There are a lot of teachers who focus on at risk kids. They just don’t get a lot of attention from the public, and that’s fine. They don’t want to leverage those kids’ hardships for publicity and attention that would only make their kids’ lives more difficult.
I grew up in a rural area with mostly farms. Our high school had to put a special rule in place because too many students came in with hunting knives they forgot were in their back packs. Basically, if they remembered it at school they could turn it into the office to be held until after school without getting in trouble.
The "Written on a Train" insult? Well, it could mean two things. Either because a typical train isn't the best environment to write (you have noise, depending on the route and train type you may have vibrations, shaking, etc), OR as in it was hastily written, as if written during one's ride on a train (in high school one teacher warned "I don't want something that was written in five minutes on a bus, or even ten minutes on a train", quite a few students rode commuter trains, so that may explain it)
The only thing I remember from school was one kid got his iPad taken from him for some reason, I can’t remember what, but it was some sort of photo he had saved
I brought sugar gliders to senior HS, in a bonding pouch. However, bra bonding is a total thing. Also, for like all of 8th grade I wore jeans with HUGE pockets... Which is how I regularly brought my rat to school, where he slept all day and got snacks.
About writing on trains: That teacher probably just finish watching "Cold Comfort Farm" (good movie). Part of it is Flora Poste on the train to Cold Comfort Farm. She's trying to write a novel and crossing out most words so she can find a more lurid way to put it.
I once saw someone have a whole PC confiscated.

The train comment is because 50 shades was originally written as Twilight fanfiction by the author during her train rides to and from work.
