that's a nice technique, but I would say that you could use more body language and less whip. I taught my yearling to lunge without the use of the whip. I have only used a whip once so far in lunging and that was to teach her to go faster. Now I don't need it in order to get her to trot. I'm only about a week in on training her at all. I really like how encouraging she is to her horse as well. even if the horse doesn't understand words, she can sense the release in you when you say them.
How did you train her I’m trying to find some ways that would work better for her she’s kinda slow and lazy do I might need a little reinforcement but I’d like to use as least whip as I can
I really love the way that you show how it really is, it’s not always an easy and simple task and it’s very messy and not always perfect, especially during the things like training. This is such an informative and well put together video
Thank you so much!!!! My horse is gonna learn today! At first she spooked a lot but I still held on to the lunge line telling her that she can’t do that and I just got a whip today so we definitely will be trying! Thank you so much you’ve earned a subscriber! Edit: she’s got it down now!!! Thank you so much!!
I love this video! I love all your videos, really :) I adopted a wild yearling just over a month ago to save her from the slaughter pipeline, and have gotten her to a really great place with leading, backing, catching her, so I am ready to move onto ground work. I'm so glad you have such awesome, gentle yet firm techniques that I feel comfortable using, and speak to a horse's natural thought process. I can't get behind a lot of the harsher trainers, so I am very thankful to have access to your videos for help! I also used them with my 18 year old broodmare who was just started under saddle last year and they've helped tremendously. Thank you!
This is the first video I’ve watched on your channel and I just want to say I can tell you have such a kind heart and a great love for animals. I loved seeing your approach to this! Thank you
I love your videos Missy! Thank you for breaking it down so I can apply these techniques. I waited my whole life to own a horse and I bought a "well trained trail horse" in November. Turned out she has been in a pasture with her herd for 10 yrs with little handling. I am moving her in 5 days to a better location that has the proper training facilities since I am starting from scratch. (I'm not a trainer but I will do whatever it takes to learn). I found my own personal style is aligned with yours-I've tried to use DUH and it didn't feel right. It was like punishing her for not knowing what was expected. After 4 months my girl greets me at the gate and walks with me w/o a lead, follows me around and is so eager to learn. She looks a lot like Tillee (Belgian Cross) and the bond we have is magical. I am so excited to see what the future holds for us. I will be sticking with your techniques going forward. It was not easy to weed through the dozens of trainers (all of them are the best). When you recently mentioned in another video to follow your gut, I knew I was on the right path. Thank you again. -Denise & Pumpkin, Guelph, ON CAN.
Missy Wryn Thanks so much! I can’t wait to update you on her progress in the future. I can’t thank you enough for your videos! One quick question. I just bought a rope halter/lead & stick from Clinton Anderson and I love it. Then I saw your bitless bridle and of course wish I had purchased it instead. Could I use your detachable reins on the halter I bought? (I’m not returning it, it was a nightmare dealing with UPS).
Thank you for your latest message, so kind :) As for the reins I don't know how or where you can attach them to Clinton's halter since I don't believe it has side-pull loops; perhaps I'm misunderstanding the question?
Missy Wryn Thanks Missy! You understood my question :) It doesn’t have side-pull loops-only 4 knots over the muzzle. I will be investing in a bitless bridle ASAP. This horse is costing me a fortune😂
thank you for this video. my gelding is 18 and has done a lot of things with a lot of owners- but somehow missed out on lunging throughout his life. want to teach for those days when riding is not convenient, but still want to exercise him and spend time with him. this video demonstrated real horsemanship, loved it.
Very sweet 😌I just started lunging lessons with my new horse and the person that I am learning from is not nice like you to my pony she really hits him with the whip and hand to make him go round and get out of her space.I love your technique so sweet and nice
Love this! I love that you use a green horse instead of onw who already knows how to lunge! Very helpful! Also I just have to say I love the way your barn is set up💜💜
I have a new mare who was trained badly on lunging. She is very good at leaving me with a point, however she takes off in a full run..head looking everywhere...bucking half the time and then when told to stop or slow down she comes right in to me. I'm working on fixing that but the dead run thing has me stupmed a little
I have no real experience with horses other than riding them a few times. Based on watching UA-cam videos, I think you may have been able to get her to move to your left more easily with a flag extended more toward her rear quarter. (behind the drive line) She was mostly responding by backing up. as you moved forward into her.
Thank You so much for this!!! I'm 13 and training my mare and no one has taught me how to teach her how to lunge! But this helped so much!!!! She Gets it so well now! I also watched every other video and my mare has Improved so much!!! Thank you again!
This is a great way to teach lunging but it won’t work my my youngster as before I got him he was beaten with a lunge whip until he was forced to jump a 5 bar gate onto concrete to get away so now anytime he sees a lunge whip he will freak and run, no way of stopping him until you drop the whip. So tapping him on the shoulder would freak him out. We’ve tried lunging him before and he yanks away and stands in the corner of the arena shaking where he’s just so scared of what his old owners/breeders did to him 💔
I am currently training my horse to lunge and I stand right next to her shoulder and every time she tries to push me away from her I stand closer to her shoulder. The last few times I’ve done it she has given up and has gone the direction I have asked.
We just started, but I am doing everything wrong! She's so sweet, cute, affectionate; and I love her being in my space so we can snuggle. We will start with backing up this week and go from there. I have watched many of your videos and I absolutely love your methods. :)
hey i have a 2yr old mystang...shes been starved all her life and we rescued her...and she hasnt had much traning...im a begginer...and i was ask for some tips to make tranibg more easyier for her...have any tios?
I recommend watching my Training the Whole Horse video series ua-cam.com/video/wXJ-NSEkjqY/v-deo.html along with the Gentle Horse Training series ua-cam.com/video/Cd7kjTplm_c/v-deo.html. Best wishes on your equine journey :)
I recommend working with her in complete freedom in a fenced place ( roundpen etc.) and start using a leadrope and lunging when she comes to you and follows you when called without a rope.
hi, I loved your technique. I tried it today with my mare but it did not work. how long you think should one session be? she just did not get what I wanted from her and did not even react to the tapping on the shoulder.
Great video :) teaching my dog to lunge as I'm not the most athletic and planning to move soon where she cannot be off leash to run as she loves to just to get that extra exercise before/after a walk. I had to start by walking with her, eventually lengthening the lead as we circle and she's been getting the hang of it just by giving a small tug of the collar on the line and her command to come along or "go". Might switch to a head collar to see if it becomes easier than a flat neck collar because I have to keep tension on the line and I'm feeling more resistance than cooperation lol
Do you know what age I should start lunging my horse? Like at least having her circle around like in a round pen? I’ve been looking in the internet and haven’t seemed to find what age, because some say 5 some say 2. Can you help me?
I start horses under saddle no younger than the age of 3 and NO advanced training until 5 years of age. I prefer liberty training with horses under 3 years of age so they get the idea of following cues, but avoiding repetitive movements such as circling that could strain and damage young growing muscles, tissues and bones. Hope this helps.
Missy Wryn thank you! Do you know anything I should teach her at the moment? She is a year old and I haven’t been doing anything besides leading her. What else should I do?
I'm training a young percheron gelding and he's very slow and not too amped to move. He keeps following my feet. he's super focused on me and would match my footfalls etc but he would walk a step past me and then as I urge him on he thinks he has to come towards me. Help!
+Annaki van wyk I suggest watching my Training the Whole Horse video series where you can learn about herd leadership techniques ua-cam.com/play/PLUo7YCr3aoNQTZZVCRyfvVsP2LQLyDdsh.html. Well I’ll be a son of a.... 19 year old horse that has never been lunged. Followed this video exactly and had her lunging in about five minutes, even up to and including a brief canter. Now my wife has to eat her hat. Thank you
I recommend watching my Training the Whole Horse DVD series from the beginning which teaches you how to establish yourself as your horse's herd leader. Horse's are genetically wired to require a herd leader at all times, and until your horse recognizes you as its herd leader it will continue to be YOUR herd leader which is dangerous. You can watch the entire Training the Whole Horse series FREE ua-cam.com/video/2R_Gw7BQ5DI/v-deo.html.
The lunge line is actually a 12' lead rope that is attached by an eyelet - check out the All-In-One Bitless Bridle that is a training rope halter with the 12' lead rope and a bitless bridle with side-pull loops that you can snap on your reins and GO www.missywryn.com/All-In-One-Bitless-Bridle-WHHBCT.htm hope this helps :)
love the video but they do have sensitive skin and it may hurt them but she doesn't look like in any pain and she was moving appropriately and that area is absolutely gorgeous btw
Thank you so much! This has helped me so much, ive been trying to find a good technique to lunge my horse, he is 3 years old and has never been lunged, he is a Rockymountain gated horse. I will definetly watch more of your videos! :)

my horse doesn't respond to this unfortunately. I've tried another technique from another trainer online which seemed to work in getting him to move outwards and away from me, but has made it difficult to have him go further than a semi circle without stopping to face me and extend outwards on a long line.

I like the technique but maybe use more body language to turn her and a bit less wip. Well I would still use the wip but I wouldn't hit her with it but I would swing it as an encouragement of movement and not a smack.
I know I have watched your videos before and I really like your methods which is why I subscribed to you. I wanted to refresh on them so I could apply your training on my 3 year old QH. I am sad I can't
I love how you teach the horse with kindness and you're not impatient.
You should turn your body in the direction you want her to move, so she understands it easier.
that's a nice technique, but I would say that you could use more body language and less whip. I taught my yearling to lunge without the use of the whip. Thing with my horse is I desensitised him with the whip and he isn't scared of it at all even when I give him a little bit more pressure in the tap

Thank YOU
I like this technique I've been trying to learn this it seems like something my horse would actually do
This was really helpful I learned as if yesterday my 18 year old horse has absolutely no clue how to lunge
Thank you so much my horse can lung now and your so gentle I love you
I just saw that horses ears showed that he/she was afraid, just saying just a less bit wip,but i love it
bella Hawkway a horse should get used to a whip in general. She did just fine with the horse 🙂
The ears are a way of showing expressions so if they are bored or anyrhing like that they could have their ears back
Any horse is going to be a bit confused & afraid first time. I actually thought it was done very calm, i doubt ill do as well..
This is the best video on how to lunge, thank you 🙏🏼
I tried first time lunging today and then saw ur video this evening and tom I cant wait to implement ur techniques!!
I'm here looking how to train my 5 year old pinto pony. I always hated the idea of whipping her into my will thank you for posting this
My horse, when I tap him with the stick end of the whip, he kinda walks into it instead of away, and Gets in my space when it’s time for work
Such a gorgeous horse! ❤️ great video. This is really gonna help me!
Absolutely love this. I love it when you use green horses to teach us. Thanks...xo

awe poor guy - he is blessed to have you as his steward ❤
Start with a shorter distance from your hand to the nose. Get the nose to move without BUMPING it. Be patient. Other than that this is good work.
I am currently training my horse to lunge and I stand right next to her shoulder and every time she tries to push me away from her I stand closer to her shoulder. The last few times I’ve done it she has given up and has gone the direction I have asked.

I imagine the same principles could apply for a mini, right? We are leasing one who is very affectionate but very stubborn.
Yes these principles would apply to mini as well :)

Journey of The Horse it all depends on the way the horse was trained.
I. agree

I love this training technique
I trained my horse to lunge with just a lead rope and no round pen / Arena
thank you :) this was helpful! That horse is beautiful
+BeautyCanvas awe thank you :)
i love this. very helpful
Oh good, thank you for your taking the time to say so :) Missy
This is so wholesome and sweet, I love this training method❤️
Thank you😀
So useful thnx xxx
Hey, what breed is she? She's beautiful!!
If I remember correctly she's either a clyde/paint or shire/paint :)
She's neither, that is a palimino shire horse, paint horses have a white body with colored marks hence the name paint
Zuri, actually a paint is a paint because one or both of its parents were genetically paints. It is possible for it to exhibit no pattern at all. A PINTO has the white and colored body. So when Missy Wryn says "clyde/paint" she means one parent was clyde and the other a paint (thoroughbred, quarter horse, or paint in its bloodlines) or "shire/paint" she means one parent was shire and the other a (genetic) paint. Whatever she is she IS beautiful.
My horse doesn't lunge in a circle he does it in a squore
My horse lunges in a straight line
Um... There was no audio for me.
Whenever I lunge my horse she will luge for a few circles and then stop and look at me. What do I do?
+HeyItsPaxton Official at the point where you know she's going to stop (anticipate and usually you'll notice a certain spot that she likes to stop) up your pressure to keep her going - don't allow her to drop her energy. +Missy Wryn (Gentle Horse Trainer) than you
This happened to me, the reason why is she’ll stop when you look at her eyes. You have to look at her rump to keep her moving.
At least she teaches you not to abuse your horse.
my horse doesn't respond to this unfortunately. I've tried another technique from another trainer online which seemed to work in getting him to move outwards and away from me, but has made it difficult to have him go further than a semi circle without stopping to face me and extend outwards on a long line.

This makesso much sense. i am gonna try this on my horse. He doesn't know how to lunge on a line so hopefully this will help.
such a help thanks
I’m a big fan totally doing this with my coco (my horse)🐎
when she went to the left i got so happy oml XD
I was being taught to lunge incorrectly :/
I like the technique but maybe use more body language to turn her and a bit less wip. Well I would still use the wip but I wouldn't hit her with it but I would swing it as an encouragement of movement and not a smack.
Adilyn Rotole she DIDNT hit her horse with the whip, some horses don’t respond well to voice commands and a whip is needed sometime
that horse is gorgeous 😍 This video is great, I've been having a lot of trouble teaching my 13 y/o stb to lunge, will definitely try this method
