Bart, DM wins the damage game. ;)
DM AP angles are 60-67.5° so youre pretty safe at 20°, but you shouldn't show more than that.
i like my meme DM build where you spec into the trait prolonging your consumables and getting the radar mod for coal. Radar is then lasting almost 1 minute. So fun when you can ruin a destroyers day with it :D
Italian BBs aren't old they're virtually brand new! Desmo's good but the CV rework wasn't kind to her (no fly zone to cv target) similarly 18" guns are now pretty wideapread....miss her prenerf accelearation
Why recommend range mod when 95% of the shots taken were inside the base range of 15k? Imo it only works to farm some braindead bb in the back, and generally speaking those have lower game impact.
Because it really sucks when you get a map where you're useless without it. Stuff like atlantic, mountain range if you didnt get a good spawn, etc. I still use reload but its not so clear cut

This is usually recommended for random battles solo. The dm can not tank like other cruisers and by no feat is it maneuverable. If a a dm runs into a bb within 15 km or less in open waters it should be dead within 2-3 salvos
I just got mine today. Seen a few vids from you, Flamu and Jingles. I hate fighting it in a BB or any other ship for that matter. Same equipment but chose other Commander skills like Last Stand

I've come to the conclusion that range mod is not ideal on DM due to the travel time of the shells, and those arcs. PQ, I strongly urge you to go main battery mod 3. It makes positioning even more critical, but it's so rewarding when done well.
When MM w/T8 I was able to bow in with the enemy BBS towards the end of the match. The damage I racked up quickly combined with turning the tide made everyone in chat say, “yo DM activated Dev mode.” The ship can be insane at times.
DM is one of the few ships I dread confronting. HE spammers are bad, Yamatos of the world of course. But the DM slings a ton is shells that overwhelm you with rate of fire and they hit HARD!
I just got the DM after 7 years of playing this game. I love it.
I gave up on the US cruiser line. With no torps ( yes, historically accurate) they are almost helpless in a knife fight. The DM itself doesn't get enough credit for itself its design. It was designed from wartime experience. Excellent compartmentation was its thing. It should be a very hard ship to sink. Instead it plays like a firecracker. One minute you are there and the next you're not. Right now the Pan-Asian cruisers are the hot ticket. Of course there is now also the tier 11 ships..... so much for tier 10 ships that can't take a hit.
Des Moines just got added to legends
ITA BB's wouldn't be good even if subs/CV's didn't exist. They were poorly designed
I switched to playing worcester the other day after playing dm and having a petro beach flat broadside to me and i couldnt cit him yet he destroyed me while i ran away at and extreme angle
so I'm a little late to the battle, so just got the des moines. I thought it came with radar . but mine did not. so can I put it on or what.
By now you know that the radar is one of your equipment slots, so yes.
I'll grind after I get Zao which I'll mostly kamikaze when I'm on low health

I imagine it'll take you a while to unlock since the Bureau is pretty crappy in Legends, but I'd be interested to see you take of the Legends Des Moines and how it interacts with our commander system.
Des Moines is such a beautiful ship, and it's taking all my willpower to not use my fxp to skip directly to it from Pensacola.
Operations for Pens and New Orleans is what I did. Played a lot of Ranked and Randoms with the Baltimore and Buffalo before finally achieving Des. Keep that free XP for resetting ship lines and buying them bk.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Pensacola when the turret traverse isn't annoying the shit out of me, it's just that I want DM that bad lol

Actually every US cruiser tier 6 to 10 even premiums have improved angles, super-heavy AP (SHS AP) from tier 8 to 10 cruisers (except Wichita and Anchorage) only improve penetration and damage while trading shell speed.
what tier 10 tech tree cruisers would you recommend? ive been thinking about getting the worchester for its AA.

DM will always be the safest cruiser pick for rankeds and CB's. U cant go wrong with her
They released it to legends and the CCs are loving it
Des Moines is a very squishy ship compared to most of its other heavy cruiser competitions. Its guns are unbelievably easy to get disabled. Everyone knows its weaknesses since it's also one of the most played cruisers in the game. However, its guns are good ESPECIALLY at close range it is devastating. BBs are very stupid to go broadside against DM in 10km and closer. Guns fire very quickly and long radar which makes it a nightmare for DDs ESPECIALLY within like 7km. DDs are dead at that range unless they have someone to bail them out or they happen to be facing the other way to escape and have a high speed DD... in other words very special and advantageous circumstances... otherwise they are as good as dead. Does good against other cruisers, except if they are disabling and breaking your guns which can be a BIG problem if they are good at it. Unbelievable good at just sitting behind islands and HE spamming BBs to death or cruisers which is where this ship absolutely SHINES!!
Overall its a very good ship, but it has some big issues especially when it comes to fighting other ships at close ranges in open water. BBs with 18 in. guns will absolutely delete you even bowe in and even 16 in guns will mess you up pretty bad. Other heavy cruisers with 8 inch guns or larger will also citadel you if you try to use your front AND back guns against them since by doing do you expose your cheek too much to get citadeled. The heal is also very limited since it doesn't heal much at all per use. All and all, this is not a very good open water ship, but it does moderately okay if you have no other choice, though it is recommended to keep at least aprox. 12km distance when open water gunning against most every except DDs and LCAs.
A real ship that is Very Good is a plus

A particular Clan Battle I had not long after I first got the DM springs to mind. Early on I sailed to the centre of the map, took some hits for maximum AR and then didn't stop shooting. Almost single-handedly crushed the enemy where they least expected a cruiser to be, broke their entire push and turned the game into a snowball win. No cruiser hits as fast and as hard as DM, particularly when that super-heavy AP is concerned.
Is that a mod UI from wows legends ? And where to find it
Des Memes has had her share of powercreep, but she is still, in my opinion, the strongest tier 10 cruiser (Petropavlovsk is a battleship, not a heavy cruiser). The magical 5.5 second reload she has allows her to be one of very few non Russian or Italian cruisers that can go toe to toe with 30mm overmatching bbs, granted you both are isolated and are at a decent range. Her HE DPM is always a threat, and the super heavy ap is every cruisers nightmare. Even if she lacks the penetration to citadel a battleship, i can consistently chunk most BBs for 5k+ by hitting their bows, sterns, and upper belts with AP.
Des Moines is an oldie, but a goodie, and i recommend every cruiser player to grind her out. Her legendary Mod is also hilarious and powerful, and encourages rapid peekaboo tacitics at close to medium range, which synergizes hilariously well with her radar and gun power.

Similarly Annapolis is definitely one of the most fun super ships IMO. On top of all the DM goodness you also get an improved armor structure that basically immunes getting citadelled from bow and stern, faster turret traverse and rudder, more HP, and EVEN MORE DPM.
what’s the difference between DM and salem?
Salem has a superheal and a shorter radar, can choose between hydro or radar rather than the usual def AA/hydro
salem has a super heal, and short range radar
Why does the range mod on PQ ship have a red star underneath it ? Is that a skill to be bought with coal ?
that red star indicates that there is a mountable Unique Upgrade/Legendary Mod in that slot.
How do you get the legendary option?

We just got the DM on console, i already got a +20% better dispersion build ready for it
I played this with reload. In key positons the reduced Firing detect is nice. When DD is pusing beside you.

Ive constantly been debating whether to remove the unique module and go for range mod on my DM.
this game is still about snipers and campers where momentum and pushing is punished. bigg issue of this game is grinding and that people who actually push are not rewarded. these is no actual juking or baiting
I had a 6 kill game yesterday on Salem. 181k damage. Such a fun ship (DM aswell).
The ship is op due to the buffs who have to it. It’s why the ship is still relevant to modern ships. It’s broken op, but still sort of op.
Having SUFFERED though the Buffalo, the Des Moines is certainly a worth prize in deed. 5.5 second reload on 203mm guns with IMPROVED pen angles, plus she has 30mm armor so she can Tanky MOST battleships (although increase in 419mm guns doesn't help her survivability.)
Actually Penscola to Des Monies plus any premium cruisers between 6 to 10 all have improved angles
