  • People don't often associate Japan with life on a sail boat but the country is rich with incredible places to explore via the great ocean. Daniel Springett and his family of 5 (plus a dog) have been traveling the world on their stunning 55ft James Warram designed Catamaran but for the last couple of years have called the Inland Sea of Japan home.

    Bryce, half of the charme of your videos is the professional but personal presentation you give. That's the reason, why "Living Big" stands out from the other tiny house channels on youtube.

      Bryce dude you and Kevin McCloud (Grand Designs) are the best presenters ever. Well done for you and your crew for such nice picture, presentation and speech in every way. I am sure when you come back to our beautiful NZ you could easily put your shows on tv (if you wanted to). I would love to see that. Kia ora bro!

    The way he talks about his future ...cruising around countries all over..such freedom. I understand the whole "easy life " that he talks about!

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  7 років тому +19

      Absolutely. I truly love the freedom that sailing life offers. The ability to pull up anchor and sail to wherever the winds will take you!

    • @NAMTRADEV

      That's the part that grabbed me. Passion for the future!

    • @johnlcallaway

      For someone cruising around, it's far from easy. Boat parts need constant maintenance, whether they are used or not. Hulls need constant cleaning and at least bi-yearly haul outs for anti-fouling treatments. It's impossible to schedule anything, weather dictates all movements.
      I'm not suggesting that it's not a great lifestyle, there are definite rewards. But one should be prepared for the extreme frustrations that occur and the large amount of work. It has been estimated that someone knowledgeable in many aspects of boat repair (i.e. carpentry, fiberglassing, diesel mechanics, plumbing, electrical) and can do most of their own work can live on a boat for about $12K(US) per year and my own experiences make me believe that's pretty accurate. Boats in sailing-ready conditions can be purchased for less than $50K (US), and boats that need a little care for as little as $10K(US). Our boat cost $10K, but we've had to put over $8K into her to make her seaworthy. And she's not a blue-water cruising boat, just a coastal cruiser for the eastern coast of the US. Could probably go to the Bahamas, but crossing the Atlantic would probably be un-wise for any but very seasoned sailors.

    • @ZelltisExx
      @ZelltisExx 6 років тому

      There is much maintenance, but it doesnt matter where you life, if its a house, a Camper or a boat you've to take care of your home. We lived partwise on our boat in netherlands, but sadly its not anymore.

    There's this certain warmth and moving feeling everytime this channel presents their material. Bryce and his team/partner really had me since that Brenda, Bret and the couple with a baby with a Permaculture Design garden outside. This channel really connects with its audience so differently that you just find yourself in the end thinking on what's really important in this life in relation to one's core beliefs. Thanks Bryce.

    The Wharram Islander 55 shown would be my ideal family liveaboard too - if the kids hadn't all grown up and flown the nest :D
    Wharrams have been described as the Landrovers of the sea due to their straightforward, rugged, low-maintenance design and construction, a 21 ft Wharram cat has circumnavigated the world.
    Daniel comes across as a chap who's found what's important in life and is supremely content. Props to you Bryce for making everyone feel like they're just having a chat with a mate rather than being interviewed.

    Another great video from you mate but would love to have heard stories from your guest about more challenging times living on a boat. One of my favourite videos of yours is when you tell us about what it was like to live for months in a tent and the small things that ended up making a big difference. Really great knowledge to share that can only come from living in a space through thick and thin. Anyway keep it up. I love your work mate. cheers

    Interesting deck pods. I think the Wharram design philosophy was to not have big above deck fixtures but the curved walls of the galley make it more feasible, and I guess being a 50 footer it can take it. Full respect for being a family man and still being out there living it in style.

    My sister and her husband live on their yacht, permanently moored in Hong Kong. It is absolutely stunning, have you thought of doing a video on that? It is truly amazing to wake up every morning and be on the water, they also have a sailing boat for when they want to venture out. They grew tired of living in small 5 floor condo's that were stacked on top of each other. Their yacht is gorgeous!! I never want to leave. They have built up hurricane and Tsunami walls around the area to protect them from severe weather. My sister's Husband is a pilot with Cathay Pacific and if you are interested I can give you their info. or I am sure you can find many other ppl doing the same in the area. Truly beautiful and away from the crowds of Hong Kong.

      That sounds amazing! What a cool place. I'd love to travel to Hong Kong and it sounds like an wonderful tour if I do make it there! At the moment we're traveling in the USA and it may be some time before I could head to Hong Kong. :)

      Living Big In A Tiny House I would not have blamed you one bit if you had!

    I actually think a layout plan would be beneficial for this, in the absence of not actually being physically present in the boat -- I don't think you get to appreciate it fully on the video taken, at least for people who are new/not used to yachts. It sounds like an awesome experience to do, but I imagine it gets a bit getting used to in bad weather/bumpy surf!!! An awesome find to do a video on for your channel :)

    I would LOVE to get a custom built Catamaran to live out of. But unlike a Tiny House where you can still have lots of property around it, a boat you only have as much walking space as the size of the boat, so I would have a huge $4 mil boat, which is way more than I can afford. But I would also have friends living on it, and maybe rent it out for events and stuff. IDK.

    So interesting, we are planning to sail to Japan! Is there a website or a blog of this family? Would have been great to hear a bit more about cruising in Japan :)

    If I show this to my husband, he's going to put our house on the market! lol
    210 Euro's? I wonder if it was in good shape when he bought it or was there a lot of cost involved with moving the kitchen, repairs, etc? Boats can be money pits sometimes.
    Seriously Bryce, you have the best channel and I look forward to each upload. :)

      Haha - but would that be such a bad thing? :) The boat was only a few years old when they bought it, so I don't think that much would have needed to be done to it. Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it!

      The narrow boats there are especially popular. I'd love to film some of those!

    U just have to make EVERYTHING waterproofed,which isnt so hard to do. Im sure everything has its place(like in a motorhome), u dont need things flying off the selves at any time. And, if u are sea bound,of course u need the high-tech navigational systems.I really like this boat,especially if 5 people are able to like on it full time.I cant imagine the freedom and things u would see?! Just got to be careful for pirates and wave and such.
