Using a drone camera for motovlogging - is it any good?

  • I decided i wanted a smaller more lightweight solution for a camera on a motorcycle helmet. Also could work as a helmet cam for protection footage. With hero 5 sessions being top dollar as they are becoming scarce and the gopro 11 mini being more maxi than mini I decided to look elsewhere.
    Drones.
This is a runcam orange 5. Plenty of product reviews ( drone based though ) on its features on youtube so I dont talk about that aspect but it has all the resolutions you could want and frame rates if compared with a hero 7. there are some gotchas if you are going to use it as a main vlog/helmet cam and I go through some of them in this video.
    Notes :
    - I only have a hero 7 black to compare to the newer ones are much better and will get you the ladies but are heavier and bulkier. The runcam is brand spanking new and the hero 7 was second hand.
    - Runcam orange 5 was on sale at the time I bought it.
    Settings. ( RC = Runcam orange 5 GP = gopro hero 7 )
    - Resolution 2.7k 4:3 ( both )
    - FPS : 50 fps ( both )
    - Stabilisation : Hypersmooth ( GP ) EIS - image stabilisation ( RC )
    - Audio : Not applicable externally recorded - Runcam doesnt have audio input for microphone at all and Gopro needs a microphone adapter for hero 5+. if you have one then the gopro wins that round.
    - Colour : Flat ( both )
    Post
    - Stabilised footage in premiere ( RC only )
    - Gopro reframe FX to reframe and iron out distortions ( both ).
    - colour grade ( both to sort of match I blew out the highlights on the gopro footage ) - If I were to be super pedantic I would say the Runcam seemed to have more range on the scopes.
    - Rendered at 2.7k
Thanks for reading all of this.

Bro it's 2023 most vloggers are using the Gopro 9 to vlog with and those with a little more money are using the Hero 10 or 11. The second option is the DJI. I can't see it making sense to use an older drone cam. Be safe out there 🙏

Reasons to use a drone camera : Weight , stealth , cost of replacement, Cost of entry and finally it ALWAYS works. For some $300 is a lot of coin to splash out for a beginner who might or might not be thinking this is the thing for them. I personally want the osmo action 3 but at a price the same as 4 inch extended forks for the front end... guess which one I am going to buy :). I'm doing the same with a 140 dollar old Canon first gen DSLR. Suck it and see.
